Frankly, Senator Hatch, I don't know why you're so doggone stupid to think that the jobs created in this country were by huge multinational, outsourcing corporations whom you vehemently defend as if it is your own life.
Why, Mr. Hatch, are YOU so doggone stupid?
(I don't mean to sound like a Democrat here. Both parties suck since they refuse to stand up to the greedy financial institutions that are truly responsible for screwing working Americans.)
The richest 5% that the republicans are fighting for didn't get rich by creating jobs. They got rich by destroying jobs- consolidating, outsourcing, mergers and acquisitions. I don't know why Senator Hatch is so doggone stupid.
I don't care for handouts. A lot of birthers, teabag partiers, 9/12 American activists or whatever Glenn Buck is pushing, need to look at their own relatives and ancestors before taking to a street corner with a sign. I've known some obese bearded hill folk from Arkansas who used to get divorced and remarried about every 5 or 6 months to fool the DHS case worker that would come to their family's homestead to investigate. So they of course could remain indoors, yelling at the kids and doing meth.
So you christnazis really don't think for yourselves at all then eh? I can't wait till the next conservative cunt makes it into office really. I always wanted to live in the mountainous terrains of America while the leaders of the christ based regime patrol our streets with not only Marines but dumb rednecks with rifles too. YAY militiatards!!!!
Christianity and neoconservativism are a cancer that eat away at progress. You sure as shit can have 10 hispanics cutting Glenn Becks lawn but no we can't have them being healthy enough to actually show up to work with actual health insurance. You hypochristnazis really repulse me with your corporate cocksucking.
Well then let's exhume the corpses of Jerry Falwell and Anal Roberts to round up all the sinners and put em in camps. So old out of touch morons like Orrin Hatch can have something to hunt for sport while wearing his magical mormon undies.
Demcrats want to turn the country into another godless USSR. Let all the illegals come in and get free health care. Let ACORN stuff the ballot box. Increase debt and devalue the currency.
Umm I believe Mark Sanford was concerned with his crotch when he was fucking a woman in South America and left his position of political power for two weeks in North Carolina... Yea the GOP is totally unconcerned with their crotches and all about security.
Must be why Prop 8 went over so well. The GOP is only concerned with other peoples crotches and bellys and not their own slave owner stylized physiques and closeted homosexual feelings because god is dead and they just don't know it yet.
I don't see why Republicans are so doggone cynical, they seemingly since Obama won the election would rather see America crash and burn so they can regain the majority and resume business as usual...ie corporations over everyone else.
Democrats could even introduce an amendment to allow raped women to have their day in a court of law, and Republicans would STILL vote against it.
Given half the chance I would assume the neo con-men would hunt humans for sport. Their desire to destroy sin becomes a desire to eliminate sinners through detainment or downright destruction because in their "morally righteous" minds they know they can't legislate the lives of the people they claim to try and reach. Hypocrites and murderers the whole lot of them.
Their christbased nazi following also should be expunged. You supposed leaders have the ability for progress.
Just like an Ameritard neo con nazi. No base to stand on and goes to personal debasement within minutes of spewing his obviously uneducated rhetoric because he can't handle not having his "shout mob" to back him up.
hmm, coming from someone whose brains are a heaping, steaming, pile of curled-up horse shit... that's a compliment. thanks bra.
i mean seriously, it's not like you have a single working brain cell or a single strong argument or even single moronic argument to make, right?
but wait, do you know you're a moron that's to dumb to have a discussion? does it piss you off when people talk and your head starts hurting? or do you think that what you say matters or something?
@jasonsadventure So that's pretty much all you can say is debasement of my mental status when so far the only thing I've heard are references to fecal matter coming from a horse? Hmmm. Nope that totally doesn't sound like some fat retard redneck masturbating to every word Limbaugh says.
@jasonsadventure Oh shit man... I'm sorry I thought you were talking to me. That's usually what that @name thing is for, but hey we all make mistakes, and I made a mistake in coming at you like a knife wielding young republican intern BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Anyways, seriously why do people still listen to someone who is obviously so out of touch with the realities of America? If there's flattened wages and increased sales prices then how do we make money to consume?
the really sad thing is that republicans think they are smart and relevant. tell me, when has reducing taxes created jobs, cleal? did that happen during the new deal? lbj's 'great society'? reagan INCREASING taxes during the 80's? know your history and know your facts, knuckledragger.
A man in Utah calling a large group of people stupid? I sure do wish there was ever some relevancy to why we keep Utah in the nation as a state. Neo-con religious nuts should be expunged into space and shot with a missle. No wonder they're called the "No progress party"
I, in torn, wonder why people like you like to see yourself as tolerant, when you--as you just stated yourself--want to kill political dissidents....
BTW. you are the only one calling anything 'The No-progress Party.' The inescapable truth is that capitalism is the only system to have ever brought prosperity and economic and social progress to the world, and that republicans are the prime advocates for capitalism - not you socialists.
We need more government jobs because people want the easy way. No accountability with bunches of benefits. Not productive? No problem just count the days till payday. Can't provide something? That's o.k. the government will pay you. No need to worry about the consumer because we don't need to make a profit. We just take what we want.
This, from a person who believes the "holy underwear" he is required to wear will protect him from bullets, knives, assaults.....and will assure him a place in a heaven reserved only for him and his fellow fancy garment wearers.
Hatch, should remember that the biggest employer in Utah is the Federal Govt. FDR's New Deal did bring prosperity for decades he should have spent more earlier. WWII increased government spending and created infrastructure. His dogma was tried for 12 years, the rich got richer the poor poorer and jobs were not created. IF things where turning around faster they would claim Bush was responsible. I submit Bush is responsible for this deep recession, remember it started 2 years ago. Voodoo econ 101
The TRAGIC (toxic) dumbing down of the modern conservative movement: Buckley Goldwater (rolling over in their graves) Nixon's Southern Strategy Reagan (talk & massive DEBT) Religious right hijacks Jesus. GOP hijacks the flag. Limbaugh & Hate Radio Fox "News" Bush/Cheney Palin Birthers Beck The ABYSS (?) - Mainstream conservatives, you are HERE.
I also voted for Obama but he's broken every campaign promise just like Bush. They are both deceitful. Say one thing and do another. Lie at any cost. Screw the people. The bottom line is that our elected representative no longer represent us aka "We, the people..."
