  • repeat

  • Wow! 3/3 mixed with 4/4,what a Merry Christmas! :)

  • For everyone debating the nine pound hammer reference... I'm sure someone of his depth goes back to the origin of the term... the nine pound hammer was John Henry's weapon when defeated a steam hammer at laying track. He died upon winning holding his nine pound hammer... there are many lovely metaphors and images wrought from comparing a good woman as your nine pound hammer

  • Comment removed

  • Ray probably has one of the best and most iconic voices I've ever heard.

  • unbelievable song

  • Sooooo Goood!

  • My interpratation of nine pound hammer or a woman like you is this:... A nine pound hammer would be really hard to hold on to if you were using it.. and likewise a man needs a woman who is also hard to hold on to.... kind of like how people always have the desire or need to aspire for things that are barely or just out of ones reach.

  • @portcitydude Just posted the full story for you... its referencing John Henry's nine pound hammer he used to beat a steam hammer at laying track. He defeated the machine and promptly died holding his nine pound hammer... a good woman is a man's nine pound hammer, they can make you strong enough to beat the world, you can live and die by them, but always you hold on.

  • if you dig this check out The Regretting Man on facebook and youtube

  • @MeyerLansky78 totally agree

  • I use to find myself lost in his voice. So amazing...

  • Saw him at Bonnaroo this past year and it was amazing. I would def recommend seing him live.

  • Ray is the man!!! Love his music, lyrics, and sound. Soulful and powerful imagery in his lyrics which I can relate to. I am sure there are many others that would agree with me on this.

  • Like the studio version. LOVE this one.

  • love how he says Zac whoever when zac brown is like 100 times more popular than this guy.

  • This is so beautiful in every way.

  • I have caught nearly all of the hidden meanings of the lyrics in this song. But when he sings held you in my arms one time and lost you just the same. Do you think maybe this girl died in his arms or that she left him without warning.

  • @TheBigkees5888 I think he lost her because of cocain

  • @TheBigkees5888 held you in my arms, lost you just the same. sounds to me like maybe she was a cheater.

  • so komme aus münchen

  • hiya könnte saltos schlagen so happy

  • HEs fawking too good..his voice straight touches to heart.keep it up ray .

  • This song --- and Ray's fantastic, smooth voice --- make me smile even through such sad lyrics. Love this tune.

  • what is the dam chord between blood stream and sold my coat

  • @fugeelama G7. middle finger A string 2nd fret, ringman low E string 3rd fret, pointer high E string 1st fret then right onto a C chord.

  • @quigonreturns Good music will never die, you fuck ass.

  • anyone know what album this is from?

  • @thefnbeast666 Trouble

  • Whenever I listen to this song I get lost in how heart-wrenchingly beautiful Ray's voice is. It has also made me cry on numerous occasions.

There is just something so unique and stunning about Ray's music, I just become lost in the moment and all my emotions burst forth like a waterfall. I could sit here and listen to his voice all day. Ray Lamontagne's and Damien Rice's voices that is.

  • do you people even understand how glorious this man's voice is?

  • My love <3

  • I'm so in love

  • I will never forget that this song is from you, Loredana. After all these years, I still listen and cry and enjoy every second of this song because it reminds me of you.. It`s like I can feel you next to me and smell your parfume.. Rest in peace. Love you forever!

  • I found Ray because of the commercial with the dog worried about his bone that led me to trouble and now this where have i been he is an ARTIST!

  • i have a lyrical question, one day I got curious and researched one of my favorite lines from the song "Man needs somethin he can hold on to, a nine pound hammer or a woman like you" i was like.. why a hammer? i googled it and I think its a beer company or something. Anyone now if its a alcohol reference? would make much more sense.

  • @fushiarabbit Johnny Cash had a song called nine pound hammer, apparently a drug reference. It's in your mind what you decide it means. I think of railroad workers, lifting something heavy all day. But either way its a weight that you carry.

  • @garysmigy i always thought like. a 9 pound 8 ounce baby. like a strong boy or a women like u. could be wrong tho

  • @fushiarabbit to everyone who wonders what 'nine pound hammer' means...its simply a reference to an addiction of some sort...something bearing down on you, consuming you wholly...its either that.or thinking about the other addiction of the woman you love with all of your being. He is saying..'a man needs something he can hold on too, a nine pound hammer'(a serious addiction to something that tears you apart) 'or a woman like you'(a serious addiction to something that tears you apart)

  • @MKP43 i'll have to disagree. a nine pound hammer was the standard hammer for coal miners. it symbolizes hard all consuming labor

  • @TexasTele1983 sure, an addiction to your work is a perfect example. Something that consumes you....that you dedicate your life to ...work or a woman....or an addiction to alcohol

  • @MKP43 No Your wrong. It's a Reference to John Henrey's 9 lb Hammer. There are many references to this folk music. A man needs something to hold onto, work or a woman NOT a woman or heroine.

