@1sunvol monthly paygrade is determined by rank and number of years in service. For example an O-3 which is a Captain is only paid $3,660.60 a month initially, but it is bumped up when you hit the 2 year mark to $4,149.90. But at 18 years of service (you would likely get a promotion long before then) an O-4 which is a Major makes $6,951.90 a month.
I was kinda curious, how long does it take out of basic before you are qualified for air drops? Do you have to have like your 5-level or will you be randomly trained into it out of tech school?
You're not gonna get an answer to the altitude question. Sorry. None of us are gonna give that out. It would endanger the ones in the AOR that are doing that while you read this.
@coryconklin14 yea i guess so, thats what my recruiter told me...it was the 4th but i guess it got pushed back or something. and hey we might, your going for loadmaster?
@coryconklin14 im not sure as of yet because she said they placed me in the general career field and id have to wait till the 3rd week of basic to know for a fact, but its #1 on my list and she said i should end up getting it since they are placing me in a job during BMT or some shit like that lol but yea hopefully
@c130dave1 _ Yes. I'm sure the C-130 crew don't wear helmets/masks. "Usually C-130 crew members, except the loadmasters, only wear helmets and masks when they absolutely have to—they usually wear headphones."
@rf13v Which is it? You first said pilots do NOT wear oxygen masks or helmets. When I questioned you, you now say "Usually", they don't. I mean, I'd really like your input on this, seeing as how I've been flying as a c-130 loadmaster for time now...And if pilots absolutely do not wear helmets or oxygen, then I need to go tell all the ones I know to stop wearing them and them. Who cares if we are over 20,000 Ft. MSL unpressurized, rf13v said we don't wear'em. Hypoxia is for babies.
@c130dave1 _I didn't say they do not wear. I said they usually don't need to. It depends on the mission. Again: "...only wear helmets and masks when they absolutely have to—they usually wear headphones". (I don't care if you're a loadmaster. If you say C-130 pilots use helmets, you're giving a wrong info, assuming they "always" use it). Type in Google "C-130 HALO Practice", first result, open it and read it.
@rf13v Actually, your exact remarks that started this were..."wrong. C-130 pilots do not need to wear oxygen masks. they don't even wear helmets." - That, if anything, was competely missleading and inaccurate. Those were your exact words. I never said or lead anyone to believe we always wear helmets. I also never gave wrong info. It was only after I questioned you that you mentioned "Usually". @c130dave1 __Well, then I assume both of us failed. You failed when you answered to someone "yes, C-130 pilots wear helmets/maks", and I failed in my reply "Wrong, they don't need to." Both comments are incomplete. Our answer to that question should be simply "They wear helmets/masks IF needed." That's it.
Wrong. "C-130 crew members, except the loadmasters, only wear helmets and masks when they absolutely have to—they usually wear headphones. We didn’t have a phystech (physiology technician) on board because we weren’t going above 25,000 feet."

Nice video. I was running the checklist in my head. Kind of neat that you guys went to the J knives to cut a manual gate. I had one or two guys cut themselves using a regular knife doing it long ago. This looked a bit safer, but I'd want it to be extra sharp. Thanks for the memories! Load Clear!
Exactly. Now we know why Nirvana got so popular: people had had it with hair-metal. But it was successfully muted and the video was great. Fived for the vid, not for the music.
@c130dave1 I dont know what prankbros was talkin about. i think it was the perfect song for the vid, I mean...there *IS* a countdown for the drop and the song is called "final countdown". My grandpa was a loadmaster on a C-130 back in 'Nam. so...OORAH TO YA DAVE!!!!!
Loadmaster at Pope AFB from 87-91 here. With the 41st TAS. Flew on "E" models. Miss the 3 months at RAF Mildenhall and Lakenheath. Miss the CDS bundles, the Humvees, the tank drops. Was a fun time in my youth.
This is a pretty tame combat drop. Wait till you are doing an emergency drop popping off flares with A-10 escorts putting holes in the ground! Even that is tame compared to Vietnam!
I was a loadmaster from 1969-1975. First at Pope then Willow Grove NAS. From 1971 -75 I was an instructor. We dropped CDS from 500 - 1000 ft, heavy equipment from over 1500 ft. As 46airknocker stated our CDS drops were released by an extraction chute released from a bomb rack over the ramp. We also wore a parachute until about 1974. Then we switched to the restraining strap. It was more confining but safer. The chute we wore would not have opened before we hit the ground on CDS drops
Well he has to go to Tech School (for loadmasters this will take 6-8 months, because there is complicated things in there and he has water survival training.
Very nice drop. Dyess doesnt get to do any of that although we train for it every day of our lives. They give all the good stuff to the guard and reserves because otherwise (from what I hear) they wouldnt take the missions to the middle east.
ooh man, Im signing up for the air force ones im done with the studie im following right now, and like (mattd166) im first trying to become a fighter pilot, if not this is what im going 2 do
You don't use the static line retriever to cut CDS loose anymore? Doesn't somebody think it's dangerous to have the LM behind the load after 1 min warning? What kept the other stick of CDS from rolling when you cut the aft restraint?
Yes, we still use static line retriever. However, in 2007 the primary method for gate cutting in the AOR was the manual gate cut with J-Knife. Can't say if that is still SOP. As for what kept the other stick from rolling out? The other loadmaster was manually holding it back. JK :) - Double Stick CVR was used. Second gate was installed on the other stick. As for being behind a load after 1 min. - We are not to be aft of an "unrestrained" load, which we weren't. Thanks for the comment.

