  • We need those moments brought back.. I don't think people realize what's been lost, taken away even. Its sad.

  • can you even imagine a show like this, now, with 2 new singer-songwriters performing almost flawlessly, song after timeless song? shame, i can't.

  • James ..oh James where have all the years gone ?...thanks for all the wonderful tune since ....helped me through so much ...your music was always there .close by and for that i am gratful

  • man that's one of his best performance and i say this for james and taylor

  • amazing.... <3

  • well i see neal not the outher bue i give much to the couse pleas i dont meaan nouthing neg ty pice tyo the day we lived

  • I like his company, he just feels present while singing, all fits, his voice, the tune, the rhythm, that little joke or whatever that gets everyone laughing, and then the essence of the song, that simply makes you wonder...

  • How good is this!! 2 ace performances.

  • JT was my hero when I was 16. A fine guitar player, as always underrated when the playing is subordinated to the songwriting and not some overstated Yngwi Malmsteen shred flash crap. James overuses the tag hammer-on but his progressions are great, and highly original.

He still brings back that melancholy feeling

  • This is my favourite type of music and in my 20s....anyone else love Neil and James? The music never gets old.

  • this is year 2011, and I am still in love with these two great musicians...no singer/songwriter of today can hold a candle to these two!

  • I've tried to get enthused about the newer crop of 'singer-songwriters', but these guys set the bar so high that Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews and the like just aren't going to come close. Fortunately for them, though, there are plenty of young listeners who are still clueless about the towering heights scaled by their predecessors ..... Musical mediocrity can be well rewarded in this day and age.

  • i just love james taylor ..what a wonderful songwriter and singer .....love you james forever :))))))

  • BEAUTIFUL.COOL AND SO DOGGONE.....JUST DOGGONE BRILLIANT

  • 1970 - 1976 Thanks

  • Crazy he was 22 or 23 here. Such a young man with such experience and I think maturity.

  • LovelyJT.

  • Just love these two and a beautiful capture of their youth.

  • It's funny to hear Neil in 1971 saying he's getting old, haha. but he hasn't lost a thing.

  • James, you are still as good looking as ever.

  • I had the pleasure to see James Taylor in concert at Massey Hall in Toronto in the early 70s. Carole King was his opening act and did backup vocals to James. It goes down in my memory as the best concert I ever attended.

I saw him a couple of years later in an open air concert at Varsity Stadium in Toronto. Linda Ronstadt opened, followed by the Eagles and then two hours of James Taylor. Oh for the good old days!!

  • Dedicated to my twin brother J.B. who passed away a month before our birthday.

  • I dedicate to my brother Ken who passed away from alcoholism. He was a great geologist.

  • Thay are my fave oldies!! Love you guys. Especially james, you are amazing what lovley songs you have :)

  • Saw him 1973 at Kent State second row.

  • I wonder if the people in the audience understood just how lucky they were to be present at this unbelievealbe event? I wonder still if the James Taylor and Neil Young knew just how legendary they would both become?

  • all hail the great BBC! you think they could get a mic that didn't clip the signal. Great job!

  • Awesome wish I could of been at that show!:)

  • I'm with you 916marine!!!!!!

  • this is absolute gold

  • There are a few singer songwriters around. Pete Doherty is one. Different era, same genre.

  • @doobiescoo1 oh please............

  • MOST ENJOYED.......(:

  • Beautiful... haunting....

  • 916marine: Thanks I'm on board

  • he sounds like me!!!

  • @julabaw you must be a smooth sounding motherfucker.

  • @wildcomfort88 enviousness could lead you to fuck your own mother

  • @julabaw that wasnt envy. that was gratitude with a bit of ol' negro slang chucked in for 'bad' taste.

  • @wildcomfort88 gratitude??? thnx i'll pray for u'r grilled ol'negro soul...

  • MAN! OMG where did you find this...Cool thanks-God Bless for posting! it's a classic piece of footage! Yea buddy! BRING BACK singer/song writers! Where has the talent gone?????

  • this guy is a treasure... a heart of gold

  • James Taylor was Apple Records first signing. He was present in the studio when the Beatles recorded "Abbey Road"

    His pedigree is unmatched.

