I wish people wouldn't throw this word "Socialism" around so lazily. Social inequality leads to a myriad of issues within a society. The United States is the most divided industrial nation, thus it is an issue worth resolving. To say that because Obama would like to see this divide diminished he is in fact socialist is absurd. It's this paranoia that detracts from clear, meaningful conversation.
I agree, although I do not like Obama's policies. I will admit that it has gotten difficult at this point to even understand what "socialism" menas. I do, however, believe that people should be able to earn as much money as they can, less tax loopholes (which is important to mention). We should have a consumption tax along with a smaller flat rate tax, except for people who are in a very low income bracket. We should not punish high earners.

There IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE between "free market economy", "social market economy", and "socialism"....
Obama tried to turn the USA a bit more towards a "social market economy" (Like most european states have today ... ) But clearly NOT into "socialism" (Like UDSSR, and GDR once had)
Hell, even the vatican has a "social market economy" and health care by state.

People need to just calm down. Obama is certainly not socialist and has a voting record and compromise deals to prove it. But liberals such as myself need to see him for what he is and not just blindly support him. He is an incompetent negotiator and often seeks out political victory over the greater good of america. However he is certainly not socialist and he believes in democracy, capitalism, and america.

I shouldn't have to pay taxes at all. What has this country ever done for me? Why should I pay minimum wage while slackers are living on unemployment? They should be required to work for me for maybe half the minimum wage ... better than sitting at home making more colored babies. Job creators should be able to use the money in unemployment funds to help me put these deadbeats to work.

The facts. You be the judge. The tax being asked to be raised right now is a surplus tax on income for those making 1 million+ per year.
The current code has this under 5% but obama wants to raise it to 5.6%.
My opinion: By charging six tenth of a percentage point he hopes to reinvest in America to get construction going again [hardest hit industry in recession].

@dwoods828 depends on who you ask [taxes]. lets look back at the conservative idol himself, Ronald Reagan. During his presidency he cut taxes vastly across the board widening the tax base. But in the meantime deficits tripled during his presidency from 900 billion to almost 3 trillion.
Now I agree the gov is too big, programs should be cut and the private sector should be released, but with adequate regulations like Dodd Frank. no one wants another Enron, AIG, Worldcom, Tyco issue again.

@rayjames303 It's important to note that after Reagan cut taxes in 1981 he recognized that it caused huge structural deficits, so he raised taxes in 1982 at a time when unemployment was over 10%! He then proceeded to raise taxes 10 more times during his Presidency! Clinton raised taxes in 1993 and it resulted in a balanced budget a few years later and 22.7 million jobs. Bush and Obama have ONLY cut taxes even during a time of war, and collectively they have the WORST job creation record EVER!

Cut DEA and ATF because they are incompetent, and because they cause more issues than they solve.
You want to stop the violence and cartels, then legalize drugs. model for this is prohibition, the min it started, the black market made millions [American Mafia] and crime sky rocketed.

@dwoods828 Yes, in USA you have a useless education system because it isnt directed towards specific jobs. This is because the PRIVATE enterprise sets up the schools that way. I would like to point out that schooling is cheaper in the scandinavian country, and better, and more specific, and everyone can use it because we actually pay taxes. Whereas we couldnt if it was private because its been estimated that the price would be almost 1/3 of what an adult makes in a year.

I wish people wouldn't throw this word "Socialism" around so lazily. Social inequality leads to a myriad of issues within a society. The United States is the most divided industrial nation, thus it is an issue worth resolving. To say that because Obama would like to see this divide diminished he is in fact socialist is absurd. It's this paranoia that detracts from clear, meaningful conversation.

I agree, although I do not like Obama's policies. I will admit that it has gotten difficult at this point to even understand what "socialism" menas. I do, however, believe that people should be able to earn as much money as they can, less tax loopholes (which is important to mention). We should have a consumption tax along with a smaller flat rate tax, except for people who are in a very low income bracket. We should not punish high earners.

I get it now - it should be the government who gets to decide what I need and what I "don't need". Silly me, believing in the American Dream of life, liberty and the "pursuit of happiness". The government will let me know "how much I need" and when I "should be happy". I recall hearing this before somewhere - It went something like--
"From each" according to his abilities "to each" according to "his needs".
