French people in France consider French to be a language like any other, Living in French Canada, you'd probably find that most people don't consider French to be 'romantic' and 'cool' language more than it is something you use on a daily basis and need to have a better chance at a good job (English-French bilingualism is important for many jobs) and you'd probably be surprised that French is NOT a chick manget here.

I want and need French. I live in Quebec and being English-French bilingual is a major asset in finding a job (some people will refuse to even consider your application if you only know English or French). learning a foreign language is part of many countries academic curriculums and studies show that being able to speak more than one language is actually good for your brain. But let me ask you, doesn't the government already force you to attend school until the age of 16, force you to take certain years of math, english, science, etc and in some states pass an exam to graduate from high school? Spanish is the most widely spoken language on this side of the globe and much of our trade is done with Spanish-speaking countries. Why Spanish? Most people learn English because it is still largely the language of Business. That is true, we only need to know English in America, but it also wouldn't hurt to know other languages. Knowing other languages opens up more opportunity and wealth for people. And I think the U.S. could use some more of both. Don't you? Why do you think the EU is wealthier and has two currencies worth more than ours? It's because they have better education and they can communicate better. In the EU, knowing English also helps, but knowing one or two others isn't really a disadvantage either.
The other thing about that is that European countries are MUCH smaller, and so with a diversity of languages spoken in such close proximity, it is necessary to be able to speak another language. In the EU (which is smaller than the US)there are 22 official languages!!! Even so, I still took 4 years of French in High School, and am minoring in French at my college. Contrary to what many think, it really does HELP to learn a new language...but should not be MANDATORY!!

and here the people talks 3 languages (normally) : French German and Italian
Although the more importants are French, German and Still English

if you listen carefully he says that you should not be worried about inmigrants learning the language (he even says they will do), you should pay attention to your own knowledge.
Being able to speak to 250 million spanish speakers in america can be important, and it surely increases your opportunities and your knowledge.
In Mexico, a lot of people learn english, so they are able to speak to you, its not a matter of patriotism.

He's one of the most popular figures in the world; if he supports an issue at this point (he has tremendous influence because of his popularity) with time social pressure will force individuals to learn Spanish, a language that neither founded America nor is the heritage language of those who will be forced to learn. French people in France consider French to be a language like any other, Living in French Canada, you'd probably find that most people don't consider French to be 'romantic' and 'cool' language more than it is something you use on a daily basis and need to have a better chance at a good job (English-French bilingualism is important for many jobs) and you'd probably be surprised that French is NOT a chick manget here.

The big problem with this is not so much what Obama was advocating, but more in the line of HOW he said it. I think that it's pretty insulting to Americans and many people of the world (and I'm not American) that the folk of their country should learn another language so that the immigrants would be happier.
What he should have said was that Americans need to speak more languages, and give examples of why and how, stating the benefits to the country and it's standing... (continued).

Leave it up to the people to learn their choice of second or third language. I myself speak three languages (though my French is not prefect yet), and I intend to master at least four languages.

That should be up to the person to decide. The fact is, 90% of the world's languages are spoken by 6% of the people. Some languages that are still being taught have no practical day-to-day application, like Latin (though it is a useful language when you're working to translate and decode ancient documents and such). It would depend on the purpose and need of the individual. I'm learning French because I need it, later I'll learn Chinese because I want to.

I want and need French. I live in Quebec and being English-French bilingual is a major asset in finding a job (some people will refuse to even consider your application if you only know English or French). It's also a personal choice because I was taught French in school as a child and I never quite got the hang of it, so I decided to set things straight and become fluent in it once and for all.

But it would not harm Americans if they would learn a second or even third language at school. I suppose that allready happens. But not many Americans are able to speak a different language. learning a foreign language is part of many countries academic curriculums and studies show that being able to speak more than one language is actually good for your brain. But let me ask you, doesn't the government already force you to attend school until the age of 16, force you to take certain years of math, english, science, etc and in some states pass an exam to graduate from high school? If there were more options to learn English and Spanish in elementary-high school, it wouldn't even need to be a requirement. These schools would fill up so quickly. Trust me, people want Spanish in our schools, but the politicians make it seem the other way.

Why should the Danes, the Dutch and the Swedes learn English then? Yet somehow they do. Spanish is the most widely spoken language on this side of the globe and much of our trade is done with Spanish-speaking countries. Being bilingual can only benefit a person, both professionally and intellectually.

For example, kids in Spain learn English and French, but, naturally, Spain has official language Spanish.
U.S. has common language English, but in the schools, kids can learn another language too.

For Barack to say "you need to MAKE SURE your child can speak SPANISH" is wrong for several reasons. 1st, he can ENCOURAGE Americans to learn other languages, but not MAKE them. 2nd, why did he emphasize SPANISH? Because he was speaking at a gathering of Hispanics & was pandering! Learning other languages should be a CHOICE. French anyone?

Why Spanish? Most people learn English because it is still largely the language of Business. It certainly doesn't hurt to learn a second language and learning is admirable regardless but this really illustrates the contempt that individuals like Obama have for America. They look down on America as if they are ashamed.
It is because we have such a great country already that we don't have a great pressing need to learn other's languages. That should be something that makes us proud not ashamed.

That is true, we only need to know English in America, but it also wouldn't hurt to know other languages. Knowing other languages opens up more opportunity and wealth for people. And I think the U.S. could use some more of both. Don't you? Why do you think the EU is wealthier and has two currencies worth more than ours? It's because they have better education and they can communicate better. In the EU, knowing English also helps, but knowing one or two others isn't really a disadvantage either.

The other thing about that is that European countries are MUCH smaller, and so with a diversity of languages spoken in such close proximity, it is necessary to be able to speak another language. In the EU (which is smaller than the US)there are 22 official languages!!! Even so, I still took 4 years of French in High School, and am minoring in French at my college. Contrary to what many think, it really does HELP to learn a new language...but should not be MANDATORY!!