There's no difference whatsoever. Bush started bailouts, Obama continues them. Bush invades Iraq, Obama escalates war in Afghanistan and the list goes on and on. It's like bad cop, good cop. What you probablly may not know is that both parties are funded by the same special interest groups. It doesn't matter who gets in. The same old, same old continures. What we need is an informed electorate, strong 3rd party candidates, vote all incumbents out of office and turn off the printing presses
What promises? He promised the stimulus and it was passed. He promised health care and he is trying to get it passed. Did you want him to close GB and repeal don't ask/tell right away? That would have wasted his political capital right away because they are politically divisive issues. He doesn't need PC for those things anyway. He does however need his PC for stimulus and healthcare.
Obama, like Bush, has seen his popularity plummet. Like it or not, the fact are the facts. People are not happy about their so called representatives lying to them. They will say anything to get elected and then do as the party, bankers, insiders, etc., tell them to do.
If you are implying that the stimulus bill he passed did infact help the economy then you are still in Obama mania mode. Wake up, he's hurting us more than helping.
The stimulus isn't working, only prolonging the inevitable. Also, Medicare and Medicaid will account for 80% of all government budget increases between now and 2037. Both of these programs are under-funded and performing in the red, which should lead most Americans to believe that the implementation of another government lead entitlement program would be economic suicide.
The stimulus actually is working. I don't get it, you guys thought it would be passed and in a year things would be back to normal? How about some historical perspective. It took WW2 to get us out of the GD. Getting the economy moving is a lot tougher than messing it up. Most economists project that if we had not passed the stimulus unemployment would be upwards of 11%, and GDP is higher by 1-3% than it would have been. Not to mention it is on pace to reach its goal of jobs saved/created.
One of the intentions of the stimulus was to keep unemplyment at or below 8%, as Obama assured us it would. How can the job creation objective be on pace, when unemployment is 2 points higher than promised?
And, if you listen to "most economists", they are the same group of ass-clowns who claimed that our financial system was sound, all the way up to America's economic collapse. You still trust them?
And you're right. It was WWII, not the New Deal that helped America emerge from the GD.
First off, parts of the New Deal worked, but it just wasn't enough. There were plenty of economists who predicted this economic downfall. Obama didn't promise that at all. Most of the jobs have obviously been saved rather than created. However, there are companies that are hiring directly because of the stimulus money. Such as the companies who attended Eric Cantor's most recent jobs fair. Hmmmm let me think, who is more trustworthy, "drunkenpublicness" or professional economists?
First off, the stock market crash of 1920 and insuing depression lasted 18 months because government allowed the market to correct itself. The GD lasted how long? And you're suggesting that The New Deal had some elements of success? Name them. The US had to enter WWII in order to finally put people back to work again.
There were very few (almost none) economists who predicted the meltdown several years before it happened. They were laughed at by the economists we see every day on cable news.
I meant moderate success. There were programs that had slight impacts on things like unemployment and inflation. Hoover did nothing different after the 29 crash, and the Depression was worse by 32. Bush continued the same policies and the economy got worse. In 32, there was almost a 25% unemployment rate, in 1940, the rate was down to about 14%. Once we entered WW2 the numbers obviously dropped incredibly. But in those first 8 years, pre WW2, there was a massive drop the UR.
Despite any success, there is no evidence to suggest that the New Deal helped put an end to the GD. On the other hand, it only took the market 18 months to right itself in the wake of the 1920 crash and it happened without any "Deal".
The GD was caused by the same market forces that caused the housing collapse. It has little, if anything to do with Wall Street greed, as so many seem to believe.
Yeah, the stock market recovered because of incredible innovations in the 20's. It has a ton to do with greed. The types of loans that banks gave out were high risk high reward. They made people believe that they could afford houses way outside their range. Greed has a ton to do with it.
My point was not just about Cantor. My point was that there are companies hiring directly because of the stimulus money. The problem with politics is not the politicians, it is the people. We force them to always be concerned with their next election. We watch this crap like Fox and MSNBC. It sucks because if Congress held its sessions in private, a lot more would get done. You think the founders would have created the Constitution if they had Fox and MSNBC watching everything they did?
Obviously, the rate that companies are hiring does not outweigh the number of people losing jobs. The stimulus, according to Obama, was a preventitive measure to keep unemployment at 8%, and it failed.
If Congress had any balls at all, they would permanently cut ties with special interest and work on the behalf of Americans. What is said in the media is irrelevant.
That is not what the stimulus was supposed to do. The stimulus is supposed to, you know, stimulate the economy. No one said that the purpose of the stimulus was to keep unemployment at 8%. That is a bogus claim that carries little, if any, water. The stimulus has succeeded in slowing the rate of unemployment. Some say without it, unemployment would be over 11. The WH has also drastically reduced lobbyists influence, and Congress should impose the same restrictions that Obama has.
Obama said, "If nothing is done, this recession could linger for years. The unemployment rate could reach double digits."
Obama's appointment of Larry Summers as director of the National Economic Council (not to mention Geithner) proves without question that Obama has no idea what is needed for this country to right itself econimically. Summers and Greenspan under Clinton ignored numerous warnings by Brooklsley Born about toxic OTC derivatives and how they would ruin the economy. She was right.
That proves nothing. The truth is that we cannot judge presidents until after they are done. We don't know how Afghanistan will turn out, we don't know if the stimulus will work in the long run, we don't know if health care will be a success. We have to be patient. You are just giving your opinion. For all you know the stimulus will turn out to be a genius piece of legislation. But for all I know, it will be a complete flop at the end of the day. All I know is, we should both want it to succeed.
You said that Obama never promised that the stimulus would keep unemployment at 8%, I provided his quote. Does this not back up what I said?
And, the truth is that the federal government has rarely been successful in the creation and implementation of entitlement programs. There are always unintended, catastrophic consequences that follow, all paid for by you and I.
The government has a reack record of failures, not successes. It baffles me how so many have fallen for it again.
