  • Best Rush live album hands down!

  • Wow, that was a genuinely enjoyable five minutes. Thanks Geddy, thanks Massey Hall :-)

  • This is how a true musician values and talks about music. This is what we need more of in the world today.

  • Should throw some old stinky rugs up from petco for damping cause when I was there in 86 the acoustics sucked. But I love the kitchyness

  • Bastille Day is my B-day! I love that song!

  • @Yamasenshi joyeux anniversaire!

  • @Yamasenshi merci!

  • Thanks for this post.

  • Geddy Lee is still one the greatest and coolest bass players ever in music. RUSH RULES !!!

  • Geddy Lee and RUSH are MASTERFUL musicians, and wonderful people!

  • Just dont sit in the gallery - unless you amputate your legs before sitting.

  • What's the song at 2:26?

  • I played there last Wednesday !!!!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this!

  • Man, I wore this tape out when I was a teenager in the 80's. The version of By'Tor and the Snowdog is the best.

  • @bansheebot2 RIGHT ON I did the same NFW. this album was just pure rock n roll Raw yet superb Les Pauls Waylin Marshall Stacks Screamin Rickenbacker bass in Stereo. I bought the album when I saw the record cover because of the way the stage looked ..and thought these guys must kick ass ....and from Bastille day on it did

  • is it just me or does bastille day sound a bit like the temples of syrinx

  • Anybody know what song is at the beginning???

  • @aquaman1227 The song is "Bastille Day",from the album "Caress Of Steel".

If you get a chance, grab that album...great stuff!!!!

  • I forgot what the date was but I think during the counterparts tour. I was in the upper seats with a girl (who didnt want to sit through the melvins) and I could see someone threw a hat on stage. I got a bootleg video of the show and it shows it.

  • Wish I was there for the concert! Amazing!

  • what a wonderful man. i seriously recommend watching "beyond the lighted stage'. you get the sense that these three guys are genuinely really nice guys.

    long live rush

  • I'm 14 and I'm performing there with my 5 piece band who are all symilar ages , Ive been described as the next jimi Hendrix by many , and the band has been described as the next beatles, because we write our own music instaid of playing covers , were all really excited to be playing on the same stage as legends like rush , cream , bob Dylan , Hendrix ect :D

  • @13Musicmachine

    what's the band

  • It is their best live album, because they were not only spot on in their playing, but even added on certain things that made their songs even better. Their playing was heavy, raw, and honest, full of energy, yet they played with very very good quality without any over production. For those reasons it IS their best live album to date, and probably will always be. I know "artist" or perfectionist like themselves are very crucial about themselves, but really, it is their best.

  • happy 57th birthday geddy!!!

  • He looks like John Lennon.

  • you can hear the snare snap on "Temples..." if you listen closely

also a guitar string broke during the solo for "working man"

  • oh yes i remember Geddy gets mistaken from Ozzy

is this from "Beyond the lighted stage"?

also Mike Meyers brother was yelling "Nighthawks" during the album and can be heard.

  • is he ozzy?

  • I was there.Awesome concert.

  • @Mystashyft

    me too...absolutely fantastic !

  • @Mystashyft me to ... if it was the show that Max Webster opened ???

  • Geddy: "So I bought one ticket..." Oh my god this is genius! Thank god for Jack Bruce. Geddy woke up that day and we were blessed with Rush. I HAVE TICKETS TO SEE THEM IN IRVINE. 6th row baby! See you all there!

  • i remember that tour....the nosebleed section actually was named after that era. Snortlaughing at the 2010 Time Machine mass evian @prestige

  • Wow geddy looks more like a Man now a days, he looked way more ummm... feminine back in the day.

  • So was Geddy Lee's greatest influence Jack Bruce???

  • @GrungeRocker1000

yes. if you hear the goodbye album, you can hear Jack Bruce playing like you wouldnt believe!

  • What Paganini was to violin Geddy is to the bass ...A GENIUS!

  • @Ronbo710

keep in mind there chops got better with time.

  • beautiuful long version,,tell jack bruce to go doen to the polecat, tell Brutus

  • what a feeling of a life time ...

