  • I love both systems. I am however, slightly more inclined to the Mega Drive (that's what the Genesis is called over here). more because I grew up playing the system and I think that gives me the soft spot! :)

  • The music to this game NEVER gets old!!! :D

  • SEGA vs Nintendo.. Ahh the Golden Age of videogames! And somewhere in between legendary hardcore underground stuff like PC Engine...

  • Says what you want guy but this game had no chances to exist on super nes....

or yes.... but with 20 frames /seconds !

    Thunderforce 4 rocks !

  • @alcor44

does a snes actually support paralax? or is it so limited that it isn't even relevant.this what we see here is pretty sick.2 background layers scrolling of set sprite scrolling in between, there is so much going on.

  • @aryinc The SNES supported up to four layers of parallax scrolling. The Genesis really only supports one layer but there are ways around that.

  • @sadeviant

okay in wich games?.i love snes and megadrive, but i prefer megadrive for doing sness alike things only wihout any chip in's etc+genesis is a allot faster.the thing i really like about snes is the colours when correct work done with like in those pre renderd games like ki or donkey kong.

  • @aryinc Which SNES games? The first one that comes to mind is Super Metroid. Jurassic Park 2 had some pretty good parallax scrolling as well, if memory serves.

Honestly it's not something that matters a ton. Technically the TurboGrafx-16 didn't support parallax scrolling at all but a number of games (Lords of Thunder) had amazing multi-layered backgrounds. I believe it was mostly done with sprite layer trickery.

  • @sadeviant

yeah pretty good but diffrent from the genesis, super metriod had like 2 or 3 layers.this here looks like a ton of layers between the back and foreground layer, this looks better to me parallax wise.don't get me wrong sness still kicks ass and lord of thunder is insane only tg16/cd doesn't fully match the snes+sega genssis, duh it's an 8bit system.

  • @aryinc Well like I said - there's a lot of sprite layer trickery that can be done on any of the three systems. Also that "8 bit" system still displays more on-screen colors than the Genesis. :)

  • @sadeviant

yeah but not the graphics of batman and robin on sgea genesis.i've seen really impressive thing on pc engine tg16 but a majority of games more colours or not don't have it going aggainst the sega.comix zone ristar batman and robin, games with low colour rate that look like a rainbow.snes is nothing shot from awesome only nintendo sucked for they're censoring stuff on snes,a defnite win for sega @that time.

  • @aryinc Compare the graphics in Raiden on the PC Engine and Genesis. Compare Lords of Thunder especially. The PC Engine could easily produce as much detail and with any direct comparison the lack of color really shows on the Genesis. It may have had "only" and 8 bit CPU but that didn't seem to hobble it.

You also forget Nintendo mysteriously softened their censorship stance when they figured out there was a lot more money to be made around the time Mortal Kombat II was being ported.

  • @sadeviant

i know.but man wolfenstein 3d mk1 etc it's a bitter pill still love the damn thing really much.oc engine is awesome 2 esspecialy those shooter but 'for comparising.Strder genesis vs tg16 genesis wins, devils crush defnitly genesis.there aren't many port's from pc engine and genesis but i know genesis got the sweater overall deal of both comix zone sonic vectorman ewj etc need i say more '''variety''snes also was great.

  • @sadeviant

Btw how worse is that colour lack on the genesis actually? i find early to late games good to great looking even their arcade version did well wth lesser colours and what actually is a colour limit @release.nggp 16bit colour limit compared to other 16bitter still great thing, nes has a colour limit compared to tg16 gg and mastersystem, the colour limit thing has nothing to do with the graphical impressivness of a game.it's like a bitch fit.

  • @aryinc It's pretty noticeable. I can tell that nothing is going to sway you from GENESIS IS TEH GREATEST ZOMG so I'll not bother. :)

  • @sadeviant

sorry that it's not the snes.my faforite is the nes, then comes genesis it's an uderated and hated system while it did many things good people don't wan't to see or admit the class of the system and bulch their snes story's over it.yeah i know RPG's and mario zoo etc(boring). And if the snes isn't the point they grab the old tg16/cd and thorw in a colour story,in the end of the day genesis eats the the tg16/cd,sapphire didn't look that great. neo geo aes eats em all.it's all personal.

  • Who really gives a shit? Both systems had great games and neither was like the other. I do wish Sega were still making consoles so that Nintendo fanboys would at least be beat up once in awhile by Sega fanboys.