He did not say that unemployment would fall below 8%. That was a projection, not from the WH. That quote in no way backs up what you said. How about the stats i provided on pre WW2 FDR?
As far as trustworthiness is concerned, I've earned the trust of the overwhelming majority of the parents whose children have attended my classes over the past 19 years.
BTW, Cantor is a corporate puppet, just like 99% of our other elected servants in Washington.
As there is always a common "relativity" when talking to a Liberal...... You cannot back your argument that any negative effect was caused by Repubs...
I don't know why Republicans "Are So Doggone Stupid" to think that giving tax cuts to people will cause them to hire more people or invest in their business. People hire people or invest in their business when they need to - not because of some tax break they got. Republicans have to get over this inane "tax cuts solve everything" meme.
Given what we already know about economics and electoral fortunes, it seems much more likely that economics drives politics rather than the other way around.
Furthermore, the data doesnt map onto congressional majorities at all. Youre going to have to come up with a really good explanation as to why presidential politics exerts this massive and instant effect on the real economy while congressional majorities (you know, the people that actually
Of course I have considered Congressional control, war, inflation, etc. Even controlling for any reasonable factors, the facts remain the same.
Republican presidents are just bad for the economy. The data are what they are. Making excuses for Republican failure does not change the fact that the economy performs terribly under Republicans.
decide if legislation like tax changes, minimum wages, healthcare spending etc gets passed) are irrelevant. What special econo-magic do presidents posses that they can boost GDP growth even in the face of an implacably hostile congress like the one Clinton faced?
Let's look at the today. How's that hope and change working out for you? How is that awesome stimulus package working out? Oh yeah you will blame Bush. WOW you libs sure try to take the easy way out. So you believe that big Gov. and high taxes is the answer? I have not had time today to look up the facts that I want to share. I have been busy working a 12 hour day so that I can help spread the wealth to libs like you who don't contribute.
The facts are what they are. Republicans can always deliver excuses, but they nev er deliver results.
So here is a very simple question for you. Name a single objective economic indicator that has performed better under Republican presidents than under Democratic presidents in the postwar era. Just one.
How about this one....under Reagan the median icome increased by $4500. Don't like that one? Here's another...the GDP grew at 3.5% annually under Reagan. There are many more examples but you would rather ask questions than do any research to find the answers. Just like the hippies of the 60's...all hot air with no solutions
Now let's look at the facts regarding income growth in the postwar era:
In the postwar era, income growth FOR EVERY INCOME BRACKET has grown faster under Democrats than under Republicans.
That means incomes of the poor grew faster under Democrats, incomes of the middle class grew faster under Democrats, and even the incomes of the RICH grew faster under Democrats.
The senator was not discussing income growth, he was talking about jobs and he is right. The government cannot create jobs; however, they can lower federal and state costs of doing business (taxes) allowing businesses to use the money for payroll but then that comes at a price: the government then won't have the money for payroll and will be forced to cut jobs.
Both are bad for the economy. Dems forget about the businesses' needs and Reps forget about the peoples' needs.
Job creation under Democratic presidents is roughly three times that under Republican presidents. And contrary to the Republican spin, the private sector grows faster under Dems than the public sector. Just the opposite is true under Republican presidents.
"Chairman Tom Price (R-GA) requested ...a moment of silence during debate on the Democrats National Energy Tax to remember those who will lose their jobs because of this legislation."
"A tax increase in 1942 boosted federal revenues by 71%...as the US geared up for war after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor..."
"...1982 tax increase only slightly exceeded Clinton's...but it was much bigger in relation to the size of the economy."
You say facts yet fail to produce real numbers for your argument. The government cannot create jobs that will support the economy unless of course we are talking about a government owned and operated economy. I believe this is called Socialism.
Please explain how the government creates jobs? I have looked at all the figures, all the hype, all the facts. Government does not create jobs outside of government.
The first number is total annual job growth, the second is private sector annual job growth: Dem Average 2.74% 2.82% Rep average 1.19% 1.07% Johnson 3.74% 3.5% Carter 3.1% 3.43% Clinton 2.42% 2.66% Truman 2.38% 2.54% Nixon 2.30% 2.16% Reagan 2.04% 2.26% Kennedy 2.28% 2.04% Ford 0.95% 0.66% Eisenhower 0.87% 0.66% Bush 0.59% 0.39% Bush the Lesser 0.28% 0.14%
Can't go by these figures. They do not include a comparison to job losses for existing companies, companies that have closed the doors, and comapnies out-sourcing.
Wow, I am so glad someone said it. It is amazes me how these news media sources employ such dumb news casters. They act like they are really surprised that tax cuts wont help small business.
Most small businesses don't really employ many people. They're mostly groups of self-employed professionals like doctors, lawyers, and accountants. Gotta make sure the money is going to the ones that will rebuild industry through innovation. It's time for America to start making things again if we want to remain globally competitive.
They only make up a little more than half of the workforce, but make up close to 98% of all firms with employees. The only reason it seems like they make more net jobs (60 to 80%) is because there are more of them. Gotta make sure the government subsidies and tax cuts are going to the ones that are really innovating and creating jobs, because most of them aren't doing much. Blanket handouts are a bad investment.
Consumer confidence is shot. Tax cuts won't have as large of an impact because people are saving a greater percentage. The correct argument is:
- The increased money from tax cuts will increase confidence and lead to an expedited sustainable recovery. Government spending is creating a zombie economy because the wealth is being misallocated. We need to be patient and start from the fundamentals if we don't want to end up like Japan.
Come on GOP. You're supposed to be the ones who know economics
The problem is demand. DEMAND. If you give a small construction company a tax cut, would they rush out and hire new staff? no. Why? because nobody's interested in hiring construction companies right now. Now you could incentive demand, i.e. give companies tax write offs for new capital equipment they purchase, or hire more directly hire companies to jobs for the government, which might cause them to hire new staff or purchase more equipments, but simply cutting taxes won't solve all problems.
the problem is NEVER demand. Everyone want things. Demand is unlimited. Its supply thats the limit. I want a yatch, I want a submarine, I want a new computer every year. I want a washing machine. Everyone want things. Its the lack of supply that prevent it from happening