  • Its the same with me... I cant get any of my friends as excited about the Rush tour as me... there starting to flake on me. I hope they turn their attitudes around...I dont want to go to the show alone, but I will if I have to! Rush is the greatest band ever!!

  • @Cheese71 they flaked on me tonight, for example. The Documentary permiers and they are just last age sellouts, rather to see it when it comes out on pink risk.

i love the orange oil as it weakens with the sunlight on the plankton shure. As soon as the 'skimmers' gurgle their water with their corroded bottom lip, the're wont be Art. Ever. And the unheard Tree in a Forest Union is loud as sheppking foxhen Dogs. In the immortaL WORDS OF jAMES vcaRVILLE

  • ....I forgot to mention feel and atmosphere for the albums I mentioned. They really had a certain feel to them, and the whole atmosphere was sureal, and the audiences were great.

  • IMO, All The World's A Stage is one of metals or heavy rocks best 3 all time live albums, which includes Live Evil by Black Sabbath, & Live After Death by Iron Maiden, with The Live Gonzo album by Ted Nugent & If You Want Blood...by AC/DC as honorable mentions. These albums had the perfect balance of honesty, rawness, and quality & professionalism, and captured these bands at their primes.

  • It is their best live album, because it was not only captured them in their most powerful and energetic era, but wasalso their most honest of all recorded live performances while actually sounding pretty much on cue and professional too. Then to top things off they actually improved certain parts of their songs with either added on and really interesting and guitar parts that added depth to the mood, along with being heavier and faster. Hands down, ATWAS IS their best live album.

  • anyone know who opened up for rush at massey

  • @humanity6fl9

the opening act was "Max Webster"

anyone heard of LOCOMOTIVE GTO or BLOODROCK?

    Locomotive GT

  • @TEMPmichaelhansen -duly noted, thank you sir!

  • MY BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i cant find all the worlds a stage but i do have exit stage left which also is a kick ass live album

  • @zackjp

do yourself a favor and find it . It't's nonstop raw rock when they were at their hungriest . By tor and Snowdog with the extended middle is awesome

you may want to check out the bootleg, fifth order of angels for downlowd- it's also top notch hard rock

  • @pm3181 i try to find these things but i am not allowed to vancouver so the hmvs i am aloud to go to suck

  • Geddy Lee is my favorite bass player. Rush has so many songs with great melodic bass lines you cannot help but play air bass too.

  • CitySonicTV Great video, Geddy Lee is such a great spokesmen for this immortal rock band. He's exactly what rock should be, reverent and humble.

  • this is so rad.. but when is the rush movie going to be released???

  • What a guy! .. they're all so humble. Good to see :-)

I saw then in London for the Hold You Fire tour - it was a life changing experience.

I was living in Taiwan at the time. I heard they would play at Wembley Arena - so I sold my motorbike to buy the plane ticket and I was on my way!!

It was probably the best concert I've ever seen. The light show was amazing!

  • Great live rock and roll record. Working Man was incendiary. Priceless memories of that album and that era.

  • are those sun glasses ???

    they look awesome !!!

  • In my opinion I believe that All the Worlds a Stage is one of the best live albums. I am also partial to this statement because I saw this tour.

  • you too? remember that huge rain storm, the sky was black.some people said the world was going to end.We went to the first and last show.RUSH were amazing, the best part was that we were there for the recording of ALL THE WORLDS A STAGE,A major part of the history of RUSH.

  • Always has been my favorite live album! I know it affected many listeners other than myself profoundly so its amazing to hear about Geddy' s experience with the venue and recording. Good stuff.

  • The opening song Bastille gives you the chills Alex's sound is the BALLS Les Pau lMarshall stacks Rickenbacker stereo bass.PRICELESS

  • Geddy LEE = GOD of bass

  • Wrong..Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart..the three kings of rock!?

    long live the three kings

  • Geddy Lee Is God!!!!!!!!!

  • Always great stuff from Geedy Lee.

Myself, I've been to Massey Hall for the following shows. Anybody else out there attend any of these show?

