The first roofs on the DS were made of transluscent fibreglass, allowing diffused light into the cabin! In fact you can remove the roof from a DS and drive it without one as the roof is not acting as a stressed member and all the door and body panels can be removed without compromising the cars structural integrity. What a motor. Only in a DS. Chrissy Boy
Yeah but not with as much style Skahoovey as a DS. The Rover P6 is too much of a Rover. It just reeks of pipe and slippers. Even BMW never managed to shake the image off. In some respects positively encouraged it in the awful Rover 4 series for instance, the top model of which sold for over £17,000 complete with maroon paint and velour drapes and draylon covers. Ugh. They should have added chintz cushions for good measure. That summed Rover up really which is why they're now called Over instead.
Humm. Interesting reply & one I like, but unable to answer in the limited response box. I agree on beauty. The DS is a stunner. A Goddess it was named after. But beauty is individual. The P6 was a very sexy car when new. Advanced body design, suspension & engine. The 'T4' had a nose like the DS, but bosses said no to shark nose.
The poor DS had pre-war engine&suffered from wet cardboard box rot. Dads ID19 safari dissolved in two years.(&His404s!)'Adequate' engine,'good taxi', piss build.RSVP
yes,you have to take care of these cars, wash the bottom after salty roads, because they can rost away if not looked after. i have one, that is 36 years old and still in one piece, so i dont see how can it dissolve in 2 years :). But its true I dont live in Britain, maybe the weather..
about the engine: it was modified many times, during the 25 years the DS was produced. In the last years it also had an engine with electronic fuel injection. Mine is with carburetor, i travelled 6000 kms this summer with no problem sometimes at speeds of 130 km/h or more. dont know much about rovers. well i've heard that land rover uses similar suspension in some late models that citroen used in 1955 :)
I think I should clear things up here. I love the DS and think its a great car, I alway have. I only started this because someone said only the DS had a removable roof, which is not true! I lived near the Slough plant and they were badly built in the 60's. They rusted badly. Dads rotted and it was 4 years old. It may have been the damp UK weather as his Pug 404's also melted away. Still a great car though and i still want one! It really is a Godess of cars, but I like lots of other classics too.

I owned two DSs, and the only cars to come close with the technolgy were the P6 Rover and the NSU Ro80....

I recall hearing that the roof could be ordered transparent like this as a special order.
