  • I remember seeing this character frequently in the Archie Sonic Comics.

  • fuck me sideways...played this with my big sister back when we were kids..

    eh...i miss being like 10

  • I remember renting a sega saturn from blockbuster (Remember how you could do that!?!?) and playing this game when I was 8 years old. It's still a beautiful game, and it blew my fucking mind back then. I also rented Panzer Dragoon.

  • I distinctly remember playing this on the Dreamcast. Were you able to play Saturn games on the Dreamcast?

  • THIS IS LIKE ONE OF MY FAVORITE GAMES... N ... XDD I WAS THE BIRDIE XDD

  • that is one weirdass main character.

    HUT, HAAAAREYAAAAA!

  • Awesome game! The sega saturn is one of my favorite systems because of great games like this.

  • The Sega Saturn is to the Dreamcast what the N64 is to the Gamecube. At least in my opinion.

  • HIP HIP HAREAAAAAA

  • What a shame that I missed out on Sega Saturn...I could've gotten this game.

But, alas, my parents could only afford one console per generation, and they got us a PSX.

  • @TheDevilbuster The original Playstation was an awesome console too, don't sell it short. Games like Twisted Metal and Crash Bandicoot were amazing at the time, not to mention Starblade Alpha, Strikers 1945 and many others.

  • @RREDDWARFF I didn't mean to sell it short; I'd say my parents made an excellent choice. It's just too bad that they could only get one per generation. These days, I can more or less get any console I want (I only use emulation if I have no other choice), but it still means that I've got a LOT of catching up to do, video-game-wise. I don't even have an actual Sega console yet.

  • @TheDevilbuster You got the better console. Like the infinitely better console.

  • I know everyone here seems to love it, but to me it doesn't look that great. Too flat. I did know about it when it was new, so maybe I would have loved it back then.

  • astal in hd for xbla!!!!!!

  • Lol i remember this game X3 YA-TAAAAH!

  • Nostalgia'd so hard

  • This has got to be the most Beautiful video game I have ever played it set the stander for next gen platformes. The Graphics and Animations are carefully done the backgrounds are GorgeousThe story about the game is excellent the music is wonderful a mix of classical jazz rock and pop the gameplay is Challenging yet simple and fun. All a round a perfect 10 if u have never played this Game u need to youtube does not do it Justice Undoubtable a 2d MASTERPIECE.

  • Astal is a awesome game. One of the finest 2D games ever made for the saturn. If you love sega and own a saturn do yourself a favor and get this gem.

  • though this game looks pretty awsome, the excited screams of children is one of my least favorite sounds, which is a dealbreaker, especially if I have to hear it everytime I smash something...

  • I remember first playing this game back in the day thinking "Oh my god! How can a video game look this BEAUTIFUL?!"

  • HU-HARIAAAAA!

  • reminds me of rayman

  • @TacoBound i was about to say the exact same thing. Colorful

  • The sounds made by that thing while fighting are beyond annoying.

  • Why did that diamond say ME instead of US?

  • @DELIVEREE I mean, when he says "If you're not here to feel the burn, you have to get by me first!" at 0:58, he, NOT alone, says it right by his allies.

  • @DELIVEREE Oops! I thought he said "Feel the burn" not "Steal the bird" due to his distorted tone.

  • reminds me of the original rayman.

  • @OldmanMaestro Funny how people say Astal reminds them of Rayman when Astal was one of the original launch titles on the Saturn. Rayman came much later and was a port from the Atari Jaguar. Still, both games are great.

  • This is the kind of game the Saturn was meant for.

    The Saturn shines here.

  • man i almost forgot about this game

  • Best platformer for the Saturn. Clockwork Knight and Bug weren't bad, but they just weren't anywhere near as good as Astal if you ask me.

  • Lol my older brother and I used to love playin this game! Well.. he'd played and I'd make crazy comments about the characters while he played ... great fun :) We'd laugh for hours lol.. love this game!

  • Rayman, and zelda put together.

  • Why the hell does he sound like young zelda.

  • Man do I wish this game would be made available for download on one of the current consoles...

  • Man I loved this game as a kid. Always thought the art style was great. Didn't realize how good it was until I watched it again.

I do wish the Saturn had played more toward 2D. It 2D games so well. Ah well, that system was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

  • SEGA really needs to get back in the hardware biz..

  • Psst..Is this on a emulator? If so can you let me know how to get it :O?

  • he's fighting against fucking diamonds? oh japan

  • @tehloop

Those are gemstones or crystals, but not diamonds by far

  • @Kuikkamies

They may not be diamonds, but the tickets are.

  • @tehloop Who cares if there diamonds man."^^ Its all its all good to me. =]

  • The graphics are pretty nice, but the throwing / attack sounds are obnoxious as hell

  • HAAAAAH RYEAAAAAHH

  • that game takes me back

  • this game reminds me of rayman

  • Meh, a fine game I never got to play in my childhood. Wish they made a remake or something...

  • I just got this game a couple days ago.I am lookinfg forward to playing it when I have the chance.

