The Caps will have a great team for a while I believe too. I hope to see many more Pens vs Caps playoff matchups in the future. It was such a thrilling series until game 7 really. Back and forth, lead changes, 3 OT games, just can't ask for much more in a series.

I agree Crosby didn't win the cup by himself. That's crazy talk in hockey, for the most part. But he did score 2nd most behind Malkin, and he took on Detroit's big defensive first line in the cup finals (notice, Zetterberg didn't have many points either), leaving Malkin with leftovers. He didn't win it single-handedly, but he had a big part, for sure.
The goals that Crosby scored were a result of him sitting by the net and waiting for the puck to hit his stick. Ovechkin creates for himself, and he does it with defenses game-planning exclusively to stop him. The reason the Caps lost this series was an embarrassing lack of defense, which Ovechkin can't really do anything about. The Caps allowed 50 shots a game by the end of the series.

You apparently know more than the Redwings coach, because he put his best two defensemen and his top defensive forward on the ice to shadow Crosby in all 7 games of the cup final (they let their 2nd unit go against Malkin). A lot of attention for a guy who just sits by the net.
This argument is completely ridiculous. When Crosby joined the league, the Pens were absolutely terrible. They won 22 games his first season and he still scored 102 points AS AN 18 YEAR OLD. Even this year he had no consistent scoring winger on his line. His linemates have included the likes of Colby Armstrong and Pascal Dupuis. Not exactly Backstrom and Semin, are they? Ask any GM in the league who they would rather build a team around....not a single one would choose Ovechkin over Crosby.
i dont hate on Crosby for the position he plays i know hes a top 3 center out there i just flat out hate his style of play, hes a #3 center to me behind Datsyuk and Richards and you could throw in Thornton as well if you wanted but Crosby will never be my #1 Datsyuk is just too good both ways best 2 way player out there and makes it look easy. Richards is a true hockey player very good 2 way player can hit can fight can do it all.
If you're looking at the all-around center, I wouldn't put up too much of an argument that Datsyuk is on top. But do you realize the guys you're talking about are almost a decade older than Sid? I really think he'll get to that level in the next couple of years, and at that point he'll be about 25 years old. So when it comes down to it, I'll agree with you're original comment, but you gotta give Sid props for being in the debate considering he just turned 22.
also throwing Backstrom in the mix would also make sense as far as centers go. he could be a real shocker this season. he so far has been a 80PTS type player but i see him getting more playing time with Fedorov and Kozlov gone and getting high 90's to low 100's in PTS
well from his rookie year idk, idk if Malkin is on that line anymore or not. but as of last year he tends to work well with Kunitz and Guerin whenever they are match up. i mean i know hes a good player skill wise, he makes a lot of people look good and is a very good set up man i just dont think he is the best out there. and i cant stand the way he plays the game like a pussy.
My last comment was in response to someone who said Ovechkin's had no support, and Crosby's been playing with much better players. There's a reason it's been Pens and Wings the last two years. Crosby/Malkin and Datsyuk/Zetterberg are not only superb offensive talents, they are great at covering in their own zone, something Ovechkin is lazy with and never does.
I understand that a lot of Caps fans did not tune in until Ovechkin was drafted, but the Pens were just as bad. They were both in the basement of the league, that's why they got the Ovechkin's and Crosby's in the league.
i have been a Caps fan from the age of 5 [when i started playing\went to my first game] and the Caps have a pretty good pair with Backstrom and Ovechkin.

I don't know about the Caps winning the cup this year... they might be a bit too green still. But the fact their young guys, like Ovie, Semin, Green, and Backstrom (all under 26 years old with over 70 points this season) are showing skill and poise beyond their years. That gives me optimism that we will be an elite team for years to come.
i agree the caps need some better defense. theyre giving up too many odd man goals. however, varly has only given up 11 goals in 8 games and has the best GAA out of any goalie in the playoffs. it was theodore who played game 1 in the rangers series.

It is hard to say that but i said it. also, crosby did have three goals he just couldnt find anyone else to help him out. Crosby, as voted by the players, is both the biggest diver and the biggest whiner in the league and quite frankly neither category is even close. He was complaining to the refs that the fans threw too many hats on the ice when Ovechking got his hat trick in this game. I mean, really? crosby can kill penalties but what is the point when you have jordan staal and craig adams/pascal dupuis. Maybe ovechkin should stop killing penalties since their PK was in the bottom half of the league this year. Ovechkin does not backcheck...he thinks standing in the defensive zone is playing defense and its not. you have to stay responsible of the man you are supposed to be checking. Malkin, crosby, staal all play defense 10x better than ovechkin.

If you actually watch the games, Ovechkin isn't a PK guy. He was put in this game on the PK in desparation, and he coughed the puck up which resulted in a goal. And pass? Not in OV's vocabulary. He shot nearly twice as much as the 2nd goal scorer in the league. Hits? Sure he hits, even his own teammates at times. But unlike most big hitters, he never, ever answers for his hits with fists.

