I love this arrangement, absolutely gutted that I missed him on this tour as the whole album is so strong. I am writing a Sceience Fiction trilogy & this song is the last three pages :) Absolutely sums up the emotion, beautiful, powerful, PG is King!

not to keen on his singin in this song although i think this video the singing is better than the others but the instrumental is epic love it ... especially in gangs of new york
I'd take this over the studio version any day. The drum machine, combined with the heavy chorus make the song. One of Gabriel's finest, and certainly my favorite.
I was just rape by powerful emotions from watching this performance...Love the transition from 4:20 till end...what a master piece.Peter only gets better with age!
Well. Every time after listening to this song I am instantly back at his performance in cologne some 7 years ago. I can only confirm what someone else already said: Especially live it is a stunning experience and the power emerging from this song definetly left the people somewhat shocked. The slow start and the constant rising of power and speed leading to an unbelievable intense final left us all standing there trembling. It's a masterpiece. Another one. Made by a REAL genious. I love him.
See how subdued the audience is at the end, noone is even moving. This song is so powerful one would submit to it with complete surrender. My favorite part starts at about 4:36 when notes start climbing one step at a time. Just when you think it cannot climb any higher than it already is, the waves of well-orchestrated sounds hit you evern harder and push you even higher till you feel like you are in the realm of divinity, captured and entranced by some unseen power this song is hard-core.
I still can't get over this song even after 10 years. The emotions it expells from me are as profound as it did the first time. This song is legend, no doubt about it. It would be on the before-I-die wish to have the honor to see reprecated the full-blown live reproduction of this performance/song. But Peter Gabirel is getting old, I really wonder if he would ever have another giant production such as this one.
@HonestCriticzzzzzz Peter is singing about substance. "Turn up the signal/ wipe out the noise." Convey information in what you say, or don't say anything at all. Be real or don't bother to even be.
@HonestCriticzzzzzz , thats a a very good question... and guitarasaur... no, peter is talking about something else... peter is talking about that moment when Neo and agent Smith merge, and the light is turned up...
I guess it conveys some sort of hopelessness about "the noise in the world", war, religious conflicts, etc. Possibly emphasised by the conflicts in the middle east which is ruining so many peoples lives (cradle's burning). Turn up the signal, as in making the right choices to give peace to humanity instead of the constant noise and hate that ruins the world. Thats one interpretation. :)
That's pretty much what I've felt to be the interpretation, as well; my idea was broader, but essentially the same: not just with the Middle East but with people's lives in general. I connected with this song at a low point in my life when things were very bleak for me; I had been assaulted and was trying to find a way through the heartbreak. This song spoke to me that, yes, there is s**t in this world, but the only thing worth living for is the good. See: First 4 or 5 lines of the song. :)
sounds like they lifted the track from Khan's performance with PG at the VH1 Honors awards in 1996 and used them here. that version is on YT. it's awesome.
OMFG. This is *such* a fantastic version of an awesome track. So powerful, it puts shivers down my spine and tears in my eyes every time. Only music this bloody good could ever do that.
OH MY GOD, this is heavenly from 4.50 look how they transition from one scale to another.....thats godly....no comparison.....I am totally blown away. Feels like open heaven!!
@bluzane when i listen to PG i only think in one thing........ where the hell he gets these ideas from, i think of his mind and how it is processing these lovely music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I read this book signal to noise about a guy who makes a makes a "liquid quantum computer" to decipher an alien signal and he meets an alien who wants to trade tech and the alien trades this "JUMP ORB" and its this lil ball that uses rotational energy of body in space to generate a sling shot effect to travel through speace time instaneously.Side effect is if use a planet the planet stops to spin and theirs an invasion and the earth is gone and oh man its a good book and theres a sequal
its Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan singing in this song. Nusrat is from Pakistan's city of Faisalabad. The excellent vocalist that Pakistan has produced.
Well the concept of god goes back to a time when man began to call upon the heavens for gifts lightning for fire rain for crops as in many cases these were seen as gifts from god/gods.This became a astrotheological system wherein the greastest symbol is the most prominent in sky ie The Sun, so one could argue that the sun is god. This dogma of god in the sky is not a local occurence in that continental separation has not stopped the rise of many similar systems of theology that worship the sky.
Well today there is no real definition of what god is. Typically you get this god is mystery blah blah god is love whatever whatever. What people forget is that god is created concept by human culture to give a sense of knowing when we really dont shit.
Yeah. I mean the only change that ever comes in history is when people act.But the majority of people who have to act dont want to cuz they dont want the responsibilty when shit gets fucked up. so we let government and business run the show. If we the people truly wanted it any other way things wouldnt be the way they are because on the grand scale of human consiousness the way the world is is the way we want it.
I don't understand the lyrics of this song. but all I can say is that every time I listen to this song, it freezes me. I never have such feelings when I hear a song like this one
First time I heard this song, I was stunned by the powerful arrangement of the music, the steady and sure climb to the peak that explodes into atomic ripples sustaining for a good 3-4 minutes. I saw red earth in my mind's eye, burning in an infernal brought upon with a vengeance by the angel of death and fury.....this song has had to have been divinely inspired.
Seriously? Terrorist state of USA? The nation that has provided the most humanitarian aid in the world? And Israel, the nation that fights every day to keep an ever-diminishing segment of land? And Great Britain, the very country Peter Gabriel is FROM? Terrorist states indeed.
And by the way, "Thou Shalt Not Kill" is referring to murder. God had Israel (the nation to which that commandment was originally given, ironically) go to war; war entails killing. I doubt God is contradicting Himself.
I have always love this song but this version is superb! It's darker/meaner and Gabby's vocals - more powerful than the one we find on the album - suits Nusrat's godly voice. Nice!
It is som much more powerful with the African percussion behind it.Hearing it live with 25 Burundi drummers behind it would probably be one of the most intense live performances ever.
I have a concert cd where he speaks of growing up on a farm, and being at his grandparents place where he looked at an Atlas. The Atlas was repeated covered in pink, and when he asked his father why, his father replied: "It's British son".