And check out the lack of fan reaction at the beginning listening to this "brand new" song.

  • See what happens when you are young, make your own decisions in

life, be a leader... not a follower!! 40 years later these boys are still rockin!!!

  • Neil is much greater

  • @cabraomi24 music isn't a competition.

  • @Skipissatan your so right.

  • @Skipissatan your so right. :)

  • 2 ex-druggies who managed to write amazing songs! Love both of these guys I miss this kind of talent. There's hope for our generation, but it's getting slim. Vedder's the closest we got to these guys.

  • James Taylor is the most badass motherfucker on the planet!!! He could beat some punks DOWN back in the day, gangster as fuck!!!

  • @fashioncorpse You're completely off yer nut, ain"t you matey.. ' D

  • a time when stars knew what MUSIC was and wrote and played it themselves no technology to fake it. Stars that had no ego and worked together as friends when not competing in a good, friendly way to be the best songwriters and musicians

  • great! love it!

  • james taylor is incredible. songs are so great!

  • J.T. in his prime. Forget his new soft soul stuff ..this is James at his best. One guitar,..one voice...and another of his best compositions. Neil Young, too..(This is the Golden Era for the acoustic guitar playin' songwriters). Are these performances available on DVD ?.They certainly should be !! Todays singer/songwriters Watch / Listen / Learn,..( this is how its done ).

  • @royrhodes Yeah bro' :AGREE ALL the WAY!!!!!They don't cut 'Levi's' like they used too!!!!!Unfortunately -or perhap that's the 'BEAUTY'...it's all a 'Journey through the Past'!!!Creashonrebel@yahoo.com

  • @royrhodes Look up the Time Life Singer/Songwriter Collection :)

  • Vansinnigt bra!

  • tune in after 5 minutes

  • timeless

  • This song is so incredibly sad.

  • Kinda wondered why Neil didn't have the proper harp picked out already while he was back-stage, but who am I to question genius ? ; )..They say Einstein couldn't remember where he put his shoes ; )

  • @barneygoogled

This is from a BBC special where he played several songs and had different harmonicas in different keys on him for different songs.

  • @BarstoolBlues33Love the BBC.. Johnny Cash was way ahead of his time too with some of the greats he had on his show, Joni Mitchell et al...thanks.

  • beautiful. Come have a listen to Quist on our channel

  • Here are some b&w photos I shot of JT in Los Angeles in 1971. Google “cacheagency”, then click on “Photographers and Collections” and click on Jeff Allen (the photographers are in alphabetical order). Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on page 4 to see my JT photos. I also have some shots of Neil Young with Crosby, Stills & Nash in my collection that I shot in 1969. Click on any picture to enlarge it. Hope y’all enjoy!

  • JT probably didn't think back then in 1970 that he's be playing Fire and Rain for forty years plus. When you go back and watch the old videos of the musicians of the generation before Taylor and Young. you see real musicianship and talent. And we got stuck with these rinky dink dopeheads and for forty years plus!

  • Look at all that hair. The BBC recordings are a great a contribution to anyone who enjoys music.

  • wow wow wow i think james taylor is incredible! And i try to play my guitar like his around the campfire, but i must usually wait for everyone to get really drunk before doing this :)

  • This is a hardore rap and hiphop fan saying "Respect James Taylor, for he seen sunny days that could never end" XD

  • @freedomland11 I always love seeing rap and hiphop fans on sites like these. I, too, am a fan of rap and hip hop, along with rock, folk, bluegrass, and reggae, among other genres. But it seems like a lot of people who listen to rap/hip hop are afraid to admit they like different types of music. The reality is there is great music of all types, and it's not good to have to deny ourselves the pleasure of experiencing them all.

  • @headstock48 Glad you wrote that. Being raised in the Bronx, NY..I have friends who are obviously hardcore hiphop enthusiast and other friends who live in Manhattan(mainly Soho/Greenwich) who are fans of all types of Genre, but it's funny how we all connect in a vast template of music. I couldn't take my friends who are from the "Ghetto" to a (Taylor) concert without dragging them along, but in some odd way, I know I can appreciate others who are fans of All types..Like you my friend =))

    -Winter

  • @freedomland11 AND you like Steinbeck? Wow, quite the well rounded guy! Righteous.