I agree Crosby didn't win the cup by himself. That's crazy talk in hockey, for the most part. But he did score 2nd most behind Malkin, and he took on Detroit's big defensive first line in the cup finals (notice, Zetterberg didn't have many points either), leaving Malkin with leftovers. He didn't win it single-handedly, but he had a big part, for sure.

The goals that Crosby scored were a result of him sitting by the net and waiting for the puck to hit his stick. Ovechkin creates for himself, and he does it with defenses game-planning exclusively to stop him. The reason the Caps lost this series was an embarrassing lack of defense, which Ovechkin can't really do anything about. The Caps allowed 50 shots a game by the end of the series.

This argument is completely ridiculous. When Crosby joined the league, the Pens were absolutely terrible. They won 22 games his first season and he still scored 102 points AS AN 18 YEAR OLD. Even this year he had no consistent scoring winger on his line. His linemates have included the likes of Colby Armstrong and Pascal Dupuis. Not exactly Backstrom and Semin, are they? Ask any GM in the league who they would rather build a team around....not a single one would choose Ovechkin over Crosby.

If you're looking at the all-around center, I wouldn't put up too much of an argument that Datsyuk is on top. But do you realize the guys you're talking about are almost a decade older than Sid? I really think he'll get to that level in the next couple of years, and at that point he'll be about 25 years old. hell it if wasnt for the diving crying and cheap shots i wouldnt have a problem with Crosby but even you a pens fan must be sick of it. you know that the stuff Crosby does doesnt belong in the NHL, and you know that 3\4th's of the time he gets "hurt" he isnt really hurt...he just doesnt know the meaning of hard-nosed hockey. hes got skill but this extra stuff he does is the thing that people focus on, if would just play hockey people would respect him more.

you gotta think about this, who are people gonna favor more, they see Ovechkin score a goal sliding on his back or fallling forward and then they see Crosby diving to get the call, and then punching players in the back of the head, and jumping on players off the face off....this has nothing to do with Crosbys skill he got skill his style of play tho is wrong. its just ashame that he plays that way.

If Crosby "isn't that special", how was he able to be the youngest player ever to score 100 points? Gretzky didn't do it. Lemieux didn't do it. Howe didn't do it. The youngest in any major sport to ever win a scoring title: Jordan didn't do it. Gretzky didn't do it. Not that special? Who were Crosby's linemates? Scrubs, mostly, yet he's good for 100+ 3 out of his 4 seasons. Ovechkin wishes he could pass like Crosby, or score goals by hitting the puck out of the air. Or win a Cup.

I don't think anyone here is trying to say Ovechkin isn't a better goal scorer. Of course, his shooting percentage sucks, but he still has a great shot. That doesn't make him the best overall player. I would rather have someone who doesn't lead the league in giveaways, and is a team player.

Yeah if he's going to give the puck away as much as he does, be highly predictable, and only play on half the ice. I'll take the unbelievable talent as well as solid defensive player, any day of the week.
There's a reason it's been Pens and Wings the last two years. Crosby/Malkin and Datsyuk/Zetterberg are not only superb offensive talents, they are great at covering in their own zone, something Ovechkin is lazy with and never does.

i have been a Caps fan from the age of 5 [when i started playing\went to my first game] and the Caps have a pretty good pair with Backstrom and Ovechkin.
Backstrom in my opinon is just as good as Crosby at being a center.
Ovechkin plays D when he has to play D the Caps coaches want him to hang at the point and stay open because he is so deadly with the puck, but when he has to he will race back and play D. but dont fault the guy for doing what his coaches ask of him.

Ovechkins dancing around with his puck puts him into trouble often. Lol, Pens play a very different game than Caps. Ovechkin is your only major scorer and everyone depends on him to score. For the pens, they know that Crosby will be absolutely watched on the ice, they can afford to let other players score. Ovechkin is very exciting but you cannot fault Crosbys playstyle. Wins know he's good; look at the way they stick close to him. the best defensive players in the game atm are so scared of him.

bottom line...ovie is the best player in the league. The truth is, if this were the "old" NHL, Crosby wouldn't stand a chance. All of his goals come from within 6 feet of the net and 5 years ago he would've been knocked out for standing around the net like he does. Everyone of Ovie's goals was pure skill either beating the goalie one on one or in his third goal beating a Dman and the goalie. Not saying that Crosby is a bad player because he beat my team already, but Ovie is freakin' ridiculous.

I don't know about the Caps winning the cup this year... they might be a bit too green still. But the fact their young guys, like Ovie, Semin, Green, and Backstrom (all under 26 years old with over 70 points this season) are showing skill and poise beyond their years. That gives me optimism that we will be an elite team for years to come.

i agree the caps need some better defense. theyre giving up too many odd man goals. however, varly has only given up 11 goals in 8 games and has the best GAA out of any goalie in the playoffs. it was theodore who played game 1 in the rangers series.

It is hard to say that but i said it. also, crosby did have three goals he just couldnt find anyone else to help him out. I Think that even tho caps fans do not like crosby that they too have earned a certain amount of respect for him.