Simple Minds - 1982 - New Gold Dream tour

    Ultravox - 1982 - Quartet tour

ABC - 1982 or 1983 - Lexicon of Love tour

Devo - 1981 and 1982 - New Traditionalists and Oh No, It's Devo tours

  • Geddy is one good-looking gentleman, I must say - despite him being 39 years older than me. XD I am a newly-born Rush fan, fifteen years old...and not ashamed to admit that! \m/

  • I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks that! ♥ I'm 14, there's about a 42 year difference there... :(

  • You are not the only one, my friend. :3 Call me crazy, but it's true. He stands out to me more than Alex and Neil, somehow. ^_^

Why wouldn't we see Mr. Lee as attractive? He has intelligence, talent, a love of family and love for his bandmates, and so much more than that. x] So what if he's way older? XD I don't care, I love him anyway! \m/

  • Why thank you :) And I quite like your logic!

  • And thank *you*, Miss Emmeline. x]

I find my logic to be flawless. Well, not necessarily flawless, because nothing is flawless. But...yeah. XD

I wonder what Geddy would think of this discussion. He'd probably be very flattered, but terribly modest; knowing how much of a gentleman he is. :3

  • XD Your logic is as close to flawless as I think anything could be, we'll just leave it at that ;) And I'm pretty sure you're right about Geddy once again, he'd probably be flattered and modest, but possibly also slightly disturbed... I mean, I think I would be if I were him. XD

  • Why, thank you for agreeing with my logic. :p I am certainly not flawless, I have never claimed to be. ;)

Hmmm...perhaps he would be slightly disturbed. But it's not like we are getting crazy, exclaiming, "OMG! Geddy's so freaking hot! Don't you think?!" XD We are teenage females, but we behave. ^_^

  • No problem! Yes, that's true, we aren't being rabbid or anything... yet. XD I have had conversations that go along those lines though ^^

  • True, true. With as much admiration and respect I have for Geddy and his bandmates, I would never become rabid. :p There's no place for that. I believe Geddy would agree with me on that. "Don't go crazy over me!" XD

All I know is that I could never have conversations along those lines with any of my peers; mainly because no one has any idea who the hell RUSH is. ^_^ It's a shame. \m/

  • Oops, too late for me there XD

It's so sad, I only have one friend who knows who the hell Rush is... and absolutely it's a shame. It will puzzle me forever how my peers can overlook Rush in all their glory!

  • Don't you worry, mi amigo. I do not care if you are late. :3

Shame, shame, shame. "Shame on you!" XD Anyway...I don't even know any pals of mine who would connect with me in terms of my "RUSH fever." :p I never asked, probably because my search would come up fruitless. :/

The person who got me into RUSH is my father, who has been a fan since the 70s. I've been a fan since November 2009 - or two months. Impressive, huh? XD He's the only one I know who will have a meaningful conversation. :3

  • Ha! XD

"Rush fever" sounds like an accurate term...

I've been a fan since about last November... right after the Snakes and Arrows tour. Such awful timing D: Oh well, that's so cool to have someone you know be a Rush fan... neither of my parents like then that much :P

  • Yes, I am now in my "RUSH fever." I have named it so because whenever I come into fascination with something, it will not leave my mind until it's indulged as far as it can be indulged. Hence I have a "fever." XD

If only we could have been born twenty, or even thirty, years earlier - when RUSH was in their prime. Not saying they are anything less than incredible now, but still. Dammit...Why do we have to be so young?! XD

  • XD I know exactly what you mean by "fever" like that, the exact same thing happens to me XD

I must also agree wholeheartedly with that- why did we have to be born into this frigging generation? D: Being born some thrity years earlier would have been btter for sure... I mean, I'd have liked to be around when Rush wore kimonos XD

  • It's good to know I am not losing my mind when I say I have a "fever" for anything, especially a band. ^_^

I KNOW! >:( What little "music" still exists in our generation today just sucks in comparison to the Rock gods of RUSH! \m/ And sucks is an understatement. :p

