45 years today.......RIP Donald Campbell, a true brave British Hero! Excellent work from all the team that are restoring bluebird K7. Seeing it restored and running on Coniston once more will be a magical, spellbinding sight!
How much of the original boat can actually be salvaged and used in the restoration?Reminds me of a 200 year old historical house that was restored here in NY. As they worked deeper and deeper into the structure of the house they found almost everything rotted and ended up replacing almost the whole thing but the bricks and the glass in the window. It's like the old story of Grandpa's axe. The handle was replaced twice and the head once, but it's still Grandpa's axe. Good luck on a worthy project
Unlike many historic vehicle restorations, Bluebird will be almost entirely original. She's been rebuilt from every last scrap of her original pieces, and what you will see will be Donald Campbell's machine, not a replica nor a half and half job. Check out our website to see what we're doing in more detail.
I Believe Mr. Campbell is watching, and is watching proudly. According to media sources, not only are these volunteer completely restoring the K-7 , but are actually planning a 100 mph trial run at Coniston Water!!! Long live Bluebird...And long live her legend.
It's an instrumental version of "Speed me towards Death" by Rob Dougan. The non-instrumental version is on the Furious Angels album, I don't know where they got the instrumental version from.
Absolutely fantastic! I was born in 1970, I never saw K7 Bluebird run. Campbell represents an old school British hero, in the same vane as Guy Gibson, Douglas Bader & Johnny Johnson- 'Grit yer teeth & go for it balls out!' Campbell was fiercely patriotic & massively brave- a truly GREAT BRITON! Total & utter respect for that man. I cannot wait to see K7 restored as an example of superb British engineering & a fitting tribute to one extremely couragous British hero- DONALD CAMPBELL CBE......RIP.
Donald Campbell= Amazing. I've been to Coniston and on Coniston Water! Truly amazing but so sad to see a legend die instantly. But it's good that the Ruskin Museum has a whole section on him. Donald Campbell, rest in peace
As a Lancastrian I was tremendously impressed with the achievements of the courageous and talented Donald Campbell who chose to take on such an awesome challenge on one of our lakes, and in a boat built within the county too. It's brilliant that the Ruskin Museum at Coniston has got the accommodation for Bluebird. May he rest in peace.
As somebody who lost a parent, I'd know I'd want my mom back if she was lost on a lake, and the fact you guys took the time to find him and bring him back for a proper burial for his daughter makes you true heroes wit hearts of gold.
We only have one past, lose it and it's lost forever. Most of the time. This video shows that fate sometimes smiles. It's so wonderful that the K7 is being restored, not sure about the cutting things up to repair them, but I guess that's what it takes. The diary mentions unspecced mods (such as enlarged air intakes) - I wonder how such mods affected K7 and if those contributed in any way to the disaster.
I need to mention that the one of inspirations behind recovering Bluebird and Donald Campbell was the song Out Of This World by Marillion. Check out the song accompanied by documentary and newsreel footage that is also up here on YouTube.
Yes, the wreck of K7 was recovered in 2001, and is currently being rebuilt. Donald's remains were also recovered in 2001, and were laid to rest in Coniston.
Awesome, great vid. Keep up the good work guys. For anyone interested, I met Bill Smith five years ago, when I interviewed him as part of a project I was doing for my Meida degree at University.

I saw K7 when I was a child.
When Campbell reset the World WSR record in Australia K7, on a truck, stopped outside my primary school and we students were sent out to see it.
I always wondered why Campbell didn't return to Australia to attempt his new record after his success here previously.

Great video and great project - what music is in the video?
rlangham12 4 years ago
The music is the instrumental version of 'Speed Me Towards Death' (appropriate but entirely coincidental!) by Rob Dougan.
