She is not deaf. He thinks she is so they spend all the time speaking sign language, she also thinks he is deaf. But she doesn't want to be with someone who is deaf. Near the end he tells her he loves her thinking she can't hear him. But signs to her that he is going to help her get a job in his family's restaurant. His family tries speaking sign language to her and she speaks to them. They are all surprised and the two end up together.
