I know this is the point where I'm supposed to rave about Te Kanawa, but everyone else is doing such a marvelous job of that... Instead, I'd like to say that Ms. Bonney is absolutely stupendous here, as well.
Te Kanawa always floors me as the Marschallin. I have this DVD...at the end of Act 1, one single tear runs down her cheek...she lives this part. Destroys me...it will be hard to find someone to match her in this part.
I think, Dame Kiri is the only Marchallin that really loves Octavian, the other ones are more concerned about getting old. I just would love to see Dame Kiri singing it with Brigitte Fassbaender or Sena Jurinac as Octavian.
I do not generally like opera, however this is one of my favorite pieces, and I feel the singers do a wonderful job with the emotion and music of the piece.
I agree with LizN90, I see no deficiency in Kiri's interpretation. It's all there in her eyes, you just have to look. Lots of people say she can't act, but I disagree. Plus which, there's so much beauty and emotion in her voice, who cares?
@bolideeva I quite agree - there's a stillness about her which is most bewitching. She allows her emotions and thoughts to just roll out through her voice; you can see it in her eyes, too, and every part of her body language. She's not ensuring the message comes accross, she's just being. So very beautiful and truly moving.

To think that Anne Howells jumped in with very little notice to save this broadcast. You would have never known by just watching this.

What is this lack of "depth of interpretation" stuff everyone says about Dame Kiri? I don't get it. Why do people say that? I think she is fabulous.

Sharing with Kiri's another great show as Marschallin at MET 1982!

Marshallin is one of Kiri's favorite roles. It shows in her wornderful interpretation and execution.

Gorgeous- no one sings the Marshallin like Te Kanawa-glamour and looks and voice makes up for a little deficiency in depth of interpretation.!!!
