In Praise of this ballerina! I wish I were Leonardo di Vinci so I could draw your portrait like that of Mona Lisa. But you are more beautiful than Mona Lisa; or Michael Angelo so I could carve a statue of yours with all the subtle curves; or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart so I could compose a serenade befitting your sublime grace; or Shakespeare so I could write a story like that of Juliet for you; or Sten Spielberg so I could choreograph your every move; or Rumi so I could compose poem after poem....
I think its overly done in my opinion, I think technically she is very accurate, might say too much, and has a crazy extension and pointe but for some reason there is something I dont like from her, she is good , better than many, but she is not like lopatkina or marianela from the royal, cause she lacks interpretation, like actually feeling the role, she doesnt captivate me she gives me this my leg goes higher than yours kind of feeling. but she is great.
This Ballet "Carmen"was composer in music for Bizet and choreographer was the cuban Albnerto Alonso who made it for Alicia Alonso Prima ballerina. This ballet was presented first in early 70 and later was danced by Maya Plisetskaia in the Bolshoi ballet theater in Moscu. Those were in many years the only two ballet dancer in permission to show that masterpiece! The choregraphy is fantastic!
@reglalejandra I hate this ballet.... The choreography and music is ridiculous. It is this strange cheap circus act. I see it as a strange spanish science experiment. I know I should politely say this is not my taste but I can't.
I really like Zakharova in a lot of things, but not this. Her presentation is very modern, even though it's a classic piece, and that kind of spoils the feeling for me. Technically she's very nice.
She always keeps her head between her shoulders, she looks like ostrich, sorry but it is horrible. her neck always looks to 45 grades in front of her body, the proportions of her body are bad for the ballet; open your eyes and then your mind, should be a good advice for your blindness, I saw the best LIVE performances IN THE WORLD, OKAY
@billangazzelas9 that's why she is one of the most appreciated and famous ballerina in the world. Gosh, your opinion is so irrelevant, you have no idea.
I thought it was spelled BALLEH. I didn't understand what she is trying to convey. Any way it was something beautiful. the movements, the music.....good something classic...
I may not have the eye yet for what’s great and whats good, and I glad i don’t, I think all these Russian ballerinas are wonderful... I cant find one I don't love ! I must admit I'm a big Evgenia Obratsova fan, but I think its those green eyes !!! :)
@hotlikefireee ...bing something different. Sveta brings something different to every role she interprets, she is breathtaking whatever she does. And she is certainly one of the best ballerina ever. So is Osipova, LOpatkina, and others.
Unfortunately technique, flexibility and mechanic movements are not enough in ballet. To move like that can every gymnast, but dance needs emotions as well, it's not less important. Here I can not see emotional and live dance, only technique....
@xenie01st really? i disagree! Look at her face! the way she even runs! It's just more settle and not as overly acted as many others do it. I acctually like this better. She doesn't overdo it! She doesn't play a character that happens to be Carmen, she is Carmen when she dances!
@xenie01st I agree but there are lot of problems to find ballerina who is doing both: movements and tehnique and to be harizmatic and a good actress... havent seen that for a long time..
Her technique is impressive but I'm not fond of her expression. For me her movements are precise, but mechanic. It's like she's not feeling it at all. Maya Plisetskaya, on the other hand, does not have her legs going up so far, but -oh- her expression and passion! Carmen is a role that requires attitude, not technique. I think Svetlana has it all to be one of the best ballerinas, she just needs to put more emotion on her moves. I prefer expression than technique, so for now she won't amuse me.
Thanks for posting this. I admire Svetlana's wonderful technique and flexibility . Her lovely long legs and beautifully arched feet bring elegance to whatever she dances. The amazing Maya Plisetskaya was not so tall and her interpretation of Carmen was fused with fire and passion. Sadly, I did not ever see Alicia Alonso in this role. Adding to the excitement of this ballet is the adaptation of Bizet's Carmen music (for strings, percussion & vibraphone) by Maya's husband, Rodion Shchedrin.
@emiliajovanovic that's rude. And I'm sure your 6 years old daughter don't know that much about ballet for that matters. Svetlana is a fantastic ballerina and she might not be the best Carmen ever but she is still amazing. It's not her best role, i agree but I don't think Maya is not any better.
@Missnewyork28 Sorry, but I think the one being rude is you for replying to her in such a manner. This should be a space where people share their thoughts, so wether you like it or not, you should respect that. You are in no position of diminishing her daughter's opinion, they are as valid as yours.
@juflesch You should re read the comment. It was disrespectul. That poster does not respect Svetlana's hard work, and whether he-she and her-his daughter like Svetlana or not, she deserved a little more respect than that. What matters is not that I think about Svetlana but how that other person diminished her work, taking as example her-his daughter opinion. If she prefers Maia, fine, she still has this innocent eyes. But the way the posters used it, it was insulting.
@juflesch If you consider that comment as a "shared thought", then, so is mine. And I'm sorry if I think a 6 year old girl's opinion doesn't matter. She likes it, good for her. She does not, good for her. She has all the time to learn, to grow up and to make her opinion by HERSELF. And not because Mommy showed her 2 videos of famous ballerinas. (And I'm sure it was a little biased.)
@sweetaliena What do you have to be so nasty. Every ballerina has its own style, its best role. There is no need to say thay she is awful compared to other ballerinas. Plus, not evryone agrees with you, I don't like at all Plisetkaya's Carmen for instance.
@Missnewyork28 No, I'm not nasty. When you have videos of the people who originated the role, you can't help to compare them to others because they worked with the choreographer and they know how to approach the role. When reprising a role, you have to be has good or better than the original casting. Just like Plisetkaya was as good as Alonso. Zakharova didn't come close to the interpretation and artistry of these two. They're was no nuance or substance. She danced the choreography, that's all.
@sweetaliena I disagree. Every ballerina has its style and she makes her own interpretation of it. Maya may look more whorish but Sveta is flirty and seductive. Maya arm carriage is everything but seductive. She is suppose to interpret a prostitute and she looks so rigid.I don't find her any better than Sveta. I'm gonna quote the artistic director of the mariinsky. They don't choose prima ballerinas because they can interpet the role like previous ballerina. They choose them because they
@Missnewyork28 Carmen is not a prostitute. She's a gypsy. Carmen is manipulative and fierce and Maya played it that way. And quoting the artistic director who's ruining the Mariinsky do not help the credibility of your point. Zakharova is not good at character roles, she more of lyrical/classical dancer. Lopatkina interprets Carmen better than Zakharova.
@sweetaliena So because you think the director ruins the mariinsky, what he said can't be considered as interesting ? I totally agree with what he said. Ballet is not about creating clone of retired balerinas to do the same thing all over again. Zakharova is a breathtaking Odette, a manipulative Odile, a sweet and fragile Giselle, a touching Nikiya. They are plenty of roles, she is by far one of the best. So don't say that she is not good at role only based on what YOU think of her Carmen.
@sweetaliena I don't like Maya's Carmen but at least I have the respect not to say that eveyone else is better. So please, respect my opinion (and not only mine, I read people prefer Zakharova as well.)
@Missnewyork28 First of all you started it. I gave my opinion about this performance and you said I was being nasty. If you read my comment, I didn't talk about clones. I talk about being as good or better than the original creator of the role. Like you said, "don't say that she is not good at role only based on what YOU think of her Carmen." Same thing applies to you about Maya Plisetkaya about this role. So, practice what you preach and leave people who don't agree with you alone.
@sweetaliena Don't worry I do. I said I don't like Maya, not that she was awful compared to Svetlana or that she can't interpret role. I just don't like the way she does and to me they are equally as good. You should re read my comments before making those kind of statements. You can have your opnion, I surely don't care. The way you gave it bothered me