Please take an economics course before replying. There might be one at your local JC. Demand in the economics sense refers to what a buyer is willing and ABLE to purchase. It's not merely wanting things. Therefore in an economic sense there's NOT a lot of demand for submarines, because outside of the military not many people are willing to buy them. The problem isn't that submarines are out of stock the local dealership. Damn, you're dumb.
Orvin: Bush cut taxes for his friends and they sent their money abroad. On balance, Bush tax cuts did not create a single new job during the eight years of his presidency.
Crawl back, Orrin. Crawl back to your miserable little towns of Heber City and Loa and everywhere else children are abused and landscapes are ruined, crawl back to the miserable little idiots who elected you and tell them you failed to make any lasting change on America, and then break out the Jim Jones-brand Koolaid and every last fucking one of you can take a nice, long chug.
We had a recession in the mid-1960s, and lord knows LBJ's Vietnam War didn't help. If Keynes was right, shouldn't the Vietnam War spending and all that spending on antipoverty programs have given us LOTS more prosperity?? But the economy stagnated, and it got worse in the 70s. Stagflation put a HUGE whole in Keynesianism, but no one seemed to care. Ever notice how it's usually big-spending libs who favor Keynesianism? Don't see many right-leaning economists arguing for it. Politics, perhaps
The National Recovery Administration's LEGAL cartelization of business and nonpromotion of antitrust and refusal to take down monopolies probably set back real economic growth at least a year or 2. Artificially high wages and artificially low prices don't work. And oftentimes it was the politically expedient areas for FDR that would get him the most votes that got the most aid, NOT the ones that needed it most. Let's put to rest the myth that gov't can create prosperity.
You make a good point. Only big business can pay high wages, cut prices below cost and still come out ahead with government bailouts. A small company is forced into bancruptcy if it attempts to try these antitrust maneuvers. Now the government is part owner in the auto-manufacturing and financial sectors. We already got a taste of government monopoly with communication, utility and public transportation.
why didn't those two hosts ask back at him why he thinks govn doesn't create jobs? who does he think is paying his salary and providing him with healthcare??
Hatch and the GOP are dumbasses, generally, but he is right about the failure of Keynesianism. Gov't can't create jobs effectively, namely because gov't doesn't respond to market forces. When it does, it just uses anticompetitive practices to screw over the competition and consumers, like the Post Office, Amtrak, you name it. The public option will be no different than all the other bullshit gov't "corporations." Gov't STAY OUT of business and let it work.
It's widely-known that the New Deal prolonged the Depression. Anyone with a brain can see that. Robert Higgs debunked the myth of "wartime prosperity." First of all, how much prosperity could we possibly have had with all that goddamn rationing and not using our full potential?? Think!
And the same people who claimed gov't spending in ww2 created prosperity predicted we'd slide back into recession or depression after the war. DIDN'T HAPPEN! Maybe b/c they're WRONG about the market?
Keynes was a moron, and he should've been relegated to the ash heap of history. If academics and most economists were smart and not political or ideological, they'd realize this and stop worshipping him. What has Keynes done for America lately?? Even Clinton's presidency wasn't exactly a Keynesian revolution! He was Third Way, people! Pretty pro-business for a Dem and a former leader of the DLC. He deregulated banking and signed Graham-Leach-Bliley. Surplus spending.
Keynesianism is just a way for the socialists and big spenders to justify it "intelligently." Fuck Christina Romer and Jared Bernstein. Why the hell would I ever trust ANY economist from UC Berkeley, for christ sake? You think they'd ever hire a pro-market non-Keynesian? Of course not. It's a RADICAL university.
Wow, I never thought I'd here a leading Republican Senator refer to the entire US military as "so doggone stupid." Does he have any military bases in his state? If so, we better close them before they start contributing to the local labor market. Come to think of it, his state would probably do better without any Senators or staff as well.
I wonder why every tax-cut friendly republican president in the last 30 years has left the economy worse than he found it-and why the one democrat left it much better than he found it.
I also wonder-if government isn't supposed to create jobs-why are republicans always putting the blame for creating jobs solely on Obama?
I also wonder why billionaires keep getting richer and the middle class keep getting more impoverished.
You typify all democRATs, i.e., you must lie to protect your failed ideology.
In your world, Ronald Reagan was handed a great economy, and he ruined it by giving people back what THEY earned?
Please, you and the rest of your anti-American ilk head to the nearest international airport and leave on a one-way ticket. America doesn't need anymore freeloaders...enough is enough.
Hey, I give credit where credit is due. I think Reagan did a good job with the economy. However, that's not to say that cutting taxes is always a good idea. There's a happy medium in between cutting taxes further and further fueling our massive deficit, and keeping taxes high. You imply that all democrats are freeloaders, when this is patently untrue. There's no such thing as a free ride in this country, because we are in fact not very socialist.
Congress needs to stop spending money. Look what's going to happen if ObamaCare passes let alone Cap and Tax or another do nothing stimulus or cash for clunkers.... It is time to cut spending, not to raise taxes.
In my world Reagen raised taxes 8 times- and entered office with full blown dementia. The vegetable you cling to had oatmeal for brains and the intellect of a urinal cake.
"In my world" Ronald Reagan massively increased spending, stole all the money set aside for social security to use as general fund money, and in general encouraged massive debts both public and private.
But then again, you probably think he's some cowboy super hero that can do no wrong.
Dude, when Ronald Reagan took office unemployment was 6.5% and three years into his administration and unemployment reached 11%, THREE YEARS LATER !!! Overall Reagan was a good president but he is not the conservative idol that neocons have created. People forget Reagan trippled the national debt, never balanced a budget, crime rate soared, drugs, and a strong push for credit cards, the creation of credit bureau and a recovery based on credit cards. It worked pretty well, but not for long.
Cajunstrat-I will admit one thing. Republicans definitely know how to do what's good for the top 2%. Those people have just seen things get better and better the past 30 years. So if that's who you mean by "people" then you're correct.
That is close to what I have been saying all along in this discussion, but it began with Hatch calling the Democrats stupid, hmmm, pot and kettle, don't you think?
when i see orin hatch i think of term limits for congress and the senate. 4 years and you're out. period. no more getting comfortable, let alone recognizable. dwell in public service obscurity and fade the fuck away already.