*Giggle* Yeah, like in the video where they played "Tom Sawyer" on Rock Band. Geddy: "Where's your silk kimono?" XD

  • Yes, I am also rather glad I'm not the only one who is that crazy. If crazy is the right word XD

  • Oh, believe you me: we are not crazy. It's one thing to be a little nutty, and a whole other thing to be insane. ^_^

At least we're not psychotic fanatics stalking Geddy at every available opportunity, or something like that. XD

*Then* we would be crazy. :p

  • *cough* Well, depends what you mean by "stalking" XD

  • *Giggle* Indeed, it does. :3

How do you define "stalking"? ^_^

*Long silence* Holy crap, I've got a weird mind! XD

  • I am not going to ask about what just passed through your weird mind XD Well, if by stalking you mean actually getting up early and following him around I am by no means a stalker! >.>

  • Yeah, it's best you don't ask. XD I am far stranger and crazier than you can ever imagine. O.o

Yes, that's my definition of stalking. If you and I were to get up early and follow him around, then we would be stalkers! ^_^ But since that is not our behavior, we may rest assured that we are not fanatics or stalkers.

    Or...fanatic stalkers. XD

  • Ditto XD

Alright, so maybe I'm not actually a "stalker"... but I would be if I could just figure out where he lives... <.<

  • *Giggle*

Yes, if you could figure out where he lives, I'd go along with you. But I think we'd stalk him in a good way, nothing perverted or anything. :p We'd stalk him because we're huge fans that would love his company. Hopefully. ^_^

Dude, if he were disturbed before, when we gossiped about how attractive he is, then he'd be twice as disturbed now. XD He'd be thinking, "I'm just gonna walk away now." XD

Seriously, how demented am I to think the way I think - about Geddy Lee, no less? :p

  • I will tell you if I ever figure that out XD But I'm afraid I didn't realise it was possible to stalk someone in a good way ^^ Lawl if he read this he might decide to like, move to antartica or somewhere not populated by psychotic teenage fangirls XD And believe me- you can't be nearly as demented as I am on that front. ;)

  • Yup, you can stalk someone in a good way. :3

If Geddy ever were to move or not be a part of RUSH anymore, the world might stop spinning for me! :[ But you gotta do what you gotta do to get away from psychotic teenage fangirls. XD

I'm not nearly as demented as you? Oh, really? Are you so sure about that? ^_^ If any of the three RUSH guys were to know what I thought on a daily basis, they'd start becoming afraid of their fans. ;p

We'll see about that. How demented are you, my friend? XD

  • I'll tell you this- I'm NOT demented enough to publish my demented thoughts on YouTube XD Thank God Neil, Geddy or Alex (particullarly Geddy ^^) can't read thoughts (as far as I know O.o) because if they could I think they'd move to Antartica and never look at a seemingly innocent 14 year old the same way again.

  • Hmmm...I see. XD

I am not that demented, either, so you should not worry about me...yet. ^_^

Indeed, we may *seem* innocent, but Geddy, Alex and Neil have no idea. :p That's probably for the best, however. XD

  • My dear old papa first got a RUSH album in 1976 - when they had reach their first high of success for the album "2112." The album he had, and blasted on his sterio system, was "All the World's a Stage," the live album Geddy discusses here. Quite coincidental, eh? XD

He has loved them ever since. I'm not sure about my mum, though I would think she knows them from being with my dad for 20+ years. So...yeah. ^_^

But DAMMIT! Why are we so young?! D:

  • Massey is indeed the best venue. I saw Steely Dan there 3 weeks ago, fantastic show. Third row, centre aisle. Brilliant. Magical.

  • Nobody rocked Massey until you ,Geddy. ATWAS is the best live rock album, ever. Fuck that!

  • ANSWER: I was almost 14 years old at the time. I had longer hair then, much skinnier and was wearing a Kiss T-shirt at the concert if I remember correctly. So long ago.. I am 47 now with less hair, more weight but I will still listen to Kiss.