@Verdredi I agree with you, I really think she's awesome, but unlike lukkha1, I think the wardrobe is very important in the showbusiness... And that dress looks more like a figure-skating or rythmic gymnastics dress.
She'd still be amazing in a jogging suit, but it wouldn't be artistic at all, right??
@pirouette4life :There is no way Zakharova's Carmen could EVER rival life that Plisetskaya ... this is technique with an attitude"
Re: in contrary, technically, you can say the same to Plisetskaya, Ballet without technique is less than the folk dance. Besides, ballet Carmen is more contemporary, the character is not much depth to build compare with those classical role ( Giselle, La Bayadère, Swan Lake..) . She is a great modern dancer as well, she did this role well and appropriately.
There is no way Zakharova's Carmen could EVER rival the life that Plisetskaya gave to the role. It was so raw then, this is technique with an attitude.
This was ... fascinating. She totally drew me in. I don't know why, but she did. It's a shame that she missed some accents in the music but hey... this somehow didn't matter as much... o.O
Как это делала Плисецкая! Все в такт, все идеально с технической точки зрения и сколько страсти, и женственности, и даже сколько некоего колдовства было в ней! Я так полагаю, если балерина всем этим не обладает - то ей лучше не браться за Кармен.
I have not seen the Tamara Rojo's version (I like Tamara very much), but what I saw until today it is the best. Some details of the choreography could be better, but Svatlana as Carmen is what I expected as the character and had never seen.
I saw Carmen with plisekova and I did NOT like it at all I mean she does NOT really look like a ballerina look at svetlana her arches and her body I mean wow. I definitely prefer svetlana. plisekova to me is awful NOT a ballerina. Svetlana is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I adore Plisetskaya's the most. I really like this one as well, though. I feel like her extensions work to her advantage here and don't look out of place as they sometimes do in other pieces (i.e. Giselle etc.)
yeah you can dance like agoddess but if you dont bring the carmen out to the audience then art makes nos ense anymore.hello?she is carmen!!!!carlos sauras carmen is the best .carmen needs to be a woman like maya!!!!
@lilli22 That's the impression I got too..Amazing touches to everything dancewise but not enough of Carmen, the character, she's playing it "let's make believe" , not bringing it out.. But my G-d what a perfection. even though, very rarely, her grand battement looks as of a rythmic gymnast. But don't get me wrong, I totally appreciate her greatness, she totally absorbs your attention while watching, and she's so musically sensitive..
Svetlana is a very expressive dancer, who moves with grace and precision timing. I loved watching her foot work - it was so smooth and flowed from one turn to the other with perfection. Really nice to watch - many thanks for posting the video.
What an amazing performance, an excellent combination, ++++++++++sssssss She has one of the best Pointe and the Hip Snap that i have seen in a long long time.
A combo of Ballet, Modern Dance, Tango and also a little flavor or a lot of it for some :) the Burlesque.
Too thin? Helpless?? Look how she is working right down to her toes. And in the later clips she is working that policeman wonderfully. It isnt all appearance or technique....its a lot of acting as well.
don't get me wrong, svetlana zakharova is breath taking and beautiful... but in some ways, i feel like she's almost TOO pretty and TOO light and graceful to be Carmen. i feel as though carmen needs to be "heavier" and more down, and earthy. i don't know how to explain it... like carmen should have the personality of a wild horse, and svetlana is just a fairy...
Sorry to all Zvetlana's admirors, but in Carmen she is absolutely untasty, bland and anonymous....she just disappears in confront of Lady Maya Plissetskaya!
she´s a wonderful dancer at least she´s too thin as a carmen- "woman full of milk and blood" she does not have the ability to put there the right passion in her dancing-just sayin´----
In Praise of this ballerina! I wish I were Leonardo di Vinci so I could draw your portrait like that of Mona Lisa. There is no way Zakharova's Carmen could EVER rival the life that Plisetskaya gave to the role. It was so raw then, this is technique with an attitude.

