I think Gene Kelly would be blown away by all the comments here. You don't see dancer's like this anymore. Nobody could top this man and that smile! Sigh.
Men can be sexy, hot. But a man who is beautiful is beyond all that partly because it embodies more then appearencies. And INDEED Gene Kelly was a BEAUTIFUL man! GENE KELLY- makes women all over the world melt by just smiling. Who wouldn't agree with that.
@RememberRox Oh, I completely agree! Well put, RememberRox, well put! Talented, charming, and absolutely beautiful! He makes me melt every time he smiles. SWOON!
He's my favourite - men aren't made like him anymore - at least not in Hollywood anyway, gorgeous and with a beautiful smile. Watching him dance makes me smile!
Wonderful Gene Kelly....now that was a talented man...dance, sing, act, direct, producer...you can't find a man who looks like that nowadays....I am so sad that he is gone, but he lives on through his work. How handsome he was in this clip and in his films. He dances like poetry in motion as they say...What a perfect face and dancer's body. How utterly handsome and that smile! thanks for posting this.
I wish they would revive this show. Can you imagine how fun it would be to see contemporary movie stars on a program like this? George Clooney would be fantastic, the way he can mimic voices.
He is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOT!! I luv him so much....I grew up watching him and LOVE HIM so much! Whenever people start talking about him I get so excited and *sigh* ugh.....he's just tooooooo dreamy!
I'll take it one step further...I was so in love with him, I even took Brigid as my confirmation name in '69 -- I believe his wife's name was Brigid. What a wonderful man -- We do not have the class these days of those men, Kelly, John Daly, Peck,, Heston... ah well, we still have Robert Duvall and Ramblin' Jack Elliott... sing it Jack...."I'm singin' in the rain....." think I'll put on Brigadoon today and pretend I'm Cyd ...
Probably a father thing since I never had 1, but oh my gosh, I was so 'in love' with this wonderful man, remember feeling crushed in '96 when he died, just adored him, still do.... oh to be in Brigadoon with Gene....
Back in those days, movie stars and other celebrities appeared in New York in advance of a movie, book, etc. that they wanted to plug, as most of the networks were still located there. They would appear on whatever show they could. The panel knew who was in town for this, and they would focus their questioning on that.
@keithjas he makes me melt!! seriously, i think one of the very few celeb men who i don't care what age he was, he was GORGEOUS!! hellooo at 40 he looked 25!!! mmhm ;)
Gene Kelly always seemed like your best friend, who'd have you to a barbeque, or to watch the game. he would even coach your kids little league team, but just happened to be the best dancer you'd ever seen.
I love the old what's my line, so thanks for posting.
I hate that so many of these mystery guests are in NYC promoting something and the panel knows everyone that comes and goes into the city. They should have had more local stars and guests that were just in town for the hell of it.
Hey, Jones Beach-right down the happy road from me. He was probably at the old Jones Theater which has been renovated a lot since but history filled. That must have been a cool show with Mr Kelly.
The failures of great men, in this case, great actor/director/dancer Gene Kelly, tend to be more interesting than the successes of lesser people. In his case, I am thinking of "Invitation to the Dance," which MGM finally released the same year as this appearance.
Would Bush's or even Obama's press secretary ever appear on a game show?
I've noticed that many WML mystery guests turn up the same year as guest panelists. I wonder if Gil Fates had some sort of double contract offer for them.
Bush's press secretary, Dana Perino, appeared on NPR's "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" in December 2007 and caused a minor stir by admitting she hadn't known about the Cuban Missile Crisis when asked about it by the press. There's a clip here on Youtube, from October 2007, showing her faking her way through the answer.
I saw "Invitation to the Dance" in a theater about 30 years ago in New York. I know it did not do particularly well, but I liked it and would gladly sit through it again.
Got to hunt down the Dana Perino NPR clip. The Cuban Missile Crisis did a good job of scaring me at the time (age 10 then).
I think that Gene's "failures" weren't really failures at all. He may have been in a few bad movies, but did he ever give a lousy half-hearted performance? No. It took a lot of guts, determination, and creativity to make "Invitation to the Dance," and I'm thankful he did it.
it such a shame that he is very well known and the people thats blinded got him. :(
