@910dudeman I watched all the advertisements this year to count how many companies (local and national) said "Merry Christmas". Not Season's Greetings or Happy Holidays.......Merry Christmas.

Out of the dozens of ads I saw on TV only one company said Merry Christmas. And I never saw that commercial a second time.

I don't get it this 4 wall stuff. Can somebody explain me? I mean i understand the character look out from the scene. But why 4 wall? What about the first and the second and the third???

Lets say that the TV screen is a box, theres the screen which we see, the two sides and walls 1 & 2.

The 3rd Wall is the background and the 4th is the wall that we look through. Characters are never supposed to talk to, look at or even signal towards the 4th Wall.

If it is acknowledged by the characters, the effect of the show being 'real' is ended. This gives the effect of breaking the barrier between the show and the audience, which is shown by the screen.

@BrutalBlood TV characters usually aren't meant to look out through the screen and at the viewer. When they do, it breaks the barrier that separates the show from the viewer.

Here, David Tennant looks directly into the camera and out at the viewer. He looks right at you and talks to you. He's done this on other occasions. He even looks into the camera in "The Family of Blood."

It usually ruins the effect of the show, but in this case it's more personal and includes the audience into the show.