  • @headstock48 Yea, you gotta love Steinbeck!! I'm impressed you his work, usually ppl have his name on there tip of there tongues. So Considering you like Hiphop what artist do u like "headstock48"? Love that name

  • @freedomland11 I'm a high school English teacher so I've taught Of Mice and Men. Never East of Eden though. I am out of touch with who is making rap these days. I do like Ludacris (sp?), Marshall Mathers, some Grandmaster Flash, Little Kim, Missy Eliot, NWA are some. I play the guitar and am 48 years old, hence the name.

  • @headstock48 I'm still in Highschool, but those books aren't from the teachers notes. There from my own "Take action" my daily routine in life..I guess being interested in the art portion of life, I appreciate those types of things.(Hence Taylor and Young) Go on the u-tube search bar and type in "Common Market- Escaping Arkham" I try to steer away from Radio so called Hip/hop and go for the conventional route..Knowing what hiphop truley means. I could get into that, but it would be pages long!

  • @freedomland11 I was going to ask you who you listen to, as far as Rap/Hip Hop. Do you listen to artists who are not in the mainstream? When I teach my poetry units, I include excellent traditional poetry, but always music and lyrics. It might be Neil Young, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder, Sweet Honey in the Rock. The kids like it pretty well.

  • @headstock48 I personally Do listen to artist who aren't in the mainstream. I can't remember the last time I actually tuned into the radio. I like a little bit of Jazz. Some Pat Metheny or Bird..ect, something to relax without any lyrics!! Lauryn Hill is amazing, but show your kids "Saul Williams" a terrific motivational poetry guy who changed my whole thinking of it. I write hip/hop poetry mostly as one of my hobbies. I have no idea who are "Sweet honey in the rock" LOL, but they sound tasty!

  • @freedomland11 I just watched the Common Market video. Catchy. I'd have to listen to the lyrics more closely to really appreciate it, though. Love good songwriting. Dude, Sweet Honey in the Rock is a great A Cappella group. They have some excellent, powerful stuff. Hard to describe what genre. Their music is usually much more melodic, but they're singing in this weird key because of the subject of the song. Type in Youtube: Sweet Honey in the Rock NPR. Name of song is "Stranger".

  • @headstock48 I'm a rapper and an acoustic artist people shouldn't stick themselves to one genre...how can you come up with anything new and innovative if you do

  • anthemic

  • ive been in my mind, its such a fine line ,that keeps me searching for a heart of gold. the older you grow the finer the line becomes.

  • @jakeimp When your in your mind you can't be in your heart, I guess its a safe place for a little while anyway.

  • what IS that shrill at 6:08??? spit in his harmonica?

  • How bloody brilliant is this !!! This boy James Taylor just might have a chance on X-factor ! :-) Loving the "Unplugged" feel to this without the cellos. Then we have the remarkable 'hippy' that is Neil Young being very amusing before singing his 'new' song 'Heart Of Gold'. 7 minutes and 57 seconds of pure class. All rather neatly spliced together in the middle with the applause. Well done to everyone involved. Pax to all from 'SoulBoy'Smith.Xxx.

  • @Mr1973ian: you're 100% about "7 minutes and 57 seconds of pure class.", but James Taylor never woulda darkened X-factor's door!!!

  • @bollix13 Yes you're quite right there buddy. Pax to all from 'SoulBoy'Smith.Xxx.

  • Aah, yes, love these two & best "Fire& Rain" I've ever heard, but I always like unplgd better

  • Why would 5 people dislike this? Nevermind.........they NEED their own reality show.

  • Classic Unplugged James Taylor and Neil Young on a musical journey thru the 60s.

    May they stay 'Forever Young'

  • watching and listening to these videos take me back to some of the sweetest times. james taylor and neil young sang straight from their hearts and we felt it then; yet the feeling is even bigger now. thank you for bringing back that great emotion.

  • It was a dangerous, creative time, some survived and some didn't

  • Music made from that place in ourselves only WE ourselves can imagine

  • It's just pure brilliance when James Taylor plays and sings. Makes the world a better place.

  • This is an amazing song....and it is your soul and your heart that project out through your voice....

  • 1970? This was masterfull for 1970. Many should have followed J.T....sad....

