  • the main reason i got a white macbook is because i thought it was cool looking

  • One of the main reasons I got the Pro was for the optical drive (and speed and durability). I know Apple is pushing the no physical software thing but many third party developers haven't caught on to it yet. For example, I needed my OD to get Office on my MB. I think in a few years we won't need it, but for now it should stay. BTW, very nice video!

  • I do own the new MacBook Air. The lack of an optical drive? I could honestly care less. My Internet connection is pretty decent so it doesn't matter. Anyways, discs get scratched.

  • You make great videos--just had to throw that out there!!! Re: the Macbook Air and the lack of an optical drive--it's really the way of the future. Who uses CDs anymore, really? I haven't used a CD to download software or listen to music in.....gosh...I don't even remember. I recently had to decide between the new air or the new MBP and I chose the pro just because I felt like it was a more substantial machine and had better upgrade options as far as the ram and the hard drive were concerned.

  • No we need SuperDrives for many things

  • Simply retarded to remove the optical drive.

DVDs are to be had on the cheap and CDs are still worthwhile.

People may want things simpler, but they limit their options by having everything online, in the "Cloud", and it's just total BS for limiting what a user should be able to do immediately with a new computer.

Mac Mini 2011: Ripoff, locked, under-enabled, and over priced.

Look at the other options out there people, they blow the mini away!

  • I think the optical drive should stay where it is; variety is what makes the world great. Like valve's Steam... everywhere should make it so that once you buy physical media and register it through your account, it links forever to your account. Allowing you to download the program/game etc. even if you don't have the disc with you, but if you do have the disc you can avoid download times and go straight to the install. I prefer the route when you can choose based on your situation and location.

  • No superdrive is a mistake. Remember when they took away firewire, they had to bring it back. No 11" computer can replace the macbook, 11" is a netbook. Looks like apple just pushed all the college kids to pc's.

  • @southchatham 11" is only a netbook if the specs are of netbook value. The specs in the 11" Airs are extremely capable.

  • Watching this video reminded me of when I was a senior in high school and Apple had just put out what I believe was the second generation of iPods. A guy in one of my classes showed all of us his iPod and proclaimed that was where media was headed while someone argued with him that nothing could replace the interaction between human hands and a cd. I guess we know who won that argument.

  • @CoolEnufForaMac Hello there! First off, thank you for subscribing :) Second, I couldn't agree more! Just like every piece of media before it, the CD is on it's way out because change is the way things work in technology. We've just reached a point where physical media is no longer needed... so digital is the next step. But it's just like every other step before it :)

  • I like that apple did away with the optical drive, now I'm waiting for the same thing to happen to the macbook pros and iMacs. Then they definitely will be slimmer. Apple did the same thing with floppy discs when the iMac g3's came out. Also loving lion!! Great Video btw :)

  • @ChocolateThunda2012 Glad to hear you're loving Lion! And hey, thank you for subscribing :) Agreed though! This is exactly like what happened to the floppy disc and nowadays everyone laughs at the thought of a floppy. Someday, our children will laugh at the thought of a DVD! I'll be the first to buy a 15" optical drive-less MacBook Pro!

  • Great video!!!

  • Imho, forcing people to forget about the CD/DVD drive is a very bad thing. We still all have plenty of CDs and DVDs around that we use every day (you guessed that I'm in that case) and getting rid of the disc drive means that you have to backup all on a (pretty bid) hard drive.

What about backing data up on CD/DVDs ?

  • @LunaVorax MacMini 2011: Big Brother PC.

"What about backing data up on CD/DVDs ?" Yeah. True. Mac OS probably still comes with CD/DVD Burner too...

I wonder when they'll kill that? (If they haven't already)

This Is why I love Linux.- It does what I WANT, not what Apple THINKS is BEST for me.

Go download a Linux .ISO, burn it to CD, and live it up!

  • @8VMikeMaxtD I'm already a Linux-only user for 2years now, but thanks for the advice ;)

  • A guy at work will freak on me tomorrow. I told him to hold off on getting the white MacBook for his daughter because new stuff was coming. I know he won't want her to get an external optical drive. Oh well!

  • Not to happy about the whitebook going but obviously the purchase numbers weren't there to keep it going

  • You're intro is one of the best I've ever seen! Seriously - it's so simple, yet so effective!

  • Great video!

