@sidecrank You don't have to take my word for it. Read the book of Maccabees 4 yourself and see 4 yourself how they resisted being forced to worship Greek gods and embrace Hellenization. Just google book of Maccabees or something. If you look into it yourself and question what you read and hear from haters you'll find the truth. That's the best way to find something out. Look by yourself and be open minded about it.
@sidecrank I don't think Duke writes honest books. I've looked into the culture of Jews for myself and hope to be a cultural anthropologist someday. If you read Maccabees, which isn't canonized scripture by most but contains the story of Hanukkah, you'll see that the holiday actually celebrates freedom of religion for ancient people in Israel during the time of Alexander the Great. Just like this video says. This video actually gives a pretty good account of what Hanukkah is.

But Palestinians are Arab with little ancient history attached to Israel aside from the Nabatean Arabs who lived there. And that has nothing to do with Maccabees or Antiochus, the conqueror. Maybe people would be more excepting of Islam if they didn't have such an accepting view on suicide and suicide bombing. If KABOOM is how Allah is merciful then I'm scared.

They may have worked hard for the money that they earned, but if they're spending it on plasma screen television sets for each patient, that's their problem. There were 3 main Torah commandments that the Syrian Greeks forbid the Jews to obey: Rosh Chodesh (Jewish calendar), Circumcision, and Torah study. "A.D." actually stands for the Latin phrase "Amino Domini" (sp), which means "in the year of our Lord". Also, year 1 is supposed to be the year Jesus was BORN, not the year he _died_.

It would be nice to see Christmas being explained, but I don't think Elmo has subscribed to the Christian Channel.
It is interesting that a children show even goes into the Maccabean era, but you think that if they could do that they could at least give the reason for why the holiday is called Christmas (they could even explain that the RC church used the calendar day of a pagan holiday to celebrate it--they wouldn't be lying.) I don't expect them to be religious, hello it's PBS...
