I don't get how Freddie was able to do all those gigs with misdeveloped chops, if that is even a word? He was awesome, but with all the playing he's done, don't know how he got to that level without injury earlier. Today's trumpeters, the pros, all hit double c's with relative ease i'd say. I'm a trumpeter, bottom line, the trumpet is a funny instrument.
Wow, now that I have watched this again with different ears, I realize that that was a good ass double c and that he kept it for longer than most people can keep a high e.
As much as I adore Freddie, this is what ruined his chops in the last 15 years or so of his life...he was so musically talented that he was just able to "Make things happen", even if it meant damage to his face...R.I.P Freddie Hubbard, my favorite jazz trumpet player.
I am not a fan of playing high nots what so ever but i like tasteful high notes just like this one... Maynard had some tasteful high notes as well as others who done it... but Arturo Sandoval??? Not a fan at all of his high notes they come at the wrong time. The on time I enjoyed that type from Arturo was from the albums he did in the 90's that won him critical acclaim.
This is just my opinion others may think differently and I respect that.
@boricuatrumpet69 I've noticed from "my " experience that there are a lot of trumpeters that can hit them high notes all night but can't take a solo for squat... to the trumpeters out there... what are you concentrating on when you practice??? Personally i contrate on endurance flexibilty and when i do the soloing stuff i think melodically and conversationally? But that's me... thanx
I love Maynard but he is not in the same league as Freddie, who was my friend. 1st he played Calicchio's great horn. two when it comes to range no one no one surpass Cat Anderson, not maynard, nor chase or even roy eldridge tops Cat in range. But as far as over all ability Freddie is the greatest better than Miles or Diz and smoother than than his idol lee morgan I love Freddie R-I-P
Cat Anderson had range but he really didn't have the best endurance, Maynard could play double C's all night and add in some triple octave notes and end it all on a nice full double F if they did hey jude, I noticed Cat anderson got tired in a lot of the videos I have seen.
I play a different instrument so the high note thing has no meaning for me. What does have meaning for me is the way Freddie and Woody developed intervallic ideas through chord progressions. They were true musicians and their influence and inspiration are still being felt...even outside of trumpet circles.
anybody that knows anything about jazz trumpet matter fact jazz in general knows that Freddie is among the elite and deserves not to be compared to others with totally different styles i.e maynard
Lol maynard ferguson did a lot for music, how many high schools and colleges did freddie play at, how many clinics did he do, I know Maynard did a lot, hundreds of high schools and colleges
selector, your criteria about what makes a player good is incomplete or perhaps flawed. Freddie Hubbard is universally acknowledge by many who are much more knowledgeable than you to be a great innovator of jazz trumpet. Its not about how high you play or how many clinics you do. Some of my best friends have played with Maynard's band. He was a sweet cat but even he would acknowledge Freddie's greatness. Good luck to you
Lol I was actually asking how many he did out of curiosity, and I do realize trumpet playing isn't all about playing high and i do know he was very innovative and he is good, what i was saying is that if you are going to play that high at least make it sound good, I have heard that he would hold on to cracked notes and play flat and then play sharp on one note, and I am quite young so I obv. don't know a whole lot yet but I was making a point
Just be quiet, he is really good, your not going to win, but I do get what your saying about freddie, your trying to say he shouldn't play high notes if he can't really make them sound good, but who cares Maynard didn't always sound good, they are both different styles anyway. Plus what if that was an off day.
Songs like primal scream and give it one and el dopa and songs like that are not pop and they require great skill I didn't mean freddie isn't good I meant that i don't think he is as good as everyone says he is
I don't think he is that good, he played good songs but wasn't good at them (my opinion) his c was a squeal, and he cracks it half way. lol its funny I heard he would crack a note and keep playing it wile the tone is still cracked
You don't get it, do you? Most of you don't. He's a much better player than maynard ferguson. Yea Maynard had the best chops in the world (and I mean that) but Hubbard sounds billions of times better. When did you ever see Maynard recording concertos? It's not just about the high notes...
Im not saying he isn't good and wayne bergeron and maynard are some of my favorites and they didn't just play high notes but I like to listen to it and it is fun to play
Of course it's not about the high notes, but for what the video was trying to show, that sucked. Bad. The video was about him holding a really pathetically supported note. I mean, props on hitting a double C and all... But that was not pretty, at all.
Haha, shut the fuck up, don't make shit up like that, I really doubt he went to Julliard and even if he did and did take it up an octave he wouldn't have gotten kicked out and would have played it perfectly you mother fucking piece of shit.
That is true. Maynard moved to America to play in Stan Kenton's big band and go to Juilliard. When he got kicked out of Juilliard for "bastardizing a masterpiece," he focused on playing with Kenton full-time.
I know many of those highschoolers to whom Maynard was a rock star and wanted to play like him.Today those guys are music teachers or pros playing both jazz and classical. You should check out Joey Pero's blog 1,2 and 3.He grew listening to Maynard went on to Juliard and studied with Wynton Marsalis then did a stint with Maynard's band.He just put out his first album , it's amazing!
NO NO, Maynard could do it all, he was admiered by all, and most were very jeoious of him. The complete player.Wow, what he could do.He was so amazing, so powereful, and then so soft.
Sure, sure. Whatever. He is dead now and has left no mark. No influence on music whatsoever. He had no contribution and it is for that reason he is not a great
Try "what music above the staff should sound like". There were extreme upper register players before him, but no one with the HUGE sound and insane control he had.
Just listen to him play "Maria", and then slap yourself for me. Twice.
Why are you all arguing about Freddie's high range vs. Maynard's? Freddie could do things MELODICALLY and HARMONICALLY that Maynard couldn't. That's what made him special. RIP Freddie
Every one wanted to ne Maynard, with that range and power, so soft and yet so powerful at ant time. They use to come to him( Miles Davis) and ask him to teach them as "He" writes in his book, MF HORN.There was just one Maynard, could do it ALL. Sorry Boys
There's an interesting interview on ITG Journal march 2000. Maynard talked about what he "teached" to Miles ("the feet and the stance are key of coordination of your entire body") and what Miles teached to him (a funny annecdot about the fact Maynard played to much the "tonic" during "Ole" cause he it was what people want : "The hell with them !
Miles was very disrespectful to most people, but not to Maynard, he asked him to teach him to play in the upper regester, but Maynard told him to stay down there, said he was not built for it.Maynard said in his book "MF HORN" read it.
In the same interview (you could find thin pdf on the web) Maynard said that Miles lended him, for a time, his "Martin Committee". They seamed to have mutual respect.
I'll buy the Maynard's book.
Talking Freddie Hubbard, he was also one of my favourite trumpet players. Strangly, few days before is death there's a long interview in "Jazz Magazine" (I'm french, it's a french revue). Hubbard sayed that he had still medical problems (mosty on one foot)but wanted to make a real "come back". RIP
Hey...what is hip? Wouldn't hip be something to each his own? I'm sorry to say that you're wrong about Maynard. Maynard had a lot of soul, but you just don't dig it. Which is fine. Freddie had a lot of soul, you dug it...but respect everybody's soul brother.
@mynamisdan yea i agree with you freddie atleast made an attempt to make the solo sound hip hwne playing high notes. I think maynard had the right idea of adding alot of great energy but his style was just not that hip because he was constantly just blasting high notes.
I feel very badly for Freddie because that high note crap ruined his career. He and Woody Shaw were the best and now Woody's dead and Freddie is probably all done in his own lifetime.