  • I remember i first played this game at a blockbuster video sometimes in 95 or 96...man that was a while... I feel so old now.

  • What made the Saturn so unique and special amongst the competition was its library of awesome 2D games! They made sure that 2D adventure games such as this one were still fun as hell to play, even in an era where 3D gaming was first making its mark. Too bad Bernie Stollar was too much of a fuck up to understand this though...

  • sad thing is, bernie was sort of right... the future wasn't in 2D. as for RPG's, well he bungled that. rpg's are pretty big-time now, but 2D appeals to just a marginal audience. problem is 2D was what saturn did best, and 'ol Bernie didn't play to the system's strengths. imho of course.

  • aw man. such good times. My friends and I playing Saturn and N64. Man where have the days gone. This is a great game

  • YAATAAAA!

  • I love this game so much i have it original sealed and a backup

  • Wow...I think I'm experiencing a nostalgia high. If I start miming a Saturn controller and quoting Independence Day, It's turned into a bad trip. Call a counselor.

  • ahhh the memories i had this game back when i was around 9 or 10 thanks for posting

  • awesome game

  • Ps3 or Xbox 360 should do a re-make of dis game...i still remember the 1st time i played it and the first thing i loved abt dis game was its soundtrack

  • I STILL OWN MY COPY...HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

  • yea but your a fag

  • Wow, This brings back an impressive array of memories!

  • The visuals are amazing, but that scream the main character exudes when throwing an enemy can get annoying real fast.

  • I have seen this dude in the cover of Sonic comic's.

  • its because back in the mid 90's sega had a thing where kids could enter to make a video game main hero and the one that won was astal from some kid look it up some time good stuff from the 90's

  • Holy shit, I ALWAYS wondered who that was 0_o

  • This game has the most stunning 2D visuals I've seen.

    So underrated...

This YouTube video doesn't come close to doing it justice.

The game play is solid as well.

  • i played this when i was 5... never got passed the level in the cave with...the eye bats...? yeah.... i miss this game i would still have it if my mom didnt sell the system...i cried when she sold it.... man i miss this game

  • this game was so hard. i think i used a code for mad lives or something to reach the last boss, i never beat it though.

    and boy was Astal strong

  • looks good but the voices are annoying

  • i envy you like no other man... this is hands down my favorite game ever... EVER!!!

    T....T no fair...

  • OMG! I didn't know Astal was such a great game! I thought it was anooooooooother platform games. Too shame it was so underrated at the market.

  • damn i was like 9 when i played this

  • I have this on disc, Will any emulator play it ?

  • SSF alpha 0.1 he play every my saturn games

  • Jesus Christ I used to play this when I was like 5 it was the greatest game ever lol.

  • this game reminds me of Odin Sphere

  • Odin Sphere gameplay was kinda similar, 'cept you got a weapon! xD

  • well the sega saturn was a 2d monster, huge sprites etc and on top of it transperancies like in guardian heroes wich made many saturn games look beyond neo geo aes games, the ram card for sega sat was needed for arcade to home port due the big sizes of memory i think, cause this looks better then for instance kof 96

  • I used to play this classic at my sister's house

  • ya agreed sega Saturn has been and always will be the best game console ever!!![in my opinion:)]

  • It's a shame that this game never received a UK release. This is a very good game.

  • Yatta!

  • man i remember playing this game...sorta

i was like 5 at the time so accualy today i forgot it an i wanted to know what it was again so i typed the only thing in google i remembered

    stupid bird and sega

    and astal came up :D

i coulda sworn it was 3d but i guess i was wrong i was only 5 at the time i dont remember much back then

  • sega saturn's the best system in the world

  • because of that comment,

    I LOVE YOU!!!

  • @jackdiesal666 Not the best. Just the most under appreciated

  • I love this game and i still have it;now im in the mood 2 play it

  • This game looks beautiful, simple solid gameplay: must track it down...(Thanks for the upload)

  • I've been looking on ebay for it, it's not too pricey and it should be simple enough to find.

  • The whole throwing aspect really reminds me of Mischief Makers.

  • Dude, you never used the super breath

  • OMG THAT VOICE IS SO ANNOYING

  • the game is now considered a rarity

  • it depends on what country :D

  • The meories, i miss this game, i even liked the game more when i foud out that a 2nd player can pick up the cotroller and use the bird...

  • Man I love this game...but its funny how his action voices are japanese but when he speaks its english.

  • if you're here to steal the bird, you have to get by me first

  • When I reach The Boss After Stage 8 The Game Starts to mess up Causing Astal to Keep Saying Stop I Always Have to Restart after this. But Still This is the greatest game ever.

  • saudade

  • Oh my god...i havent played this game in 10 years...still looks as good as i remember it

i wish i still had my saturn T-T

  • why do we have to stand Nintendo stupid control pads and bad quality games now?

  • dude i loved this game, thanks for the upload, brings back memeories

  • Man I used to love this game. I miss the 90's!

  • EEF YOUR HEER TO STEEEL DA BIIIRD, you have to get by MEEEE FIRRRRRRST!!