He does however need his PC for stimulus and healthcare.

czubspenx 2 years ago
If you are implying that the stimulus bill he passed did infact help the economy then you are still in Obama mania mode. Wake up, he's hurting us more than helping.
wetweasel56 2 years ago 2
The stimulus isn't working, only prolonging the inevitable. Also, Medicare and Medicaid will account for 80% of all government budget increases between now and 2037. Both of these programs are under-funded and performing in the red, which should lead most Americans to believe that the implementation of another government lead entitlement program would be economic suicide.
DrunkenPublicness 2 years ago
The stimulus actually is working. I don't get it, you guys thought it would be passed and in a year things would be back to normal? How about some historical perspective. It took WW2 to get us out of the GD. Getting the economy moving is a lot tougher than messing it up. Most economists project that if we had not passed the stimulus unemployment would be upwards of 11%, and GDP is higher by 1-3% than it would have been. Not to mention it is on pace to reach its goal of jobs saved/created.
nyyanks824 2 years ago
One of the intentions of the stimulus was to keep unemplyment at or below 8%, as Obama assured us it would. How can the job creation objective be on pace, when unemployment is 2 points higher than promised?
And, if you listen to "most economists", they are the same group of ass-clowns who claimed that our financial system was sound, all the way up to America's economic collapse. You still trust them?
And you're right. It was WWII, not the New Deal that helped America emerge from the GD.
DrunkenPublicness 2 years ago
First off, parts of the New Deal worked, but it just wasn't enough. There were plenty of economists who predicted this economic downfall. Obama didn't promise that at all. Most of the jobs have obviously been saved rather than created. However, there are companies that are hiring directly because of the stimulus money. Such as the companies who attended Eric Cantor's most recent jobs fair. Hmmmm let me think, who is more trustworthy, "drunkenpublicness" or professional economists?
nyyanks824 2 years ago
First off, the stock market crash of 1920 and insuing depression lasted 18 months because government allowed the market to correct itself. The GD lasted how long? And you're suggesting that The New Deal had some elements of success? Name them. The US had to enter WWII in order to finally put people back to work again.
There were very few (almost none) economists who predicted the meltdown several years before it happened. They were laughed at by the economists we see every day on cable news.
DrunkenPublicness 2 years ago
I meant moderate success. There were programs that had slight impacts on things like unemployment and inflation. Hoover did nothing different after the 29 crash, and the Depression was worse by 32. Bush continued the same policies and the economy got worse. In 32, there was almost a 25% unemployment rate, in 1940, the rate was down to about 14%. Once we entered WW2 the numbers obviously dropped incredibly. But in those first 8 years, pre WW2, there was a massive drop the UR.
nyyanks824 2 years ago
Despite any success, there is no evidence to suggest that the New Deal helped put an end to the GD. On the other hand, it only took the market 18 months to right itself in the wake of the 1920 crash and it happened without any "Deal".
The GD was caused by the same market forces that caused the housing collapse. It has little, if anything to do with Wall Street greed, as so many seem to believe.
DrunkenPublicness 2 years ago
Yeah, the stock market recovered because of incredible innovations in the 20's. It has a ton to do with greed. The types of loans that banks gave out were high risk high reward. They made people believe that they could afford houses way outside their range. Greed has a ton to do with it.
nyyanks824 2 years ago
My point was not just about Cantor. My point was that there are companies hiring directly because of the stimulus money. The problem with politics is not the politicians, it is the people. We force them to always be concerned with their next election. We watch this crap like Fox and MSNBC. It sucks because if Congress held its sessions in private, a lot more would get done. You think the founders would have created the Constitution if they had Fox and MSNBC watching everything they did?
nyyanks824 2 years ago
Obviously, the rate that companies are hiring does not outweigh the number of people losing jobs. The stimulus, according to Obama, was a preventitive measure to keep unemployment at 8%, and it failed.
If Congress had any balls at all, they would permanently cut ties with special interest and work on the behalf of Americans. What is said in the media is irrelevant.
DrunkenPublicness 2 years ago
That is not what the stimulus was supposed to do. The stimulus is supposed to, you know, stimulate the economy. No one said that the purpose of the stimulus was to keep unemployment at 8%. That is a bogus claim that carries little, if any, water. The stimulus has succeeded in slowing the rate of unemployment. Some say without it, unemployment would be over 11. The WH has also drastically reduced lobbyists influence, and Congress should impose the same restrictions that Obama has.
nyyanks824 2 years ago
Obama said, "If nothing is done, this recession could linger for years. The unemployment rate could reach double digits."
Obama's appointment of Larry Summers as director of the National Economic Council (not to mention Geithner) proves without question that Obama has no idea what is needed for this country to right itself econimically. Summers and Greenspan under Clinton ignored numerous warnings by Brooklsley Born about toxic OTC derivatives and how they would ruin the economy. She was right.
DrunkenPublicness 2 years ago
That proves nothing. The truth is that we cannot judge presidents until after they are done. We don't know how Afghanistan will turn out, we don't know if the stimulus will work in the long run, we don't know if health care will be a success. We have to be patient. You are just giving your opinion. For all you know the stimulus will turn out to be a genius piece of legislation. But for all I know, it will be a complete flop at the end of the day. All I know is, we should both want it to succeed.
nyyanks824 2 years ago
You said that Obama never promised that the stimulus would keep unemployment at 8%, I provided his quote. Does this not back up what I said?
And, the truth is that the federal government has rarely been successful in the creation and implementation of entitlement programs. There are always unintended, catastrophic consequences that follow, all paid for by you and I.
The government has a reack record of failures, not successes. It baffles me how so many have fallen for it again.
DrunkenPublicness 2 years ago
He did not say that unemployment would fall below 8%. That was a projection, not from the WH. That quote in no way backs up what you said. How about the stats i provided on pre WW2 FDR?
nyyanks824 2 years ago
As far as trustworthiness is concerned, I've earned the trust of the overwhelming majority of the parents whose children have attended my classes over the past 19 years.