  • I was at the June 12th show. For the encore they played "Best I Can" with Geddy using his teardrop Precision Bass. I was standing at the front of the stage. At one point I leaped up into the air right in front of him with my hands punching the sky. Geddy looked right at me and leaned into this awesome move and the photographer snapped a photo which made it into the album's liner pics. I will never forget that moment now captured in history.

  • Wow! What a story. I feel happy for you.

  • how old are you?

  • @1qaz4u Awsome !!! Which "Kid" are you? Pic on the upper left or flip, 2nd down from upper left ?

  • @1qaz4u very lucky for you, I was in presto tour in 1990 in allpine valley in the front row and I spend the same with Geddy and Alex greetings from madrid-spain.

  • @1qaz4u

mike meyers brother was there screaming "NIGHTHAWKS" and it can be heard on the album.

  • @1qaz4u

you should make a video of that I have the vinyl.

  • @1qaz4u

if you take a look at the 2 record set, he must have been using 2 basses for those 3 days...because the book visions shows his precicion bass before it was made into a teardrop, but you can see both basses in the photos on the fold out.

  • @1qaz4u

    That's cool.

  • Geddy Lee, you are my bass playing hero!!!!

  • wow geddy is a really nice guy i hope i could meet him

  • Great vid. Awesome actually. Thnx.

  • This is top notch. Thanks to whoever posted this.

  • Geddy lee is god

  • Comment removed

  • We'll have to agree to disagree then.

  • I took my 4 year daughter and 6 year old son to my 53rd show, and we all sat in the 2nd row. Alex actually yelled at me for letting my son's ear plugs fall out during the show. and he pointed out his barbie dolls to my daughter.. Hilight of my rush experiences.. no doubt.

  • Great to see Geddy so at ease. Have LOVED this band since my boyfriend took me to see them in 1980 (I think). I still wear that shirt to every tour since then, and wave to Geddy - imagining he actually recognizes me. (Just wishful thinking) Have taken my kids to the last two tour shows. Thanks RUSH!

  • Best live recording (as far as audio) = Exit Stage Left. Best live video = GUP Tour & Rush in Rio...This is one of those bands that is very tough to get a decent recording out of. IMHO Vapor Trails wasn't recorded properly...

  • That is the story of my life... I've seen rush 54 times. But I've bought 150+ tickets to those 54 shows, and I've been paid back for maybe half the "gifts" i've given my unworthy friends. lol.

  • 54 times?! Holy crap! I`m so jealous!!

  • Wow, Geddy described the last 5 years of shows I experienced. None of my friends really wanted to go see RUSH, I went alone to their last show at Summerfest! It was worth the $800 for 2 tickets I bought! LOVE RUSH more than they'll ever know!

  • Yo Ged....I had a similar experience in '76 buying a solo ticket to see my favorite band..."Rush"...at the :Kiel Opera House"...in STL....

  • Awesome piece of film, thanks for sharing!

  • 2:33 LMAO

  • I would agree that ATWAS was my favorite live album. It was so raw. it sounded like they were playing inside your livingroom, Live albums at that time seemed to have an 'intimacy' to them. Live albums nowadays, even though I like them, are so much more polished, maybe even too much.

  • A most excellent band and "the boys" are all great.

At the R30 show, I realized that the only reason I had not seen them all 30 years was because I was 8 when they started. From the time I hit 16, I have been to every tour and have always wanted to go see them in Toronto.

Even in my worst seats, it was the best show ever.

  • Rush is the best band EVER! I am so in love with Geddy...

  • またツアーに行きたいな。

  • Good to know I am not the only nut who will go to a concert alone. Love you Geddy! Love you Rush! Rock on!

  • What do you guys think????

I bet......they have a VIDEO of that show! That will be just the coolest when it gets released!

  • Nice to see Geddy remembering the early years and the importance of the place for Rush as a newcoming band then. Great band, great music, great members, one of a kind.

  • Ah Massey Hall...awesome. Saw Rush on both legs of the Snakes and Arrows tour and man they rocked. Rush fan for life!

  • Long Live RUSH !!

  • Egad, but I do love Geddy and Rush. Best band ever, and holy crap is All the World's A Stage the best live album ever released. Oh, now I'm waxing all geeky.