  • WOW, i remember this game like yesterday. since 1996 in the 5th grade :)

  • I'm a saturn fan, never played this game, the graphics are suberb!, but the girl's voice is soooooo annoying!, thats the only, but big downside.

  • its the same voice actress as the one who worked on Brave Fencer Musashi, among others.

  • Mushashi wah?

  • Musashi was an awesome game.

  • That is none other than Lani Minella, the same voice actress who provided the Original voice of Rouge the Bat and OmoChao before the 4kids Invasion!

  • reminds me of rayman

  • ye i was thinking tha

  • Looking sweet, thanks for uploading.

  • I LOVED THIS GAME SO MUCH.

As a 7 year old in the year 1996 or whatever, this couldn't be beat!!!

  • They have to remake it for the DS :D

  • i loved this game

  • Anyone loving the musics of Astal, you can download them in:

    ultrace dot com/uost/astal/

  • Wow...ingame english voice acting is actually good. Considering Sega's track record...or was that capcom? Oh well both do some ugly voice work in english.

  • Astal didn't get succes because of the SEGA 32X and SEGA CD (Useless)and the price of Saturn (400$) and SEGA didn't asist at the 3D graphism generation. It's Too Bad. I Love the Musics and the 2D graphism are beautiful, but if it was in 3D graphism this game could have work.

  • Wow, I didn't realize anyone but me still cared about this game. Someone should post a vid of the battle with Geist.

  • Yea this game was awesome, I don't see anything wrong with it being simple, it's what was really attractive to me

  • I think this game wasn't great for being too simple, but the music and graphisms and intoductions and cut scenes are great, too bad the game isn't worth, SEGA you should have made better for Saturn.

  • this is one of thegames i always bring with my arguement about 2d over 3d platformers

  • Anyone who claims that 3d platformers are better than 2d platformers (and vice versa) is a retarded ¬_¬

Plus, if anything, this game proves that 3d is BETTER, since Astal features extremely linear and short stages.

  • You realize you called yourself a retard right?

  • Someone need to learn how to read. I said that IF every 2d game was like Astal, then 3d would be definitely better.

  • No...you did not say that. the comment is still there...look at it. You said "Anyone who claims that 3d platformers are better than 2d platformers (and vice versa) is a retarded ¬_¬

Plus, if anything, this game proves that 3d is BETTER, since Astal features extremely linear and short stages. "

If you realy need me to break down how you called yourself a retard i can do that for you. But it would only show how retarded you are. And i would highly recomend you learn proper english first.

  • lol

First, I was originally replying to kong24, who stated that he uses Astal as a example of 2d being superior to 3d.

Second, if someone proved that he is a retarded, it was you, seeing how you can't read. I said that if this game was used as proof of anything it would be that 3d > 2d, since this game is shows common shortcomings in 2d platformers. I did NOT say that every 2d platformer is like Astal.

  • (continuation)

Let me phrase it in words that (hopefully) even you can understand: if this game was a example of 2d platformers in general (like kong24 said it is), then 2d would be undeniably inferior. The thing is, I NEVER said that it's a good example of 2d platformers in general. Again, it was kong24 the one who said it.

And third, I don't give a shit about my English. Maybe I would if it was my main language, which it isn't.

  • What a 2D marvel.

  • "Get away from me you stupid bird, quit following me!"

    HAHAHAHAHHA hilarious

  • "get away from me you stupid bird, quit following me!"

    HAHAHAHHAH

  • very pretty graphics! i bought this game off of ebay after viewing this video, haha.

  • i think they should do something with sega again like make something like the playstation did like should be like sega something and really good graphics i think they should do that, i think it would go far

  • sega saturn was one of the best systems i think to ever come out, and i am pretty the first system to ever be able to go online

  • yeah I agree! it's unfortunate that it didn't do very well here in the US, I mean not as good as the psx that came out at the same time. The majority of my games are japanese imports, it did much better there than here!

  • Actually, the original Famicom (Japanese NES) had online gaming via-dial up, but it never really caught on. Also, the Super Famicom (Japanese SNES) had a satellite gaming attachment called the Satellaview. And I think this was after the Saturn had online, but the Japanese N64 Disk Drive attachment for N64 had web browsing and e-mail.

  • That was the Dreamcast.

  • You are all wrong, google image Gameline, it was a On-line service for the Atari VCS. SEGA was however, the first first party company to provide a On-line service and they are unarguably the biggest innovators in the department of On-line multi-player networks.

  • While not the first to go online, the Sega Genesis was the first video game system to offer online playing. And it even gave the capability to download Genesis games (including game created specifically to be downloaded).

  • Wasnt the bird leeda? and i wonder why no one uploaded the anime video you unluck after you beat the game. If you dont press start.

  • Astral was so mean to that bird. I hated when it was captured by foes. What a beautiful game.

  • that was a very english sounding Ya-ta...

  • O_o my hearing is bad..... I thought it was YA HAAAAAAARRRR!!!

  • It's japanese word "Yatta!" (that mean "It's over/done")

  • This game has some of the most beautiful 2D artwork I've ever seen :)
