This song brings me back to like my sixth and seventh grade years in school i used to listen to this album EVERY day along with Relient K lol good times
@Slide2671 As I understand this song, it's about trials and tribulations. When we go through the hardest of time's all we see is shadows, it's hard to see the sunshine... We sometimes even believe that God has forsaken us and we may even run away scared because of the trial.
But we must not lose heart because the "Shadow Proves the Sunshine". The presence of pain and tribulations PROVES that there exists Joy and Peace because without the latter two we wouldn't know what the former two are.
@theguardian170 actually, you should stop trying to say what this song means...its about...WHATEVER THE LYRICS SAY OF COURSE!!!! its about by the shadow simply being it proves sunshine. there is no shadow without sunshine. so...The Shadow Proves The Sunshine.
I liked their songs like Oh! Gravity and Lonely Nation because I liked the harder rock. I expected the same from the rest of their songs and was disapointed. This is actually a good song though, just not that other style.
@Fancysymbol Well, they ARE alternative rock. Personally thats my favorite kind. Sometimes I like the softer ones (Hello Hurricane), and sometimes Im in the mood for a really powerful rock song (Mess of Me)
This is one of my favorite Switchfoot songs just because of the lines that say 'We are crooked souls trying to stay up straight, dry eyes in the pouring rain While the shadow proves the sunshine'. its just amazing! And true! If we feel like we are in the shadows we know the sun must be near by for the shadow to have been made!!!<333333333333 Jon Foreman and all of Switchfoot is just fantastic
@validation77 They had a DVD about their tour, etc and when they recorded this song.. they taped him doing so. I wouldn't just say that because I thought this is what he did...
@validation77 I think she means he sang inside a piano, as in singing inside the top opening of the piano's body, with a mic placed with him, using the natural reverb of the vibrato piano's strings to achieve an echo effect. That's possible to work.
one of my all time favorite albums by any band.

@JonSteingardSupprter while your statement is true, this song has more a far more deeper meaning than that.

nothing is sound... Switchfoot has no sound. they make every song an individual work of art, and make it the best it can be.

When he was recording this, Jon laid under a piano and sang up into it for the cool echo effect. Pretty nifteh.
I love this song. <3

@lydiastevensart i'm skeptical. i'm pretty sure you don't have to lay under a piano to get an echo effect in a high quality recording sudio
