The actor is Martyn Ellis and he was ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. As I recall there was not a butt in its seat at the end of this number. Hands down the crowning glory on what was an overall wonderful revival. One of the great memories of that trip to London!
this is the first west end musical I saw and it is my all time favourite number EVER. The video really doesn't do it justice - it was so amazing live, they got a standing ovation and we were all clapping and cheering for like 5 minutes! Love it.
i gotta disagree too.. if you dont like it they not even singing it for you they singing it to people who like it its not for the people who dont like it.,right?
@oreohope ooohhkayyy, don't go cray on me. you do know that that is how Nicely Nicely is played - he isn't supposed to be extremely confident , but quite a nervous character. so YOU shut up unless you know what you are talking about.
@oreohope you are actual nuts! if you know he is supposed to be like that then why did you complain AND don't tell me to "leave you alone"! you shouldn't have commented on this video - which OBVIOUSLY means you are open for conversation, so you kind of need a grip
Nah, doesn't work. This misses the point of the scene. It's about reforming and being good (for a bunch of gamblers, anyway.) Check the movie version of the scene out. It's about restraint, not dancing around.
love the energy in this version of sit down, can't comment on the other songs, but I love the way this is done, it's too easy to get snobby about how musicals and songs "should" be performed, but at the end of the day, if its entertaining, who cares?
Something about the videos fromt his production just don't do it for me. It is undeniably a *good* production, but there's a spark that's missing. Broadway musicals are inherently American, and "Guys and Dolls" is a quintessential Broadway musical. Something about that style just doesn't translate across the pond.
I probably feel the same way about this as the Brits feel about us Yanks doing Shakespeare. It's good, but its not like we do it.
Agreed. As a Brit myself, I feel it suffers from an overly campy/spritely attitude to a song which is at its heart about addiction. A similar problem is suffered by the majority of performances of the number "If I Were A Bell" where the actress plays it as 'silly drunk' rather than 'joyous, liberated woman'. In truth, the musical should be as Kenneth Tynan put it - "the Beggar's Opera of Broadway".
I went to see this version. It doesn't look as good on here, but when they did it in the theater it was just the best thing I have ever seen in my life. It was so much fun and had so much energy! I don't know if you can trump this. Truly incredible. Everyone was on their feet.
I really don't mind it slower. I think they add so much more musically and vocally to it, and its really quite catchy, that the fact that they altered the original music is not at all what came to mind when I first saw this. It's a great rendition, I like it just as much as the 1992 revival version.
Though, I do miss those high sopranos in the beginning choral melody. That's probably the only thing I feel they shouldn't have altered.
Pardon my stupidity, but is this a dvd release of the west end cast or something? My favorite broadway performer is in it, and if it's a dvd release I'm hoping I can catch a glimpse of him in some other clips. xD
As far as I know, sevenstartotheright, it's not a DVD release. Sadly. I think they just filmed it for TV promos, etc, and for the website advertising the show. I wish it'd been recorded for DVD - it was a really great production. When I saw it, this song got a standing ovation :).
This was OK, but not nearly as much fun as the version Walter Bobbie did in the 1992 Broadway revival or even the version Roland Rusinek did at the American Musical Theater of San Jose in 2007.. Looking forward to seeing the 2009 Broadway version in April.
This version is trumped by the current NYC version of it. I saw it the other night and it was simply AMAZING, Tituss Burgess sang it and they even gave Mary Testa, general Cartwright, an awesome solo in it. You havent seen Guys & Dolls until you've seen the current NYC cast.
This is one of the greatest American musicals EVER written and I think the Brits did a darn fine job with it.
I did see the current version on Broadway two weeks ago and I have to agree with the previous post--unbelievable showstopper ! Titus Burgess and the rest of the cast gave it an modern edge especially with General Cartwright's naughtiness without taking away from the genius of the piece. Go see it if you can!
isnt the broadway show closing 3 months earlier, i think the reason guys and dolls did so well here was the hunks they got to play sky, like nigel harman who at the hight of his fame was britains sexiest man, iv got a picture of as sky as my background on here plus him in guys and dolls the havana clip is good, yes i am a little obsessed byt this show it come from working on it it didnt help that he was in the cast either.
I absaloutly LOVE this version- I think it's amazing how they've played around with the song. This is very different from the other ways it's been done yet it still has the same energy! Me likey very muchly x
totally not a fan of this version. I'm currently playing nicely right now in a regional production in northern california. This nicely honestly has a really bad accent and doesn't sing as strong as nicely should. plus the slow tempo really killed it.
Awesome! Encore! encore! Best version I have heard! Amazing, I love the soul mixed with the swing style music. And I just can't stop listening, "sit down, sit down you're rocking the boat...!"
the best version of this song some of the other parts of this show aren't as good as other versions but this song is the best version on YouTube or what i've seen.
good, but a bit overdone in my opinion. then again, this is not meant to be seen on video, but live...so i'm sure it seems very different to those who were fortunate enough to have seen the stage production.
