Unfortunately I didn't know about this contest soon enough to vote, but I completely disagree with this one... The boots picture was really lame in my opinion.
Hey guys - it is all typical. British guy stealing somebodys idea... Just a young lad talented, and modest... At the end of the day - that is what creates commercial photography, and who cares about J.Bieber haircut, photoshop, copyrights ? To me - there is a doubt even about him taking actual photo. No friends around to picture you using a camera ? Are you Edward from Twillight-emo-saga or what ? Fuk this competition... Sold out...
I haven't really paid attention to this show, but I have to comment on this. As a designer I really do not mind someone photoshopping a photo together. To me the aesthetics of the picture is most important, not the timing/situation. HOWEVER, you can't do actual work with components that doesn't belong to you. As he clearly did. But the worst part here is the fact that he lied about the capture. That makes one question the persons ethics. I have NO respect for this guy now.
and i thought Charlie is awesome but he is a cheater after all. now i'm not sure if he is really the one who took his other entries. Shame on you dude.

Charlie also emailed the owner of the blog (after the blog owner had emailed him about the banner) and said that he had no idea the image was online, and that his sister had bought him a print of the image and that's how he came to have it! Sure...your sister copied and pasted someone's blog banner and printed it out as a gift...wtf?
not supporting charlie in any way but just saying that the photo he took is fair enough showing that i can be taken from a phone camera...i know because i do that most of the time..adjusting the contrast to max, saturation to min, and sharpness to plus one notch..you will get roughly the same halftone as charlie's photo.

one of the biggest pet peeve of most if not all photographers: Someone takes credit or edits your work. Recommend disqualification for plagiarism. As the saying goes ''Sorry Charlie''.
If someone has been submitting photos that are not their own then this whole contest should be voided. People who have actually been taking photos have been eliminated. How many more of this "5 time winner's" photos been doctored?? Man, DigRev has a real mess on their hands.
The image is all over the net and in other photoshopped images, Yes he shouldn't of lied but as others have said nearly all photo's are shopped in some way.
@Puppyjans And we only see an edited version of the skype call between Kai and the contestants so we don't really no what was said and as i understand it there is nothing against using photoshop in the DigitalRev rules. Until we hear from digitalRev or Kai or Charlie we don't know enough to make comments on kicking him out.

Until an official post is made he should stay in the comp he's a great photographer.

in fairness of the competition where other competitors played fairly and took the photo with their phone and didnt photoshop it.... and the fact Charlie blatantly lied... i think he should be disqualified... this is a photography challenge NOT a photoshop challenge... otherwise every one could have taken a photo and used photoshop to alter the image to the right effect. @OrsonMyles I've seen the image of the girl before. I'm a designer and a big fan of midcentury modern design. I've seen pretty much every image on plan59.com. I recognized it straight away and couldn't understand why that image would be on a wall in Kings Cross. I didn't recognize the text over the image: "For The Love of Ellipses", but I Googled it and found the blog. Everything pointed to Charlie cheating, so I messaged Hessel, Forest, DigitalRev, Plan59, etc. to bring this all to the surface.

But my blog's name is on that image, and I find it hard to believe your sister found my dinky American blog and printed out it's banner for a birthday present.

As the owner of that blog, and the maker of that "billboard," I own no rights to that font, or the original image. It took 10 minutes to make it. It's a shame that Charlie apparently couldn't spare the same 10 minutes. Whoever posts these videos should contact me for proof of blog ownership.
@grmcrckr25 Seeing as how the advertisement was created in 1954, US copyright laws protect the image from being part of the public domain until 2049. I would say Charlie/DigitalRev's use of the image would be 'for profit' and 'commercial' usage.

