Had the privileged of working this camp with Josh and Ray Tannner. It was at Clayton High School, In Clayton, NC the winter Josh was traded from the Reds. Got to speak with him at length and was a genuine guy. It was also a thrill to witness Coach Tanner, who is the head coach of The University of South Carolina and Back to Back National Champions work with Hamilton on this hitting mechanics talk.
It wasn't really a camp it was just a day kinda thing where they teach techniques and mechanics. Im pretty sure its called purpose driven baseball. Its in north carolina about 45 min from raleigh I cant remember where exactly though. It was worth it to go, Josh is an awesome guy. I got an autograph and shook his hand. It was pretty cool.
Coach let the professional teach his technique and you can go back to babysitting college guys...thanks...and who is he to talk about someone being cocky? smh...

When the pitcher brings his knee up you should load... when he strides toward the plate ready to release the ball, u should start transfering your wait foward..

You bring your hands back in your load and about half way through(so when your half way to as far as your going to bring your hands back) you stride. OBVIOUSLY, you base your timing off the pitchers timing. If the pitcher is one of those guys who pauses for a second once he lifts his leg, your obviously going to have to adjust. But in general, your hands should start going back about when his knee gets to it's peak.

Just because you coach a championship team doesn't mean you can develop average high school players into professional athletes. There is literally no correlation. High level teams only accept top high school players, who probably dominated since they were in tee-ball.

head shouldn't move it's the shoulders. head stays down. This was a good video. wish it was longer. I actually like the tip on when to load. Good to tell young players this.
Swivel. Means your head doesn't move up or down during the swing. If it does then you misjudge the trajectory of the ball and it makes it difficult to hit, especially off-speed stuff. The only major leaguer I can think of that drops his head ans still mashes was Jason Giambi.
"Head on a swivle" means your head rotates on axis. Another way to look at it is being able to look left or right without having to turn your entire body. This helps with balance through your swing.

Josh Hamilton is by far my favorite outfielder. He is the best all around player in the game. His swing is perfect. He reminds me alot of Griffey. Its amazing to be away from the game for so long and come back and pick up where he left off. I just finished his book. Its really amazing what he went through. I recommend it. I dont read that many books, but i really enjoyed his book. Josh Hamilton is one of the best players in the game, and could rank among the history's elite.

I went to a couple interviews where Josh talked about his addiction to drugs. They were ruining his life and so he decided to clean up his act. He obviously did and hes a great guy the way he goes and talks to kids about the dangers and affects of drugs. when ppl say "swingin down on the ball" they dont mean the bat is actually going down as it contacts the ball. but the quickest way for the barrel to reach the ball is too start the bat down on the ball. watch any major leaguer and this is wat it will look like. but as the bat enters the zone it will flatten out so your not actually swinging down. but this deal of swingin "up which matches the flight of the ball" is not true. however it would b good if all u hit is 75 mph fastballs

I totally agree. I've been to countless clinics, and play baseball in college, and in my experience, high level college hitters/coaches/ and professional players (ex pros, and current ones) DO NOT know how to teach what they do. At my college (Tennessee) guys for the most part go about their business, with hardly any instruction or teaching from coaches, because they know none of it is useful.
When they swing slow they do not carry the momentum into the firm front side. Most people who teach and say squish bug do not really pay attention to this one seemingly small but very important detail. Most people just rotate, (squish the bug) on the ball of the back foot. They are missing a lot of bat speed that is generated by the lower body and these are the people who generally collapse the back side causing the hitter to miss or generally pop up.

Josh Hamilton is a great player, and it's awesome that he went through what he did and he's still where he is now...but I wouldn't put him in the top 15 players in baseball, let alone history's elite.

@81Juice81 Then your fantasy team must be absolute crap. Every other day he's making all-star quality catches in the outfield & he's batting almost .360 for the year. That includes POWER numbers & not simply singles for average. He had an unbelievable 2008 and somehow this year is a career year. I don't know which 15 guys from today you'd choose over Hamilton but I'd feel awful sorry for your team if you were a GM.

I went to a couple interviews where Josh talked about his addiction to drugs. They were ruining his life and so he decided to clean up his act. He obviously did and hes a great guy the way he goes and talks to kids about the dangers and affects of drugs. So now hes preventing kids from ruining their live just like he almost ruined his so Stonehooksfan2 you should shut up.

when ppl say "swingin down on the ball" they dont mean the bat is actually going down as it contacts the ball. but the quickest way for the barrel to reach the ball is too start the bat down on the ball. watch any major leaguer and this is wat it will look like. but as the bat enters the zone it will flatten out so your not actually swinging down. but this deal of swingin "up which matches the flight of the ball" is not true. however it would b good if all u hit is 75 mph fastballs

Clearly you know nothing about baseball, almost all coaches clinics are done in the winter when people who coach and play baseball aren't busy. The fact that it would be cold during winter would account for the fact that they were inside

I totally agree. I've been to countless clinics, and play baseball in college, and in my experience, high level college hitters/coaches/ and professional players (ex pros, and current ones) DO NOT know how to teach what they do. At my college (Tennessee) guys for the most part go about their business, with hardly any instruction or teaching from coaches, because they know none of it is useful.

When they swing slow they do not carry the momentum into the firm front side. Most people who teach and say squish bug do not really pay attention to this one seemingly small but very important detail. Most people just rotate, (squish the bug) on the ball of the back foot. They are missing a lot of bat speed that is generated by the lower body and these are the people who generally collapse the back side causing the hitter to miss or generally pop up.
