This sounds similar to Buddhist mindfulness. Of course in Buddhism, they talk about "holding" negative emotions- not identifying with them, but also not being alarmed by them, letting them pass away. Eventually what happens is you stop having so many negative emotions arising.
Precisely. They are very similar. The early teachers speak of a "science of the soul" and their methodologies are recognized as a psychotherapy which is timeless. Their teachings on the passions (corrupted into the so-called seven deadly sins)deal with our healing from various pathologies.
the spiritual warfare is a warfare indeed- against one's own emotions and whims of the flesh that without the direction given by the discipline of faith is distructive. nothing comes easyly: war is war!