  • Great points you hit it right on! Great video

  • Getting my i5 mini in a week or two! Can't wait! I think either steve jobs had to much too drink at a business party or apple has truly lost grip of reality because no optical drive in a desktop is insane. Excuse my language lol but pc folk are be up my ass in tech shop because I have no DVD drive! I like the design though because it looks so much more sleek and well powerful. It is a small Mac pro basically because they are just different sized blocks of aluminum. And if this comment isn't lon

  • Did no one remember the little tagline to the macbook airs when they were released last year? "The future of macbooks" or something like that. And now the macbook is gone.... So.... No body caught the hint? lol. Nice vid Cait, as usual. (It's applefanboynz btw, this is just my youtube account)

  • Nice video! I have a macbook, and it is a shame to see them go, but I can see why it's being done. did they change the design of the mac mini, e.g make it smaller?

  • Awesome recap!

  • Great video. You made a lot of good points about Apple's decisions. I've never purchased any Apple products but after watching your videos I have become very interested in Apple products.

  • I was a little sad to not get a box for Lion because I wanted to add it to my Apple Box Shrine :P

  • @jdivina15 I see what you mean. I'm just saying that I don't think Apple wants to do anything drastic.

  • Apple is moving forward and i'm more than happy to move forward with them.Optical drive is something i really don't use so i won't miss the loud sound it makes when the computer is searching for it.Great vid btw.

  • @ProspectNY11211 Thank you! Glad to see you in the comments by the way :) I agree though! Can't wait for a MacBook Pro that doesn't make optical drive and hard drive spinning sounds. The MacBook Air must be silent!

  • Nice video! You do blink often. lol. I hope to get the Mac Mini. But I think I'll go for a MacBook Pro over a MacBook Air for my programming and web development.

  • @EnvXOwner Thanks! And I didn't even notice my blinking haha. Good luck with the Mini! What specs are you getting?

  • @ForeverG5 I'm thinking about getting the lower end model. Then I'll upgrade the RAM and get an external SSD drive which hopefully I can use as the boot drive.

  • @EnvXOwner Good idea! The Minis are pretty slick looking now. I'm sure you'll love it!

  • Great Video Caitlin!

  • @techmetta Thanks, bud! :)

  • i wish apple would just kill off the cd drive in all macs especially the imac and macbook pro and just give us free external cd drives

  • @jdivina15 I don't see them giving us external drives for free but I could see them lowering the price as time goes on and this becomes a standard.

  • @ForeverG5 i was actually saying that apple should just kill the cd drives right now and while cd's are still standard, apple should make external cd drives free but yeah i can see it not being free but the price would be lowered in the future

  • Comment removed

  • Very nice! :)

  • @TheFrancois1 Thank you :)

  • Great video Caitlin. I definitely agree with many things in the video, especially your perspective on the optical drive. Keep up the great work!

  • @FullCircleReviews Thank you, friend! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and agree :)

  • I agree with you! switch my optical drive for an SSD and I will be happy for ever! I only ever made CD's for my girlfriends car (shes a music noob.. I give it all to her) but that happens like never anymore.. I kind of wish my MBP didn't have it just to maybe have more space for other stuff more important... I really like the MBA and I think the macbook was just kind of "just there" and didn't have a purpose anymore.. yes it was less than a MBP but then there's the air, (which now is better)

  • @AndresR0d Glad you agree! Yeah, I haven't made a CD in years. I just plug in my iPod when I'm in the car. I'd love to see a MBP without an optical drive. The form factor would be beautiful.

  • @ForeverG5 yeah, ligher and I would love to see how apple would make up for that space! Imagine if they were to start adding SSD's as standard and make it ligher and thiner! I can only hope..hahah

  • Hey this is my new account haha, it's Kira.

I'm kinda on both sides about getting rid of the optical drive. Because on one hand I do like the convenience of getting everything in the app store like you said. But on the other hand I have like a need to have a physical copy. But honestly I think it will grow on me because I had the same problem when I got my Nook. It was weird from going to pick up books and having a shelf full to having all my books on this little tablet. Just something different

  • @FiveForApple Hey Kira! Exactly! I was anti-eBooks for a very long time. Then, when I got my Kindle, I realized the power of digital content. I can buy any book from the comfort of my couch. It's definitely the future :)

  • Received my MBA top spec 13' in the mail today!!! I love it and the external superdrive is only £66 in Scotland so pretty cheap:)

  • @kev2427 Did you get the 1.8GHz i7?!