  • I love his music, great voice love you Ray

  • hes helping me through a break up now!, I began listening to him a few years ago, but now Im really listening, I wish we could sit around and play a few tunes and bullshit sometime, we have alot in common.. Thanks Ray, for the truth, and if your ever aroung Bucyrus let me know..

  • saw him at bumbershoot! he is awesome..

  • His speaking voice is not what I was expecting...

  • He does this song better than Zac Brown. I love Zac...but Ray definitely does it better.

  • @jesseM456: I first heard this song on "World Cafe w/ David Dye" in the winter of '04-'05. It, and the whole album Trouble helped me through a breakup.

  • I'm actually surprised to say I did know this before the Town. I watched the credits of that and was like "OH!"

  • yay congrats for winning the grammy!

  • 0:09

  • Heartbreaking and beautiful. This song blows my mind every time I hear it. It's like I forget how brilliant it is, and then I rediscover it. Just perfection.

  • man does this bring back memories

  • yea the town brought me here so what? its a damn good movie with damn good music

  • this just changed my life.

  • Is his bottle of Jack called Jolene?!

  • damn song gave me chills. just awesome.

  • Holy Shit

  • this is not a rebel song....this is jolene bloody jolene

  • Amazing song, favorite musician. I can relate alot to this song!

  • the man is a legend... top singer / song write... love this song.. means alot to me..

  • Well said.....sit back and enjoy a great song....

  • Arguing with senseless, spurious assertions amounts to little more than an exercise in futility when the forum is basically this; a tabula Rosa of commentary, lacking accountability and without discrimination with regards to who may post. People post the most vulgar, untrue, or inflammatory nonsense in these situations because, well... they can; not out of some underlying conviction. The most sensible thing to do is just enjoy a truly amazing song, and ignore the bullshit, I know I will.

  • @cameronCO22 Holy vocabulary, Batman!

You're right, though, no one wins on the internet...

  • @cameronCO22 i drink.

lol, that and i completely agree with you.

  • @cameronCO22 Your point would have seemed more intellectual had you spelled Tabula rasa correctly. :)

  • @cameronCO22 deep but contrived ...

  • This just an amazing song. I grew up an hour outside of Spokane. The song holds a special place for me.

  • Amazing musician. Listen to my song too. You can find it on my profile, thanks;)x

  • Wahnsinn !!! super lied mit weltklasse stimme :))))

  • I can guarantee that Ray wrote this song

  • Is it just me or did he look super annoyed at the beginning?

  • I love Ray Lamontagne. The only bad thing about this video is that it was done by American On Line. lolololololol. F**k Aol.

  • @rossenergy But hey, to make things even easier, the world came up with this cool group called the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). And what does ASCAP do? Holy shit, they keep track of things like copyright, who wrote what song, etc.

ASCAP has a handy search feature online; we pop in Jolene and guess whose name comes up? Well fuck me, it's Ray Charles LaMontagne! Wow! And it wasn't even registered though Sony - Chrysalis Music was the original publisher.

  • @chaisson21 your my hero

  • @rossenergy And even if your cousin wrote it right before Ray's album came out, in 2004, you'd still only have been like 9. Somehow I doubt a 9 year can really comprehend what an older songwriting is penning at any given time. Ok, so back to the Brad/Sony/Ray thing. If your cousin writes a song, sells it to Sony, and then Sony gives it to one of their artists to perform, chances are Sony will attribute the original songwriter. Because, y'know, they're Sony. Don't think they need to steal.

  • @rossenergy You first claimed that your cousin, Brad Sulfridge, wrote Jolene but Ray stole it. Then you said that Brad wrote it, and sold it to Sony. Sorry but you can't have both. If you cousin writes a song and sells it to Sony, and someone else plays it later on, that's not stealing.

Ok, then later you claimed that you watched your cousin write the song. Sorry, but that song was written in 1998, which means you would have been two at the time. D'oh, sorry rossenenergy, wrong again.

  • Sigh, alright I'm going to have to break this down here. And let me preface this by saying that I know I'm feeding the troll, I just can't take it anymore.

First off, rossenergy, I don't believe you. No one believes you. The most gullible 2 year old in the world wouldn't believe you.

  • Who wish they knew this song before the town because they've been missing out like me!

  • 75 people have never felt what it's like to be crushed. Lucky fools.

  • so that's how you say his last name....?

  • Every page has its troll it's just best to ignore them! Because they want attention! This song is awesome and i heard it before the town.

  • he stole the song from my cousin he is such an ass

  • @rossenergy if your statement is true, which i highly doubt it is, then im kinda glad ray stole it, cause i doubt your cousin or anyone else could have sung this song better than ray

  • @rossenergy

Ummm proof. I can say it stole it from someone I know also, but we kinda need proof. Like others have said its not really the words its how they are sung.

  • @rossenergy you are an idiot

  • Honestly.. i don't give a damn if he stole it.. he sings it better than anyone else ever could.