  • Vive RUSH!!!!

  • ya I'm a bass player have many cover vids here at youtube. I've been playin Rush for 33 years. This was the first taste of Rush for me and still love jammin to it.

  • Los mejores la verdad, la pena es que no vienen a tocar a ESPAÑA.

The are the very best,BUT I AM SO SAD, BECAUSE THEY HAVE NEVER COME TO SPAIN....

  • I think the first show I saw at Massey Hall was John Entwistle (bassplayer of the Who). He had a solo thing going in 1975 in a band called "Ox". THE LOUDEST SHOW ON EARTH! Even the headbangers were shouting for him to turn it down. To which other headbangers shouted back, "Up your f%$# #$%!"

  • Geddy has been my hero since 1981. Rush is not just a rock band, Rush is rock!

  • My first show was seeing them in Cleveland, opening for Aerosmith (toys in the attic tour) on the 2112 tour in 1976. That show was from this tour. I haven't missed a show since. Long live Rush!

  • Started off with Roll the Bones when iwas bout 7 myself, and went from there. Best decision I've ever made!

  • my story of becoming an official Rush fan is similar to yours. the first Rush show I attended was in 1990 and I believe it was the Presto tour. I would have been 7. the first Rush recording I ever owned was Roll the Bones on cassette. not counting the Counterparts tour, I have seen them every tour. wouldn't miss them for anything, and they're still my favorite band! :D

  • my first two cd's was in my dad's collection back when i was 11 or so, they were moving pictures, and 2112.

  • I am only 14, and my first rush album was... well I first listened to some select songs but my first real album was permenant waves... I love rush. I saw them play live in pheonix, 3rd row, and I got Alex Lifeson's Pick!!!

  • welcome to the club kid.

  • very cool! were you able to make it to both legs of the Snakes and Arrows tour?

  • Unfortunately no. I saw them on the second leg. At the time of the first leg I was unable to see them, which really sucked because they came to my city on my birthday... -.- When I did see them though it totally made up for not seeing them the first time they came.

  • Rush is the best progressive rock band ever! Lime Light is my favorite song! And of course best album Moving Pictures.

But of course ... This concert in '76 "Rush ★ 2112". I've missed something !

    Five stars ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

  • Exit Stage Left was my first and still my favorite. Especially the Jacob's Ladder through Xanadu passage, man talk about tying some great music together.

But I will say that ATWAS is definitely second.

I can never get enough of these guys.

  • why does it seem like everyone's first album was ATWAS? usually for most of us noobs it was moving pictures

  • I heard em all from Rush to Roll the Bones, but my first cd was Hold Your Fire, back in 96 when I was 6 years old...

  • when i first got hold your fire i was confused cause i wasn't sure if it meant like "hold your fire" as in dont shoot, or hold your fire as in like dont drop your fire, actually i still dont know

  • As you know, Neil loves wordplay, and a lot of their album titles have double meanings. I believe this one does too.

  • Absolutely it's both! The "secret sauce" in Neil Peart's lyric cooking, found in most Rush songs.

    Hold your fire --

    Keep it burning bright

    Hold the flame

    'til the dream ignites --

    A spirit with a vision

Is a dream with a mission

  • all of those meanings apply. if you look at the themes of the different songs on that album, you'll see the phrase "hold your fire" take on different meanings from one song to the next.

  • i dont think so, where does the phrase hold your fire come in on time stand still?

  • It doesn't.

  • ezactly

  • no, I didn't mean that the phrase "hold your fire" literally showed up in every single song on the album.

  • my first Rush CD was Counterparts. it was Christmas of 1993 and I got my first CD playing home stereo, and a handful of CDs to go with it, including Counterparts. that was a really good Christmas!

  • My first was Exit Stage Left, then Signals. Rush was my first concert. San Diego Sports Arena '84. Golden Earring opened. Both bands were awesome. I saw Rush on the next three tours as well... Oh and I learned to play the bass.

  • Man, that's awesome. I can't imagine what it would have been like to see them in 1984,