  • @ForeverG5 Yep, the 1.8GHz Dual-Core i7........superdrive........total cost = £1,515.00:D

  • @kev2427 That's awesome! Be sure to let me know how it performs with that heightened processor

  • @ForeverG5 I will. I'm thinking of making my first videos of me doing speed tests etc and some gaming too!. I am very camera shy though:)). I also have another whacky test I want to do. droping the MBA from my bedroom window(with an otterbox case) to see if it holds up:)

  • @kev2427 Well be careful with that test, although it would make an interesting video ;) But you definitely should make videos! Don't be shy! Everyone is nervous at first but you get used to it! I'd definitely be watching if you made some MacBook Air videos

  • @ForeverG5 Well, In your most recent "voice" video you do a pretty good Scottish accent:)

  • I think once large solid state drives become cheap I will say a nice big goodbye to optical media forever. It's bulky and very dated. I only burn cd's now and even then I hardly do that as my BMW and my van and my Peugeot all have iPod in...Can't even remember when I last used a CD in the car :L

  • @WillThePlank Exactly! Glad you agree! Plus, physical media is very fragile! No moving parts FTW ;)

  • Great video! I'm upset that the White Macbook's gone, like you said, that also was my first mac, and the optical drive, I don't see much use to it, unless burning CD's but really Wit the Mac App Store, there's no need.

  • @ThatTechShow Glad you agree! The white MacBook was actually my second Mac but I had it throughout all of high school so it was a special one.

  • The new Mac Mini is more powerful than my iMac, this slightly angers me lol

  • @nick12882 I know! The 11" Air is faster than my 2.53GHz MacBook Pro!

  • the only thing i use the optical drive in my MBP for is making CDs.. and i wouldn't have to do that if my car radio had an auxiliary jack, so no optical drive is a non issue for me. I downloaded Lion last night and installed this morning, and i'm impressed, but i wish there was more info as to ALL the features.. i'm still learning! great video Caitlin! keep up the great work.

  • @Clintonde Thank you so much! Happy to see you in the comments! :) But yes, I agree! I only make audio CD's anymore. I never burn DVDs. And audio CD's rarely happen because I can attach my iPod to my car now. Like I said, it's not just Apple. Optical drives will eventually be out of cars too.

  • @Clintonde Same scenario here. I would be willing to compromise my MBP's optical drive for it to be smaller but if Apple were to put a quad-core i5/i7 in a notebook with the MBA's design, the battery would get annihilated. Once they can optimize battery life (which is inevitable), then they'll remove it. Also, since all of the MBPs in the lineup now have either 500GB/750GB hard drives, the cost of SSDs are going to have to decrease as well before Apple completely revamps the MBPs.

  • Great stuff Caitlin im sad too to see the macbook go :(

  • @TheTechMundo It has sentimental value, definitely!

  • Sorry I love the Macbook Air, I just don't think it's breadwinner. And I think iPad will take over and swap into the Macbook Air price-points.

  • @GrandviewApp I am very curious to see if the tablet industry takes over the laptop industry eventually! It's a definite possibility. I don't think the MacBook Air is for everyone but I think it fits nicely as a baseline Mac laptop.

  • Die Optical Drive Die!!!!

I don't believe in Macbook Airs! I don't get it! Everyone I know has WANTED to buy one, but then has to choose against it because it's either:

    1. too expensive for what it's doing compared to IPAD 2 (this is big)

    2. not a strong enough laptop for someone who uses computers after leaving college.

If iPad HD drops, my opinion is Macbook Air is going to look very very weak.

  • well i have the mid 2010 17 inch macbook pro with a core i5. im not really surprise how they have discontinued the macbooks cause i knew that a lot of people wasn't really buying it to tell you the truth i was planing to get a macbook before i knew about macs i change my mind i then thought of getting the 13 inch or the 15 inch but i set my site on the 17 inch and thats what i got i want it a mac with big power

  • @lorenzo6320 Yeah most people that looked at the 13" white MacBook decided to just jump to the 13" Pro for extra power.

  • @ForeverG5 exactly. how did you get lion you bought it at the app store?

  • I'm willing to bet Apple will axe the optical drive from the MacBook Pros next and essentially make 15" and 17" MacBook Airs that are titled Pros. They just need to figure out how to optimize a quad-core processor to work with a really efficient battery in such a small notebook body. Anyways, nice video!

  • @xRadicalAurax Agreed on the battery issue! But I am expecting the same with 15" and 17" MacBook Pro's that look like Air's. I would buy a 15" Air style MacBook Pro in a heartbeat. Thanks though! Glad you enjoyed and happy you watched :)

  • Caitlin very well said. I agree 100% with everything you've said. :-) Great job!!!!!

  • @iMactheIphone Thanks Fabian! I'm glad you see the light. Apple knows what they are doing :)

  • Great Video :)

  • @techdude462 Thank you! :)

  • Don't forget about the Apple Thunderbolt Display! Nice video Caitlin!

  • @Wako098 I know I didn't mention the Thunderbolt display but that really had nothing to do with Apple killing the optical drive which is what this video is mostly about. :) Thanks for watching though and I'm glad you enjoyed.

  • @ForeverG5 Oh, ok. Can't wait for your first impressions video about Lion!!

  • What are you getting?

  • @Ch3rycoke I would love to get an i7 MacBook Air but we shall see what happens.