  • i have to agree...thanks.

  • NIce... Thanks and God bless...

  • Surfing with Phillip Graytak, not Blue Nail, but Graytak and the Brothers of Eternal Light in Mexico. Neil played this song. It was the first time I had heard it, but I could never forget it.

Good friends are so hard to come by. Neil, you know Zimmerman adores you. Call him! I sent him all my wadded up pieces of paper that you loved to go through. Life moved by so fast, so give me a key of e and I will be happy.

  • OMG!!! thanks so much for the post!!! I was 10-11yrs old.. at the time..and it still means as much to me today nearing 50. thanks

  • two absolute legends and they havent finished yet, thanks to everyone who put these vids on. brilliant.

  • For my sister Allison who I miss more each day.

  • Two great artists!

  • two great artists of the '70s. still serenading the world. sing on

  • In my opinion, the two best singer/songwriters of ALL time. Although Bob Dylan is also amazing I think both Young and Taylor top the list by FAR.

  • @sergeantfan Let's add Steve Stills to this list too.

  • A singer songwriter in his prime

  • Can't believe this is 40 - YES 40 years ago !

He still sounds as good today - if you are not sure - go see him live - truly one of the most underrated artistes of all time !!!

  • @kellytotallysharpay You don't know what being underrated is. This man has reached critical acclaim.

  • wheeww timeless piece! i born in 1975..but i still choose thier generations!song that sooths to your soul...

  • ho la pelle d'oca !!!!!!!!!!

  • The music industry had higher standards in the time of these gentlemen. The sheer quality of the songwriting here is staggering compared to modern pop music.

  • Almost as good as the old boy that sang this as Arifjan, balls deep in a case of NA Becks

  • ain't got nothing on that old trucker at afrifjan balls dep in a case of Becks

  • Song written for a girl who died while institutionalized with Taylor. He was there to recover from drug addiction. His recovery was complete. Carly Simon liked to suggest he had a relapse, and it drove her to end the marriage. Not true. She was

having an affair with a punk rocker in her band.

  • a hauntingly beautiful song.

  • I close my eyes and for just a moment everything seems like it's gonna be alright.

  • In both cases, 1 man 1 guitar (maybe a little harmonica) producing beautiful, timeless and awe inspiring music. No wonder the young generation are so tense and nasty today, they have never experienced music like this which makes you a better, happier person.

  • All right, that's it, this music is just way too good...I'm bringing the singer/songwriter era back...WHO'S WITH ME?!

  • @916marine I!!!

  • @916marine I am !!

  • @916marine If only it were that easy, theses guys made it the long way and the hard way, they rose to the top. This era can not be duplicated and I'm OK with that. We own it and that's all right by me.

Today's talent if you can even call it that is manufactured for a certain look. Few write their own lyrics and even fewer are musicians.

  • @916marine ME..

  • @916marine im with you! it is so inspierational!

  • @916marine I'm with you bro!!! My set list consists of James Taylor, Jim Croce, Neil Young, Harry Chapin

  • @916marine crosby stills and nash, neil young, bob dylan, john lennon, paul mccartney, cat stevens, billy joel, lou reed, the amount of singer sonwriters back then was incredible

  • My poor kids had to listen to so much of my music when they were growing up, they actually like it now...kinda like making them eat their carrots, lol.

  • Jt and Neil they don't come any better than these two. they are as talented today as they were 40 years ago. no special effects or tweaking to make the music sound the way it does today, just them, their instruments, beautiful voices and the great lyrics they wrote!!

I have loved these two all of my life, and every time i see them in concert, i leave feeling like i have just been in the presence of real genius!!

  • Thank you for posting these together, 45RPMs...I had them in my faves until they were yanked! Fingers crossed this time...cheers!

  • im 16 and he is one of my favrets i hate new music it sucks

  • Comment removed

  • What a voice! Loved him back in the 70s love him still. Try to impress on my kids my music....in turn I love their Pearl Jam & Staind! :)

  • Neil young is my all time favourite along with James Taylor and Carole King.

    True talented people!

  • Neil young is my all time favourite along with James Taylor and Carole King.

    True talented people!

