I had two of them about 25 years ago. I remember changing the spark plugs and just by leaning on the fender it would dent. Very thin metal, scary thin. The ride was surprising, you had the impression of driving a much larger car. Oh and a landing like in the add? The car would have bent for shure.
Loved my 5. Had a 78. Had the little hood scoop on the back of the hood. In a traffic jam I could put it in neutral, open the door, and push it like a skateboard. Easy to work on the engine. Park it anywhere on the sub base. : )
Wicked commercial J Click my clip on Christian Danner in my channel – you have the chance to win really cool prizes like a F1 trip to Abu Dhabi or Wii from Nintendo.
I still drive mine 1981 4 doors Canadian version today with 228 k on it. Fighting/preventing rust is the biggest issue, otherwise it is so much more personable than the contemporary disposable pieces of sh..t sold by car manufacturers today.
I had a 1984 Renault Le Car while at college. It was terrible. 3 lug nuts on the wheels. Spare tire in with the engine. Death ride each time I went to school. The parts were never available.
The heating..died..and the parts..were available.. Smooth ride..accruate steering and a good feel for the road.. I drove this in 1988.. had over 300,000 klm.. on this.. Fun car.. a death car today standards..but a great university car..!
Because we have to Americanize every damn thing....I love my LeCar, but for sure wish it was called the R/5!!! In a perfect wold, I'd have a R/5 Turbo II and go crazy LeFast, but that car is another tax bracket!
My father had a Renault 5 from 1974 (yes, the very first version!) until 1992. Almost 20 years of loyal everyday service with no complains at all. When we bought our new Renault 19, we gave the R-5 to a relative who used it for countryside rides and it lasted five more years even with no regular mainteinance. I really miss it!
this was my uncles first car, but he had a Renault 5 turbo, my dad had the peugoet 205 turbo... they used to race... hahaha funny cars, its the sorta cars u dont care about when u damage them, cause french people damage their cars everyday parking, driving, and even while they sleep they somehow manage to dent them, but yet these cars are fun to drive.
Its a legend, the first ( introduced in 1974 ) modern hatchback, ellegant, populair, comfortable, and its a Renault so its cool.
Those days if you want a smal car you have to go to Austin ( old people and brake downs ) VW beetle with terrible traction and unpopulair by 1974, noisy and slow Fiat 127 ( but they were cool to )
Not to mention the turbo versions of the 5.
Appart for the bad quality steel the car was GREAT.
Man, does that make me miss my 1980 Le Car! The only car I've ever driven that more fun or more reliable is my '94 Nissan truck. I miss that old pile o' froggy scrap metal!
In light of the New Beetle, Mini, PT Cruiser, etc., I am surprised Nissan/Renault has not come out with a retro Le Car. Something French by design, but with Nissan running gear.
I had two of these, a 1977 "real US version" of Le Car (different from that in the video) and a 1981 4 doors, Canadian version bought new in Montreal. I sold the first one after 70 000 miles with tears in my eyes. I still drive the second one today with 223 000 km on it. Original engine, clutch and struts... I had to fight rust just above the back wheels. A wonderfull automobile way ahead of its time then.
I loved my TWO Le Cars. I traded in a TR7 that would stall in a puddle of rain. The salesman took me through a swamp in Santee, CA. After driving in the riverbed with 6-8" of mud, and over those concrete parking lot tire stops, I was sold. On the last one, I was leaning back to get some change out of my pocket and the screws that held the front of the seat to the floor popped out, ripping two holes through the bottom of the car while I went sailing into the back seat.
I had a 1980 Le Car prototype. The entire emissions control system had to be replaced every 6 months. I had to pay $ when the plastic milk jug that held coolant fell into the car's electric "cooling" engine and melted. The car wouldn't start below 30F and the 13" tires couldn't deal with more than 1/2" of snow. Also the horn and heater wouldn't stay fixed. Other than that, this was a great car!
Renault shot many car ads in the US for the French market, the car shown is a French market R5, not the US LeCar, the bumpers and the lights are the give-away. Great cars, a friend drove hers home after totalling a 1970s Caddy with it!
I bought one of these for 50 bucks and painted it up all cool with stripes and a number. Made it to the Alberta badlands and back through a snowstorm. Ran out of fuel on Jasper Ave....took a bus to get a can of gas....pumped the shit out of the pedal to get her goin again and a hose popped off. The LeCar caught on fire. I ran into a restaurant screaming "She's gonna blow!" Firetrucks showed up and doused the fire but the end result was only charred remains. Best money I ever spent.

@pascalcs I still have one and drive it, but I'm losing the battle with rust slowly. I now store it in the winter. How do you prevent rust?

@thedarkone2134 You can go to some body shop to get advice regarding rust protection. I hope this advice was helpful. Cheers!!!!

They did use the Renault 5 name for the first year (1976) in the US, but sales were pretty sluggish, so they came up with the "Le Car" name instead.
