Ronnie and the boys are having too much fun on his 60th birthday! Way to go, "Mr. Dynamo"!!!!!!!!! Love this video although it's all sound. That's okay. You should be up and dancing anyway. The dialogue is electrifying.
You want to hear the most kickass version of this tune - better than Chuck Berry's - check out Swedish band "The Refreshments" with guest guitarist, Albert Lee. What a blazin' rendition! Worth your time - Really! Holy Hell! Talk about rockin' piano, guitars, sax!
I think if you give The Refreshments version 3 minutes of your time, you'll be glad you did, if you love good old, Classic R&R (sounds like you do). It's no disrespect to Ronnie, just a hats off to an awesome performance.
As to Lee versus Healey, I tend to not rate musicians like it's possible to do with more tangible, cut-and-dried standards, like two runners in a race. With accomplished, dedicated artists of the caliber of Healey and Lee it's just about appreciating their unique mastery.
You and i dont have a problem with Ronnie not being as good as the singer on the Refreshments.Healey just did more with his talent,he was blind. He had to figure a way to play sitting down,he was very unique.Thats all im saying. The Refreshments are a very good band.
I hear you. I respect Healy's playing AND what he overcame At the same time, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder: blind or sighted it's just their playing that I think they want considered.
It's all good, fun Rock & Roll and Roll, though and both versions are fun.
Good talking with you.
PS: , Levon Helm's book is great and has good things to say about Ronnie and their times together (as it should!).
This DVD is fantastic. Find it. Buy it. This was Ronnie Hawkins' 60th birthday party at Massey Hall. Featured guests : Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. JLL's performance alone is worth it ... with the late Jeff Healey playing the guitar on his lap ( that's him in the break) and that song in particular had Ronnie's old band member Lawrence Gowan on piano. Put this on when nobody's home and crank it up! Add your favorite beverage and you're in heaven.
If you listen again you can hear that L.G is taking over at 1.21. Jerry cant play like this but you can hear Jerry a bit in the beginning of Lawrence solo.
Wow!!!!!!!
