This video is a classic.Elton John is a timeless genius.Whats with that subdued crowed,it's as if they were hearing that song for the first time.Great energy Switzerland.
Jeez, it seems I have to say this every time I'm on an Elton video. It's his own personal business, what makes you think you have any business with what this great man does in his own bedroom?
@userboy6...That doesn't make sense. Because people choose to behave in certain ways (note I did not say choose to be gay), it doesn't mean God has made them do that.
@zzzbbbooo Let me offer you a suggestion. If you don't like/approve of what Elton John is/does, then get your ass off here and find a video more to your liking and more in line with your intellgence level.
@baddave62 Can see why you identify so strongly with Elton John. Elton used to be a pretty good guy, but now he's just a belligerent foul-mouthed prima donna who can't bear anyone to hold an opinion that differs from his own...a bit like you, mate! LOL!
this is such a great song, well the WHOLE album is just wonderful.. rich, soulful and after 36 years of listening to it (bought it when I was 14) I never tire of these songs!!!
God I love this song! The song is so true. This came out in a time when there was alot of racial tension and civil right movements , but in the end of the day it doesn't matter what you look like , we are all one people. Thank you for the wonderful tune Elton.
The one line of this song sums up the sickness of the white liberal/communist mind: "What's his color I don' care he's my brother", that line for all civilized people is what we all want, but it can and will never happen, it's utopian thinking that can never be realized. This way of thinking is a death sentence for the white race. Look at what's becoming of Britian and Europe, the white man is becoming a minority in his own nation, same thing is happening in America. WHITE PEOPLE WAKE UP OR DIE!
@rlawton002 I would say there are 50 similarly talented people[at least]in every generation. This generation has been very commoditised with every breath exploited for profit. That's the killer. And of course the people doing this were the 'cool dudes'of yesteryear[died along the way resurrecting as souless life-stylers].[Where are my pills?]
Lead vocal is live, the backing is a mix of the original with the lead track taken off. It was done sometimes on Top Of The Pops to fit in with time and space constraints. You were lucky if they did that, often the whole thing was just mimed. Not sure where this is from, anyone know? It's not TOTP though, more like "In Concert", but that was a bit different looking and everything was played live.
@IThinkYouLookLarvely Note to self: Read the caption at the start. Hits-A-Go-Go, the Swiss Top Of The Pops. Good quality clip this. Hopefully the BBC find some more classic performances from the '70s they foolishly lost.
God would not have given Elton John his intense and extraordinary talent if he didn't think it was deserved. Gay or not... purple, black or white. Judge no one before you point that finger at yourself.
@studiobekka well actually there's no such thing as god, as he has never been proven to exist-kind of like unicorns, is that too hard to understand? Anyway, while I appreciate your peaceful message, Elton John worked for his talent, it wasn't given to him by an invisible man in the sky. So of course he deserves it.
Elton John is not afraid to speak from his heart, and secure enough not to care what a bunch of atheist fairies have to say. Why don't you all just enjoy one of the greatest artists of our time
get this John Lennon listened to Elton being an extreme homophobe and said I wanna meet him so John gets his wish in 1972 I believe and as Elton gets off the plane John gets on one knee and says in fear and fangirl shock it's him it's him it's him now that seals how good he is right there John Lennon actually forgot himself shocking isn't it
Awesome song... uses the traditional american church tone to express the hypocracy associated with such a movement, and goes back to the real or what should be the real intent of religion... to love your neighbor as yourself as opposed to what history has been unveling about religion... murder, hate, prejudice, exclusivity, and theft. The narrator, in his quest for truth, fell - only to realize the truth of it all. Holy Moses! Love is what existence hangs on, and xtianity is out to destroy it.
I don't think this is the record version. He just sings it very much the way he does on the record. If you study the recorded version, you can hear little differences. But it's still a great, live performance.
This doesn't sound live. I don't see any strings, drums or back-up vocals. There's so much of this stuff on youtube. I don't know ho does all the dubbing
Is the sound really from the live concert? because it sounds exactly like in the album. whenever there's a live song it sounds a little bit different, here sounds too perfect
I am an atheist, but this is one of the most poignant songs I know. The gospel tradition goes beyond simple dogma, and is a musical form that expresses great emotion, everyone's wrestling with the human condition, and the tensions between, joy, fear, sorrow, anger, and acceptance.
Anyone who speaks negatively of this song because it draws on Judeo-Christian iconography is missing the point. Even though I am an atheist, the gospel of this song draws me in because it is a human statement.
I love this song. Probably one of the best! If you like real music, please visit my video, a cover of Elton John's Border Song. Please comment! Lets keep the good music alive! /watch?v=dPtXGmXPSU4
@ajpianoman1 ? I can't know English very well yet. I always use dictionary. Did I make a mistake my English? I felt when I watched this video first, wig for moman is expensive. I like this song and elton that maybe nice gay and nice guy.
um all you religious zealots and freaks, go ahead and be angry with this song..because its about YOU! It speaks of the unneccesary dogma and hate that is attached to your interpreted beliefs! You are the poison and the bad water! Pure and true holiness is in the last line...'he's my brother, let us live in peace"!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As one who followed Elton since his very first TV programme in 1968 on a well forgotten talent show and has every album, seen countless concerts, this is one of the best on youtube. His voice has changed over the years no doubt but in my very humble opinion this is the definitive Elton John.
