You have to notice that the story told in the French Version is quite different, compared with your version ! In French, it's a sad story; Stewball is being killed during a race because he has fallen and has been injured !
Assez curieuse l'histoire du cheval Irlandais Stewball. Il gagnait ses courses et ne tombait pas comme dans la chanson d'Hugues AUFFRAY. La mélodie composée avec Delanoë a donné une autre dimension à cette histoire pour en faire une chanson populaire pleine de symboles et d'espérance.