The facts are what they are. Republicans can always deliver excuses, but they nev er deliver results.
So here is a very simple question for you. Name a single objective economic indicator that has performed better under Republican presidents than under Democratic presidents in the postwar era. Just one.
Richardgwm 2 years ago
How about this one....under Reagan the median icome increased by $4500. Don't like that one? Here's another...the GDP grew at 3.5% annually under Reagan. blaxberg47 2 years ago
@blax,
Thank you for selecting two objective economic indicators that prove my point. The facts about average annual GDP growth:
Dem pres, Dem Congress 4.4%
Dem pres, Rep Congress 3.8%
Rep pres, Dem Congress 3.0%
Rep pres, Rep Congress 2,2%
1948 to 2007.
Republicans are just bad for the economy.
Richardgwm 2 years ago 2
Looks like Obamas going to pull that Dem average waaaaaaaaaaaaaay down.
wetweasel56 2 years ago
@Blax
Richardgwm 2 years ago
You can see a STUNNING graph of this income growth disparity by googling "American political economics in one picture."
Believe me, this is one picture Republicans do not want anyone to see because it reveals the truth:
Republicans are just bad for the economy.
Richardgwm 2 years ago 2
The senator was not discussing income growth, he was talking about jobs and he is right. The government cannot create jobs; however, they can lower federal and state costs of doing business (taxes) allowing businesses to use the money for payroll but then that comes at a price: the government then won't have the money for payroll and will be forced to cut jobs.
Both are bad for the economy. Dems forget about the businesses' needs and Reps forget about the peoples' needs.
peggymartin007 2 years ago
@peggy
The facts regarding job creation:
Job creation under Democratic presidents is roughly three times that under Republican presidents. And contrary to the Republican spin, the private sector grows faster under Dems than the public sector. Just the opposite is true under Republican presidents.
Richardgwm 2 years ago
Now look at tax increase under democrats and republicans, and share that data.