Do you know where I can watch this full ballet piece, or where I can download it? Thank you.

This was ... fascinating. She totally drew me in. I don't know why, but she did. It's a shame that she missed some accents in the music but hey... this somehow didn't matter as much... o.O

I love her cause of her foot work but i could never love her as much as Alicia -.- but gosh she owned this dance

i find this choreography oddly misaligned to the music.
russkizfb 7 months ago
Как это делала Плисецкая! Все в такт, все идеально с технической точки зрения и сколько страсти, и женственности, и даже сколько некоего колдовства было в ней! Я так полагаю, если балерина всем этим не обладает - то ей лучше не браться за Кармен.

honestly I prefer tamara rojo's version
ariniballetten 8 months ago
I have not seen the Tamara Rojo's version (I like Tamara very much), but what I saw until today it is the best. Some details of the choreography could be better, but Svatlana as Carmen is what I expected as the character and had never seen.

How can you not fall in love with Svetlana?
Her movements are breathtaking, I aspire to be everything this girl is..
She seems to have the perfect balance between playfulness and being
extremely graceful.. something I fail to achieve when dancing.
I either go to one end of the extreme or the other.. never the perfect
balance..
Gaaah, Svetlana I adore you as well as envy you <3

Wtf does she do at 1:27, I watched it over and over and can't figure it out. Her left foot, does she deliberately sickle it in the fouette or what?
Cazarellagaia 9 months ago
@Cazarellagaia She just turned the back leg in as it came down.

Giselle etc.)

yeah you can dance like agoddess but if you dont bring the carmen out to the audience then art makes nos ense anymore.hello?she is carmen!!!!carlos sauras carmen is the best .carmen needs to be a woman like maya!!!!
lilli22 4 months ago

P1J1show 11 months ago
Serious question: do ballerina's have horrible feet from those shoes and standing on their toes a lot?
georgesimmons61 11 months ago
Too thin? Helpless?? Look how she is working right down to her toes. And in the later clips she is working that policeman wonderfully. It isnt all appearance or technique....its a lot of acting as well.

fragolina88dolce 1 year ago
don't get me wrong, svetlana zakharova is breath taking and beautiful... but in some ways, i feel like she's almost TOO pretty and TOO light and graceful to be Carmen. i feel as though carmen needs to be "heavier" and more down, and earthy. i don't know how to explain it... like carmen should have the personality of a wild horse, and svetlana is just a fairy...
NinjaTree6 1 year ago 5
Her feet are absolutely breath taking
emmyhanke 1 year ago
Sorry to all Zvetlana's admirors, but in Carmen she is absolutely untasty, bland and anonymous....she just disappears in confront of Lady Maya Plissetskaya!