  • @flumpis I would rather play a Megadrive over a Wii any day. Megadrive has much better games, and lets face it, the Wii's graphics are not that much better!!

  • The SNES used watered down samples due to cartrige space. CPU Instructions fo YM FM take much less space than crappy sound samples.

the only limit was the creativity of Genesis/MegaDrive developers

  • Actually it's the other way around. The SNES allowed for much more creativity with a variety of sound types, as opposed to the one-trick FM synth. Sega fans will find any way to put a spin though on SNES's superior graphics and sound capabilities.

  • @melvoin Its more creative to use sounds made by someone else rather than program your own?

  • Are you kidding? The SNES sounds million times better!!! The Soudns weare compressed, but the quality is really great. This FM Type music is just boring. sounds always the same, you can't add new instruments, I mean, play a cheap keyboard of the 80'es and it sounds like a genesis.

  • @RodsUFOHateClub are u kidding why does the Genesis have the best music with games like MUSHA

    and TF3

    Snes has faggy RPG music

  • @RenegadeFury oh shut your sega troll ass up. both had great sound chips and IT really depended on the developers to make them work right, like R type III on the snes and this game on the mega drive.

  • @RodsUFOHateClub The whole point of FM is program any instrument. With samples you just toss in some sound someone else made.

  • GIANT WALLS OF TEXT

  • the heydays are like, consoles that didn't follow a trend and experimented with fell out and get crapped, nontheless the quality.then it was like now,i seriously don't give a damn what they say about the graphics for the wii,yet to see a brighter game then smg on a ps3/360,i rather play wii then 360 due it,s retro value and gameplay starts gettin better, house of dead ok plays godly.

  • when you really want to throw in colours or graphics for the matter and pick DK country then i give you some of the same with more then 100 colours in screen named vectorman, the+ vectorman has over DK is evrything that is digitized moves as flued as possible to make the amount of colours stun you instead like good highlighting in everylevel flued transformations instead of conting 100K of colours in a monaco gp picture or true lies, cause i refer dkc as just a mere moving photo.

  • the thing is the genesis 1st is older but the 1st 16 bit console 2nd developers saw the fun of devloping for the system and see it work out great even with lack of colour 3rd the music is been proven really good and diverse 4th sega=lightyears ahead 5th developers prove that colours dont mean anything but a moving picture does more then lets say DK country,6th nintendo is just to simple for such a company as sega 7th sega even proved better withouth chip in power, and more reasong are there.

  • looks better than GBA

  • hell GG looks better then gba at times.

  • any tf game makes the snes cry for it man hear the diffrence between tf spirits for snes and tf 3,the snes version of tf 3 is a far cry sound wise.

  • This game would have made the SNES cry itself to sleep. It pushed the Genesis/mega drive to the limit with the parallax scrolling and sprites on screen. It was another game that showed that the genesis could produce great music.

  • the thing is the genesis had slick and modern model desing even for its time and the snes is just fat and lazy, the genesis kept evrything you could possibly see in screen moving lets say this game for example looks even better then the ugly chunks of polygons or textured mess in some gba games, the snes lets nothing move with the snes youre staring at a cold picure just standing stiff while some stuff animates and DK country says the worse only colour show nothing more.

  • The SNES has great visuals and color, but looks aren't everything.

I found that it actually has more slowdown, too.

And as for the sound chip, that's purely opinion. Most critics trash the Genesis' sound as being too "tinny" or "noisy", but I think it sounds more metallic and heavy

Compare the Genesis and SNES versions of Thunder Force 3, for example

The SNES cannot replicate the awesome tunes found on the Genesis version.

  • yeah i actually dont know why many crtitsize the genesis it,s sound, cause it,s made by sythesis and not crappy rate midis with low filter option due space like some snes games, for instance snes just can't do better guitar then genesis it just cant max carnage no that game has the sound of a high gain keyboard while tf is that close to real distorded guitar same for comix zone and skitching, snes could never get that heavy or groovy as sor, impossible to get those best out of snes.

  • Exactly

  • Skitchin' especially was known for using the YM and DMC in perfect harmony.

One would probably also like to mention the music found in Streets of Rage, and it being known for possibly having some of the best YM synth tracks ever produced.

  • without crap, genesis was straight forward arcade duplication, and yes it had everything in it in 1989 that no other console had,and some good developers enjoyed more of their time with a genesis or sega for the matter, because they challenged you and you got everything arcade perfect except the colours, final fight cd is good example.