@MangoNoir Charlie, photoshopping and retouching is fine in photography and in this communication; when you communicate it as being part of the proces. Which you didn't.
At 13:06 in this episode's video you try to make everyone believe that all you did was take the shot, that all the elements in your photograph were there when you took it and it didn't take any post-processing. You lied to everyone by making us think this is a pure street-shot, of a moment happening and going away.
I'm happy Hessel's gone. I didn't like his work right from the start. Congratuations to Charlie, I'm glad he keeps on winning and I hope he wins the whole competition.

Second that he stole an image from a blog (ellipseslove.wordpresscom) and subsequently, Plan59.com, which is a violation of US copyright laws. @theblackkite What you're speaking of is called postmodernism - postmodernist art borrows different features or characteristics from different eras and recreates something new, or at least tries to. It's just mixed media. So what you're seeing is an artist that took that image put text on it and used it for advertisement, and Charlie used it for his photo. Charlie is already a commercial photographer, while for the others photography is a hobby. So while others shoot with their heart, Charlie makes photos to please the judges.
Second thing that already been mentioned is that mister Atkinson knew from the beginning the size of a prints DRTV shows to the judges (he is a commercial photographer, remember?) But did he share his knowledge with the others? No.
And his last photo. He photoshopped the key subject to the photo. That's just lame!
Charlie's Photoshop was good enough... but the shadows didn't work well out-door... somebody has put that billboard just after that cyclist passed by... i think...

It's a shame Hessel is kicked out of the competition :( :( ..... overall his work is far more outstanding then the other competitors. I wish him all the best. And for the three remaining..Go for it.. Hessel's was the worst this time, but overall, I think he was up near the very top when you look at his work in general.
On the other hand, Forest has been consistently poor. Also, he seems to have just gotten lucky this time. He seems to just pull out his camera at any random moment that looks good to him. Maybe he can see what looks good, but there's very little effort involved. His pic this time was good but I really hope he doesn't win next time.
Ok, to everybody outhere, just for you information. Natasha's, Forest's and Hessel's photos were deliberated cropped by DR team before print them. So the judges saw the cropped vertions! Except Charlie's photo that was not cropped!
Charlie knew that DR team used to print 5x7, but he keeped that information just for himself, information that he only shared last week!! Don't believe me? Ask Natasha, Forest or Hessel.

Come on please display the photos longer in the video. This is a photography competition and you are showing the photos on screen only once and for like 2 seconds?
how stupid. they should be looking at the screen in full resolution than looking at the printed photo. if that's how the challenge was gonna be judged, then everyone should just shoot and crop it in the printed format. who's fault ? DRTV, judges, or photographers ?

I'm very happy with the judge's devotion on who gets to stay and who gets eliminated. I think the three photographers that are left are the strongest fro the bunch. The winner this time has raised the bar prototype high. The girl in the photograph does look scary. The photographer achieved what he wanted.

I said it in the last video and I'll say it again I feel they need bigger prints to show the judges. Those small prints just don't cut it imo especially for a photography competition.
IDK how big you can get a camera phone picture, but for the rest I don't feel those small prints did them justice.

Hessel should've been in the finals god damm*t, overall he had really good photo's. To bad the jury only judges the last challange w/o looking at the earlier challenges. I mean Forest has been overall pretty sloppy and could've been eliminated already a couple of times. IMO Hessel has been taking better pictures than Forest overall so its a shame Hessel gets eliminated. Thumbs Up if you think the same as me!
DigitalRev, you can at least go to the trouble of printing the pictures properly if your contestants are going to spend so much time and effort for your competition. I also think you should not tell the judges who shot each photo and keep the elimination rules consistent through the entire competition.
well I don't think any of the competitors really did something special with the idea of an "Iphone\cell phone camera shot". The images look like they could have been taken with any other type of camera.
I won't comment on "winners" and "losers" (I will say that Hassel was one of my favorites- good luck to you!), but it seemed like the judges weren't consistent with their opinions. They found intelectual reasons for photos they didn't like and dropped them for some they liked. it's a bit weak.

But my blog's name is on that image, and I find it hard to believe your sister found my dinky American blog and printed out it's banner for a birthday present.