  • Lol this whole "stealing fight" is FUNNY. whoever this "rossenergy" is...wow. Anyway, if ray didn't write the song, this girls cousin would have pursued that issue after he DIDN'T WRITE IT.

    kthxbye.

  • amazing song but to sing with that passion after singing it a million times is whats up...thats whats what music is about/... fuck lil wayne

  • I wouldn't mind marrying him.

  • this is my song now :O)

  • so much better than zac browns version

  • whoo knew this song before the movie "the town"

  • @jesseM456 who cares cuz we all love it now!

  • @jesseM456 Who knows of the movie "The Town?"

  • @jesseM456

    I did! :)

  • @jesseM456 I have never even heard of the movie. I have been following him for years as he has grown in New England into now his current status as a recognizable singer/song-writer known nationally.

  • @jesseM456

    me

  • @jesseM456 And me.

  • @jesseM456 what the fuck is the town?

  • @jesseM456 i did :-D Such a great artist... <3 "it's been so long since i've seen your face, or felt a part of this human race..."

  • @jesseM456 i knew it after the town. but i never saw the town so yeh.

  • If you love great songwriting like this, check out this band called Seraplane. I'm trying to spread the word for them, so if you get the chance search them on youtube!

  • HIPSTER. BEARD.

    Good song though.

  • @EmeraldFlowsion62 hipster? Ray ain't no hipster. Ray is too fucking awesome to be a hipster.

  • what is the difference between stealing and covering a song?

  • @TheReverendJohnson in a cover you would give rights or royalties to who wrote it, luckly this kids just a troll and ray wrote this

  • Oh I was hoping it would be a Dolly Parton cover

  • @Snutih Me too. But this is sure nice.

  • I wrote this song.

  • this is amazing..

  • Rossenergy, go use your energy for some more useful than hating and ranting about your cousin.. Maybe use your energy to shop at ross? What a name

  • I wish I could delete all of these ridiculous comments (arguing on YouTube?! Really?!) This is a great song. I like the Zac Brown version too.

  • out of all thses ladies, jolenes the most beautiful

  • What?? The song... or the fact that you have nothing else to say??

  • @rossenergy Man, I used to love this song. Then I found out that your cousin wrote this song, and Ray stole it. That is a goddamn travesty. I'm going to burn all my Ray mp3s now, and get a Casting Crowns tattoo, because, while they suck, they don't steal. DO you think the tattoo would look cooler across my chest or on my face? I vote on my face.

  • @chaisson21 you actually listening to a 15 year old girl with no proof. Who's tendency is to troll and lie? Don't burn your stuff it will be a regret.

  • @TheAray6 Too late. I downloaded a program that said it would burn all my music in a digital fire and it did (although now for some reason most of my others files were deleted too). Then I went out and got "Casting Crowns" tattooed right down the bridge of my nose. Right now as I type this I'm driving to the Pacific NW to try and meet rossenergy's cousin. I'm pretty sure he's the messiah.

  • @chaisson2 I Hope u r being sarcastic cuz if not u need turn the hell around, because u r end for a big surprise. I can't believe u are listening to a 15 yr old troll on youtube. And moonshinewilly is being sarcastic to rossenergy. Ray is a grammy winning songwriter, and that liers cousin don't work for no one. Ray is awesome.

  • @chaisson21 hey thanks for beliving me everybody eles just keeps cally me liar god bless you

    ps on your chest

  • @rossenergy: Just take your drugs and forget about your hangups. Ray Lamontagne wrote this song.

  • @chaisson21 Man, its called a cover, not stealing. IF you hate ray cause he's doing this song, you have to hate almost every artist ever.

  • @carson00042 it's not a cover. ray wrote this song.

  • @chaisson21 Put it on your chest... Thanx for believing me... you are pretty much the only one who does...

  • this makes me want to spit tobacco and rock in a chair

  • I'm no idiot, My cousin is no liar, your just so caught up in ur "Ray Worship" that you can't pay attention to what's right in front of you faces

  • @rossenergy sorry, its just a tiny bit hard to belive a random kid on the internet accusing a grammy award winning singer song writer of stealing a song from your cousins band, when you have no proof other than to take your word for t

  • How can a song like this where you can feel the artist pain ever get old? Ray I will be listening to this when I'm 90.

  • Which part of the song do I like the most?

I love the lyrics " a nine pound hammer or a women like you"

no I like the lyrics " held you in my arms one time and lost u just the same"

no i like the " I ain't about to go straight"

Ah forget it, I like the whole song!

  • I'm gonna stop arguing about this, so, bye bitches

  • @rossenergy Your "cousin's" band sucks. Just another shitty Christian band with no talent and nothing special about his voice. I doubt he wrote this song, and IF he did, Ray sings it 1000000000 times better than he could ever hope to. You're ignorant. Ray has talent.

  • Love the sound of that guitar - wonder what the mic is.

  • Just shut up and stop bickering about something that doesnt matter and enjoy the orgasm your ears are having by listening to this amazing mans voice..it doesnt matter who wrote the daggum song..just enjoy it.
