I knew it! I suspected they'd planned the pregnancy thing when I thought about when the wife was asking May about how many kids her mom had, etc. I almost feel bad for the husband, though, but really...he's a hardcore coward to treat his wife AND May, who he says he loves, this way.

Stories and even sacred rites and rituals are often changed just for dramatic effect. It's not [necessarily] right but it's the nature of the movie | tv industry and the intended audience they're trying to reach.
father melia strikes me as a priest who didn't always follow the rule books by the letter. he has a compassionate heart that seems to understand when the rules are important, and when they're not.