  • Don't forget the sweet slap bass.

  • no indeed,i still got the pc engine hype fresh in my brain.kids would say it was earlier and way better so i go well show me erm yeah yeah sapphire but i couldn't affort that game,so they cam with bonks or thesnk fighters wich where good on nec.but hey streets of rage batman and robin rocket knight andventure and so on did a graphically and musically better job then anything on pc engine.

  • de[ends on how you work with it,yes genesis had thinny guitar sounds at times but technosoft layered those thinny samples and combined them to make them sound so heavy, they evaded the dac channel couse offcourse can dump samples in it but you have to deal with filtering and quality loss and memory space.

  • Funny that he overclocks his system for a game that NEEDS slowdown in order to be played. It's too hard otherwise!

  • i love this game, the music in it are very beautiful

  • This is a good game, but did anyone else but me actually like Thunderforce III better?

  • TF3 BGM is Legendary! ^^

  • It's a pity it was pretty much all downhill from there.

That was the best stage in any Thunderforce game, but the rest of it just wasn't that great.

  • Incorrect.

The level of detail in the level remains quite high throughout.

Each level has a distinct theme.

I htink level 9 in the only one that feels kinda meh,but even that is detailed as fuck

  • One of the best games on the megadrive ever. All aspects of it rule. Hard as nails too. I have the original game, manual in good nick too, got it for £5.00 of my bros mate....Sweet.

Played it to death and still do today lol.

  • God I loved everything about this game; graphics, levels, gameplay, and especially the soundtrack. Happy days!

  • The best shoot ever! =)

  • First time I saw this level running on my Genesis, I nearly crapped myself. And that was after being blown away by the intro & music. Games like this are the reason why 16-bit will always be king.

  • Music is one of the best on the genesis. Considering snes had much more superior sound quality over genesis cause of the sony dsp sound chip. But I do admit there is some genesis games that comes close to snes but then again not quite, I am talking about overall sound quality. Example listen to the spc files of super turrican or actraiser, final fantasy IV,etc, and listen to genesis of mega turrican, light and day. It dont matetr to me cause I love classic games.

  • the Megadrive(Genesis sorry) was superior when it came to strange and otherworldly sfx(TF4,anything by treasure) also distorted guitars like in this game and contra hard corps and synth sounds.but could only copy a few real instrument sounds wiht any real authenticity.Snes spc chip is a better allrounder though.but im drawn to the music because of the limitations under which it was created.I<316bit

  • I'm going to have to respectfully disagree, as the few instruments that the SNES could do that the Genesis couldn't (most string sounds in particular) really didn't sound that great to my mind.

  • hey i meant in a very minor way. I love both of those sounds chips, and i find myself going back and forth between soundtracks and being amazed. snes might be a beter allrounder, but its not better...

TBH its completely dependent on how well the music is programmed.

but my point was more about authenticity(its over-rated anyway) the snes could use samples more freely. but the megadrive was just down right interesting sounding and could make some AWESOME SFX.

  • That's true. It's hard to do both, say, voice samples AND drums at the same time on the Genesis, unless you use FM synth drums like this game did -- this game uses NO drum samples as far as I can tell!

But if you want, say, brass and stuff, you should check out, say, Shining Force and its sequel.

  • but the snes is limited due its own processor the music isnt fast paced at al and mostly real instrument sound warbly or not right because theyre chunked into slowness like guitar samples on a snes sound like the sluglyest sabbath kind of riffs it it sounds to high or barely has enough gain to prove its right, the advantage the genesis had was to harmonise channels so semi grunt guitars was a specialty of the genny and due its faster proccessing it would sound good in place also,TF 4 prove right.

  • snes didnt have high gained string stuff at al and iff the sgea genesis or developers could manage to put some awesome guitar on the genesis they just went stubborn and crammed it into its DAC skitching for example and even better can be done hear earth worm jim 2 its continue screen.its possible to hear 2 guitar like in a real band on the genesis but it would eat cartridge storage, the 32x on the other hand could do really awesome work with its extra channels.

  • play this game on the highest difficulty and youre a master. It took me about 100 tries to master it.

  • The actual genesis game looks a little chopier. This is what you would so from a Gens emulator.

  • Fabulous. Probably the best horizontal shooter of all time. The graphics were incredible for the time... so fast and intense. Really funky soundtrack too!

  • what was overclocked about this?

  • awesome video!