BigPurple121 2 years ago
The problem is demand. DEMAND. If you give a small construction company a tax cut, would they rush out and hire new staff? no. Why? because nobody's interested in hiring construction companies right now. Now you could incentive demand, i.e. give companies tax write offs for new capital equipment they purchase, or hire more directly hire companies to jobs for the government, which might cause them to hire new staff or purchase more equipments, but simply cutting taxes won't solve all problems.
CalexanderJ 2 years ago
the problem is NEVER demand. Everyone want things. Demand is unlimited. Its supply thats the limit. I want a yatch, I want a submarine, I want a new computer every year. I want a washing machine. Everyone want things. Its the lack of supply that prevent it from happening
4rcane 2 years ago
Please take an economics course before replying. There might be one at your local JC. Demand in the economics sense refers to what a buyer is willing and ABLE to purchase. It's not merely wanting things. Therefore in an economic sense there's NOT a lot of demand for submarines, because outside of the military not many people are willing to buy them. The problem isn't that submarines are out of stock the local dealership. Damn, you're dumb.
CalexanderJ 2 years ago
Supply side crackpot. Demand is dollars spent by people buying things. If they don't have the dollars they won't buy anything.

Let's put to rest the myth that gov't can create prosperity.
whoo689 2 years ago
You make a good point. Only big business can pay high wages, cut prices below cost and still come out ahead with government bailouts. A small company is forced into bancruptcy if it attempts to try these antitrust maneuvers. Now the government is part owner in the auto-manufacturing and financial sectors. We already got a taste of government monopoly with communication, utility and public transportation.