Was an Elton fan way, way back in 73. As time went on it seemed like he got more and more commercial with the pop style at the time. The ebbing of what I call "the beautiful Southern Sensibilities" tended to wane. The older albums, Madman Across the Water,& Honky Chateau, are thankfully an archive for all time of this rich, blood, sweat and tears singing style. He was at his best, for me in that earlier time period. Just my take on it. Thanks Elton & Bernie.
@canadiananny86 i thought it was about immigration :/ , someone going to a refugee going to another country and getting a load of abuse and wanting to go back but yes i agree the music is the more important part :)
An icon of the music industry the likes of which we may not see ever again, the industry as we knew it and times gone for ever, listen and weep...........................
Almost incredible talent. When he's at his best Elton John's virtually untouchable, his blend of country, gospel and rock'n'roll is just sublime. Rock on Elton!
As For Sir Elton John what He Does With His PRIVATE LIFE is his buisness there is no better artist song writer or performer alive today that can match his quality, style, and vocals... As For All You Bible Thumping HELLFIRE AND BRIMSTONE PREACHING MONEY GRUBBING PREACHERS WHO WANT TO CONDEM A MAN FOR HIS LIFESTYLE READ YOU OWN BOOK " THOU SHALL NOT STEAL " compare the offering plate to a preachers salary sometime whose jackin who?
"Nobody is forcing you to participate or read these comments you find so unbearable." Back atcha, ChristianBigot1. It's disrespectful to a great musical artist to fill the comments section with paragraphs of commentary about what some fantasy character in a fantasy book might have said about the artist's sexual orientation. Y'all have a perfect right to do it. and I have a perfect right to say that you're full of shit and disrespectful and should take this crap somewhere else.
With all the talk of religion- for me Elton's new The Union album with Leon Russell is so good it feels like a religious experience. And Leon's appearance reminds of God.
Awesome song and artist - include Taupin in here too. After looking at some of the posts here, I think this song is about a guy who ventured into religion only to find that there was no love or compassion toward others in there, and then decided to head back and once again recognize others ie the black man as his brother.
religion has nothing to do with this video. it's funny how often christians choose to ignore "love thy neighbor" which if you believe jesus existed is supposed to override the hate in dueteronomy. love they neighbor was his highest law and should be the only one we need. this is just incredible music.
@vlunney Actually it technically does, the song has underlying messages about religion...
So why shouldn't people talk about it?
I agree with you. One thing I despised as a child when I attended Catholic school, was the fact that they told me "love thy neighbor" and stuff like that...and just looking around and seeing such a lack of it. You see it in the most self proclaimed "Christians."
@vlunney First of all, Deuteronomy does not teach hate. Please actually read the Scriptures before making statements about them that are inaccurate. Actually, when Jesus commanded to "love thy neighbor as thyself" he was quoting from the Old Testament book of Leviticus which is grouped wth the book of Deutronomy you find so hateful. You're right about love, however - it is the highest law; Jesus in fact said all of the law was summarized in the command to love.
@eflows Again, the comment section of YouTube is supposed to be available for people who want to discuss matters relating to the featured video. The "fucking religious talk", as u so tastefully put it, began months ago w/ thoughts on Elton John's homosexuality. Nobody is forcing you to participate or read these comments you find so unbearable.
People need to quit worrying about someone else PRIVATE life, it's none of your business to worry about. JUst sit back and enjoy the most gifted musician, singer, songwriter on this planet. Enjoy the talent that comes across and is on display. I remeber the flack back in 1976 because of the Rolling Stone interview. When everybody turned away I loved him anyways because it was ALWAYS ABOUT THE MUSIC. And 35 years later he is STILL my idol. Because he and Bernie put out the most wonderful MUSIC.
I'm old enough to have been around as he came on the music scene - Lot of memories with his songs - don't think he ever wrote a bad one!!!! Live long and continue to prosper
The amazing Elton John, one of the greatest talents of our time, showing why he was such a hit at the start of his career. Any info on exactly when and where this performance was?

religion has nothing to do with this video. it's funny how often christians choose to ignore "love thy neighbor" which if you believe jesus existed is supposed to override the hate in dueteronomy. love they neighbor was his highest law and should be the only one we need. this is just incredible music.
vlunney 1 year ago
@vlunney Actually it technically does, the song has underlying messages about religion...
So why shouldn't people talk about it?
I agree with you. One thing I despised as a child when I attended Catholic school, was the fact that they told me "love thy neighbor" and stuff like that...and just looking around and seeing such a lack of it. You see it in the most self proclaimed "Christians."
Sshelly34213 1 year ago

@eflows easy there dude! I agree that EJ is one of the greatest musicians but I believe one can expand discussion to solid points as he did.

Elton, with his own hair, ordinary glasses, casually dressed, the voice intact,
you know it's gonna be great. Not that he isn't still very good, just that he was
great then.

The collaboration between Elton John and Bernie Taupin (who wrote the lyrics of most of the songs) was pure genius.

The amazing Elton John, one of the greatest talents of our time, showing why he was such a hit at the start of his career. Any info on exactly when and where this performance was?
