who's painting at 2:47...I'm blown away. Course Nat-tre is the cat's meow and the Tube x U helps keep these cosmic jams alive and swell. it;s such a gas to go searching...never know what one might find. this night I've hit pay dirt, big time. it's feels good to smile. PEACE...
I remember me and my sister did skits to like 4 of Nat's songs for our parents...this was one. lol We pretended she was in a resturant ordering, and I was the confused waitress xD Ah memmories.
The story behind the song is that a young man was taking his lady out on a date, and brought her to a very fancy restauraunt to impress her. But once he got there, he realized that he had no hope of paying for the expensive prices. So rather than admit he was too poor to afford it, he ordered something that didn't exist, and when they informed him that they didn't have it on the menu, he had a way to leave without losing face.
I must have played this fun 78 at least a few hundred times since I was a child in the 60s. I've heard several jazz related artists try their take at this tune thru the years...and every time they leave out the best part: Nat's closing, spoken line which is a riot. Even Diana Krall decided not to use it. A pity.
I had a lobster roll at a restaurant here in Santa Monica last night. Awful. Cost $22. Should've ordered the frim fram sauce with shefifa on the side...
LOL...they are nonsense words, that is, made-up words. It was quite common back in those days in jazz to "scat" or make up "sounds" to accompany the music....it's still done today even.
@adamax i have a feeling he's alluding to something sexual... or at least having something to do with the opposite sex. i'll probably get some thumbs down for this comment, but it was quite typical for artists to use word-play in place of something that they weren't allowed to sing about in those days...
@adamax they're actual foods! i saw frim fram sauce on a menu the other day. my great grandma used to sing this and she explained it to me once but i forgot what they all consist of
@adamax its just the frim fram sauce, with that wonderful shefifah on the side. I like more shefifah myself but never would have it with out frim fram sauce on the side.
ha since todays MLK day i felt like listening to black music for some reason....and now i cant stop singing it........everyone around me is like "WTF right voice wrong skin"
One of Nat's busiest years! More than 40 songs recorded, this one in October 11, 1945)

The timing, the phrasing, the musicality of King Cole and his sidemen are breathtaking in this little novelty piece.