Nice video. I was running the checklist in my head. Kind of neat that you guys went to the J knives to cut a manual gate. I had one or two guys cut themselves using a regular knife doing it long ago. This looked a bit safer, but I'd want it to be extra sharp. Thanks for the memories! Load Clear!

ruined by theme song...
Squirrel9901 2 years ago
Exactly. Now we know why Nirvana got so popular: people had had it with hair-metal. But it was successfully muted and the video was great. Fived for the vid, not for the music.

I actually agree with you on the music selection. But can't take it back now... Most of my other choices for theme songs get deleted....

Tampaslice 2 years ago
This is a pretty tame combat drop. Wait till you are doing an emergency drop popping off flares with A-10 escorts putting holes in the ground! Even that is tame compared to Vietnam!
wooda113 2 years ago
I was a loadmaster from 1969-1975. First at Pope then Willow Grove NAS. From 1971 -75 I was an instructor. We dropped CDS from 500 - 1000 ft, heavy equipment from over 1500 ft. As 46airknocker stated our CDS drops were released by an extraction chute released from a bomb rack over the ramp. We also wore a parachute until about 1974. Then we switched to the restraining strap. It was more confining but safer. The chute we wore would not have opened before we hit the ground on CDS drops

If you are at Dyess, you will be doing enough of this I'm sure. I'm with the N.C. Air Guard out of Charlotte, NC - 156th AS.

my oldest boy is at Lackland AFB Texas, and will be done with bmt very soon and will start loadmaster school. how long before his first drop...
MrToobadforyou 2 years ago
Well he has to go to Tech School (for loadmasters this will take 6-8 months, because there is complicated things in there and he has water survival training.
Laken2112 2 years ago
do u guy's have parachutes in case u fall?or if u slip and fall u die?
PRESTON58CENT 2 years ago
a loadmaster is straped to the plane to they cannot go out of the plane, parrachutes i imagine they do incase of safty rope failure
SaintOfSin21 2 years ago
loadmasters are not airborne qualified. They are harnessed in.
Laken2112 2 years ago
Very nice drop. Dyess doesnt get to do any of that although we train for it every day of our lives. They give all the good stuff to the guard and reserves because otherwise (from what I hear) they wouldnt take the missions to the middle east.

Loved it =) All the bitching about rigging is worth it for the few seconds it rolls out....
Loadchik 3 years ago
very true, and its not like rigging some manual gate cut CDS is a big deal anyway.
2AirMan2 2 years ago
You don't use the static line retriever to cut CDS loose anymore? Doesn't somebody think it's dangerous to have the LM behind the load after 1 min warning? What kept the other stick of CDS from rolling when you cut the aft restraint?
Bustafunny 3 years ago
Yes, we still use static line retriever. However, in 2007 the primary method for gate cutting in the AOR was the manual gate cut with J-Knife. Can't say if that is still SOP. As for what kept the other stick from rolling out? The other loadmaster was manually holding it back. JK :) - Double Stick CVR was used. Second gate was installed on the other stick. As for being behind a load after 1 min. - We are not to be aft of an "unrestrained" load, which we weren't. Thanks for the comment.
