A VERY important thing is keeping the opponent's head close to your chest as you pass the leg. Especially if you are not very flexible because it will take longer to do that. GSP is obviously a beast and he can pass his leg before the guy knows what's going on. But yeah, maybe using like a muay thai kinda clinch with one hand and holding his wrist with the other hand as you pass the leg

This exactly is what happened in the Dustin Hazelett vs Mark Bocek fight. Hazelett was on the bottom in what Eddie Bravo calls: "3/4 guard.", but right as he brings the leg over his shoulder for the omoplata attack, the opponent on the top has to pass the guard. Basically it's a race to who gets there first. A race for the bottom person to get the leg over the opponents shoulder, and for the top guy to quickly pass the guard. For example, at 0:10 is the the pivotal point of a guard pass.
