I'm curious what is the definition of Violence in this movie context?

For me mental abuse is also an violence, so it's ironic that there is no red light at all until a real and out of control fight.

If these situations are real, will the scientist stop that? Seemed like they allow those abusive to happen, so it can not say that this is "experiment" cause the scientist doesn't follow their own rules.

This movie is very much based on Zimbardo's Stanford Prison study. People who are interested in why people do what they do will find this movie interesting. Those who study psychology or sociology could find it a great topic of discussion with peers. Also, those who are interested in the non-fiction version of the study can find tons of info online now, but I strongly suggest that you see Zimbardo's talk on TED where he links his prison study to other prison atrocities including at Abu Graib.

This film, as many (like Shutter Island), is a metaphor for the human condition as dictated by the Gods (as in those watching from above). We all make a deal to incarnate into this prison we call life. We are either the oppressors or the oppressed. After we stuggle, love, and most of all fight, we are then released back into the abiss w/ payment in hand to be who we once were. The movie is trying to say that this life is just an experiment, and that in the end, we will ALL be rewarded :)

@sralmy. Movie is nothing to do with god or life or rewards at all, it's based around an experiment conducted by Philip ZImbardo who tried to recreate prison life and the film shows false advertisement within the papers, the real advertisement did not say it was safe and it was only $20 a day.

Zimbardo got engrossed in the study and idly stood by as men were abused and their individuality taken away from them, some of the participants that were prisoners needed treatment. NO GOD INVOLVDED

The study was conducted by a team of researchers lead by TENURED PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSOR, PHILIP ZIMBARDO ... AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY. The purpose of this study ( "STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT" ) was to discover the psychological effects of becoming a prisoner or prison guard. The treatment of the "prisoners" was f***ed up for sure, but history is history.

It's not a German movie remake. Anyone who studied psychology or have taken some psyc courses knows that this movie is loosely based on the 1971 prison experiment conducted at Stanford. One dead giveaway besides the mock prison theme is that the experiment was supposed to last 14 days but only made it to day 6--same in the movie, as in the actual experiment.