  • I always thought it was cool that Paul McCartney discovered JT. When JT sent in a demo to Paul after the Beatles started Apple. Love James but I like Neil better.

  • Anyone in the business today should be studying these guys but this isn't stuff you can "learn" because it's coming from their souls...and that's the reason it's stood the test of time...if people are still listening to it 40 yrs later that's the mark of greatness right there....the work will live on long after their gone........

  • Very fine words, and so true.

  • @harhar58 This is the absolete truth that you have written - I am 64 and lived through all these beautiful years - the like of which future generations since will regretably might never experience such.

"Shower The People" is as good as any Church Hymn

  • So different than today, not in it for fortune & fame, just doing what was in their heart...as Ray Charles said if you can sing what's in your heart and keep time...you've got it.........

  • So pure. Both of them. :)

  • love it ! thankyou two of the greatest together !

  • What magic! Taylor, Heroin and 1970........

  • JT on heroin.

  • James Taylor and Neil Young,,,!!! yeahh!!!

  • long live Neil, your songs never ever grow ing old

  • nirvana stole taylor's act , man. taylor so cool

  • Great lesson for today's gifted artists.. Hopefully the public allows them to once turn back to another age of music as it should be!

  • Completely sweet and double neat thankyou

  • That was Awesome! Thank you both! xx

  • Yeah!

    My boys.

  • Two legends in one video!!! :-) PURRRFECT!!!

  • neil youngs best song in my opinion im add this to my favorites thanks a million for posting this video

  • james taylor is fuckin kool

  • James Taylor, Neal Young, together awesome. I so love both of this songs

alota. I always thought I would see you one more time again, keep on searching for a heart of gold, and I am getting old,Love the way James Taylor plays the guiter, and I love the way Neal Young plays the hermonica. Smile & Peace

  • I've been watching a lot of Neil Young footage from years ago also, and what amazes me about NY (besides that beautiful clean head of hair LOL) is with what extreme confidence AND CONCISE PRECISION he performed at such a young age. Both he and James Taylor... such great confidence and flawless execution!

  • I have loved this song since I was a little girl. We were singing at work one day, and someone much younger said, "Oh, that song is beautiful. I've never heard it before. Who sings that?" I said, "My dear, welcome to the sweet world of James Taylor."

  • @MusicalContessa You know, that, on the actual studio recording of this masterpiece, the two backup singers were, as follows: James Taylor and Linda Ronstandt. You are a great lady for posting about this.

  • Why thank you! (~.~). I'm going to learn it on guitar and I hope my voice will do it justice. James Taylor is such an extraordinary talent and truly plays through the heart. You just have good taste!

  • As for Ms. Linda Ronstadt... WAY ahead of music time... should make many out there "sit up and take notes!"... what a musician...WHAT A VOICE!

  • I own all of JT's songs in one format or another, but there is nothing as nice as looking back at a time that brings back so many wonderful memories , and I can with this song....and to have NY playing Heart of Gold on the same Vid is giving me all my Xmas's at one time! :-)

  • Nice combo. I wonder what god would say. Thanks for James, Thanks for Neil.

  • James Taylor and Karen Carpenter were the best voices of the 70s,

  • I'd have to say they were amazing, but idk if they were..."the best"

  • well i guess there is no such thing as, "the best" seeing that everybody has different tastes when it comes to music. I would say that they are my personal favorite.

  • true.

  • Regarding crediting Carole King, please keep in mind that in the 70's everyone played everyone's songs if they liked them. Check out Carole's wikipedia page and read her list of major hits. I think this really confuses a lot of modern fans. That being said; King should be credited not only as a great songwriter but an oustanding piano player and vocalist.

  • It's frustrating to know that Neil Young is capable of such good-sounding songs as this one and now puts out ones that are, shall I say...not. You're still a musician and poet, Neil.

  • I was in high school when he did this; James gave us the song "You've Got a Friend" which everybody loved and needed at that time (and now), which we adopted for our high school theme song. My generation was rich, is rich, with musical talent and love.

  • I love these two. I guess I'm getting "kind of old"!!!!!

  • Wow that's a lot of talent! two of the very best singer songwriters ever.

  • ummmmm NICE! I guess

  • I love this guy, thank God my father showed me this when I was young, stuck loving it ever since :)