why didn't those two hosts ask back at him why he thinks govn doesn't create jobs? who does he think is paying his salary and providing him with healthcare??
darkally 2 years ago

Surplus spending.
whoo689 2 years ago
Keynesianism is just a way for the socialists and big spenders to justify it "intelligently." Fuck Christina Romer and Jared Bernstein. Why the hell would I ever trust ANY economist from UC Berkeley, for christ sake? You think they'd ever hire a pro-market non-Keynesian? Of course not. It's a RADICAL university.

@whoo69
So you're saying allowing hedge funds to merge with conventional banks, and completely deregulating credit default swaps, was a good thing?

Wow, I never thought I'd here a leading Republican Senator refer to the entire US military as "so doggone stupid." Does he have any military bases in his state? If so, we better close them before they start contributing to the local labor market. Come to think of it, his state would probably do better without any Senators or staff as well.

If everyone worked for the government, what kind of economy is that?
peggymartin007 2 years ago
Oh that's rich coming from a republican.
Mr. Hack?

You typify all democRATs, i.e., you must lie to protect your failed ideology.
In your world, Ronald Reagan was handed a great economy, and he ruined it by giving people back what THEY earned?
Please, you and the rest of your anti-American ilk head to the nearest international airport and leave on a one-way ticket. America doesn't need anymore freeloaders...enough is enough.
cajunstrat 2 years ago

@cajunstrat
Would you please care to explain this?

greyfalcon. net/ doonsbury.png
"In my world" Ronald Reagan massively increased spending, stole all the money set aside for social security to use as general fund money, and in general encouraged massive debts both public and private.
But then again, you probably think he's some cowboy super hero that can do no wrong.
greyflcn 2 years ago
Dude, when Ronald Reagan took office unemployment was 6.5% and three years into his administration and unemployment reached 11%, THREE YEARS LATER !!! Overall Reagan was a good president but he is not the conservative idol that neocons have created. People forget Reagan trippled the national debt, never balanced a budget, crime rate soared, drugs, and a strong push for credit cards, the creation of credit bureau and a recovery based on credit cards. It worked pretty well, but not for long.
oldtownkid 2 years ago 2
Cajunstrat-I will admit one thing. Republicans definitely know how to do what's good for the top 2%. Those people have just seen things get better and better the past 30 years. So if that's who you mean by "people" then you're correct.
IAMtheNewWorldOrder 2 years ago
Like oh my gosh don't these darn people know what's good for them. I mean it's like these democrats were elected or something.

The people who are stupid are the ones who keep Hatch in office - take away his government job health care and benefits

What you bet there's footage of Hatch saying that cutting military spending, reduces jobs?
Incidentally, Republicans aren't that great at job growth

That is close to what I have been saying all along in this discussion, but it began with Hatch calling the Democrats stupid, hmmm, pot and kettle, don't you think?