As the owner of that blog, and the maker of that "billboard," I own no rights to that font, or the original image. It took 10 minutes to make it. It's a shame that Charlie apparently couldn't spare the same 10 minutes. Whoever posts these videos should contact me for proof of blog ownership.

@grmcrckr25 Seeing as how the advertisement was created in 1954, US copyright laws protect the image from being part of the public domain until 2049. I would say Charlie/DigitalRev's use of the image would be 'for profit' and 'commercial' usage.

@MangoNoir Charlie, photoshopping and retouching is fine in photography and in this communication; when you communicate it as being part of the proces. Which you didn't.
At 13:06 in this episode's video you try to make everyone believe that all you did was take the shot, that all the elements in your photograph were there when you took it and it didn't take any post-processing. You lied to everyone by making us think this is a pure street-shot, of a moment happening and going away.

Second that he stole an image from a blog (ellipseslove.wordpresscom) and subsequently, Plan59.com, which is a violation of US copyright laws. Lastly, he broke the rules of the contest as per DigitalRev: The submission must not contain material that violates [..] privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement. He should be out.

@theblackkite What you're speaking of is called postmodernism - postmodernist art borrows different features or characteristics from different eras and recreates something new, or at least tries to. It's just mixed media. So what you're seeing is an artist that took that image put text on it and used it for advertisement, and Charlie used it for his photo. Charlie is already a commercial photographer, while for the others photography is a hobby. So while others shoot with their heart, Charlie makes photos to please the judges.
Second thing that already been mentioned is that mister Atkinson knew from the beginning the size of a prints DRTV shows to the judges (he is a commercial photographer, remember?) But did he share his knowledge with the others? No.
And his last photo. He photoshopped the key subject to the photo. That's just lame!

Hessel's was the worst this time, but overall, I think he was up near the very top when you look at his work in general.
On the other hand, Forest has been consistently poor. Also, he seems to have just gotten lucky this time. He seems to just pull out his camera at any random moment that looks good to him. Maybe he can see what looks good, but there's very little effort involved. His pic this time was good but I really hope he doesn't win next time.

Ok, to everybody outhere, just for you information. Natasha's, Forest's and Hessel's photos were deliberated cropped by DR team before print them. So the judges saw the cropped vertions! Except Charlie's photo that was not cropped!
Charlie knew that DR team used to print 5x7, but he keeped that information just for himself, information that he only shared last week!! Don't believe me? Ask Natasha, Forest or Hessel.

I'm very happy with the judge's devotion on who gets to stay and who gets eliminated. I think the three photographers that are left are the strongest fro the bunch. The winner this time has raised the bar prototype high. The girl in the photograph does look scary. The photographer achieved what he wanted.

I said it in the last video and I'll say it again I feel they need bigger prints to show the judges. Those small prints just don't cut it imo especially for a photography competition.
IDK how big you can get a camera phone picture, but for the rest I don't feel those small prints did them justice.

Hessel should've been in the finals god damm*t, overall he had really good photo's. To bad the jury only judges the last challange w/o looking at the earlier challenges. I mean Forest has been overall pretty sloppy and could've been eliminated already a couple of times. IMO Hessel has been taking better pictures than Forest overall so its a shame Hessel gets eliminated. Thumbs Up if you think the same as me!

DigitalRev, you can at least go to the trouble of printing the pictures properly if your contestants are going to spend so much time and effort for your competition. I also think you should not tell the judges who shot each photo and keep the elimination rules consistent through the entire competition.

well I don't think any of the competitors really did something special with the idea of an "Iphone\cell phone camera shot". The images look like they could have been taken with any other type of camera.
I won't comment on "winners" and "losers" (I will say that Hassel was one of my favorites- good luck to you!), but it seemed like the judges weren't consistent with their opinions. They found intelectual reasons for photos they didn't like and dropped them for some they liked. it's a bit weak.
