I also like the dampening - mind you it must be a bugger to keep in tune (64 strings I believe set up in twin courses). A fairly obscure though wonderful instrument - glad to see some people are still keeping the skills alive. Being from Northern Ireland, I was surprised to hear the hammer dulcimer was made for generations in Antrim up until 40 years ago. The (non hammer) dulcimer appears to be a totally different instrument - presumably both instruments had the same common ancestor

@Stevieboy130664 I live in SE Oklahoma, US, and every autumn they have a hammered dulcimer festival. The instrument came over with the Scots-Irish, traveled into the Appalachian Mountains and is still popular there today, and then across the US westward. Many Irish/Scots settled here, including my own family, and they brought their music with them. I would dearly love to learn to play myself.
