OMG im sorry but i was LMFAO this hole video "use common sence while jacking up" XD good video and i actually have a question. i have a mustang and its lowered and its about time i change the oil but the drive way on my house is elevated so is there a special kind of jack that works on up hill kind of drive ways, i feel like the jack with tires on them will just slide down and the one with out wheels i feel they tilt to the side and fall.
@shadow1up NEVER jack up a car on uneven or slanted surfaces, period. If you have to work there, get ramps you can drive the car up on, they don't cost much.
some how i knew that i even stop my brother from doing that once, i just wanted to be double sure. i have some ramps but my car is so low i dont think my car is going to pull it off without the front bumper getting damage. idk i guess ill risk it and do it on the side of the street
only problem with those notches are the fact that it can ruin the coating of paint of seam sealer on the rocker pannel, then it will start to rust. Those things that look like frames on mono body cars have always worked for me, most solid thing.
@scottykilmer Where do you put the Jack Stand/where is the axle what does it look like? And, how do you stay safe while putting the axle under the car and taking it out?
@TheDudeman619 you move fast putting it in and taking it out, that's how to be safe. and you put the stands on any hard metal surface like rear differential or a thick metal cross member of the frame.
I was always taught that when jacking up to change a wheel, it's always safer to place the spare / removed wheel on it's side and under the side of the car. In that case if the jack fails the car falls onto the wheel and stops major damage that would be doe de to the car hitting the floor.
keep up the good work scotty kilmer!! good jobs!! i been watching you for a year and a half!! thanks for the vido'e and help samuel harris!!! peace!!!whooooraaah!!!!
the jack that came with my car basically slides into a thin notch underneath but surely if i put the trolly jack on this will prob bend so where would i jack from?
@Dominic83189 you shouldn't, but if you have to, to the end that slants less and put big boards behind the tires that sit on the ground so it doesn't move. Scotty
I wonder if my Del Sol has those notches for jacking it up. The yard I bought it from promised me a jack, but I ended up buying one of those cheap scissor jacks. I don't have enough space to carry around one of those full size jacks if i have a puncture. I sure hope I don't get a flat while on a steep hill/ driveway or something.
I remember a kid from high school that was working on his car and it fell on top of him and he was killed.I wonder if he was using jack stands.I all ways think about that being under a car
@ArmenianSOADfreak Yes, because there are so many guys pretending to be "mechanics" these days who know very little. It's seen as a low status job, so you often get the dregs of society having such a job. Due to low pay and crappy working conditions in many cases, the situation gets even worse. So if you find a good mechanic, stick with him. they aren't easy to find these days. Scotty
My driveway isn't completely flat and me and my friend were jacking an old 97 galant up with a scissor jack, and we winded up accidentally jacking the car up on the soft metal area on the outside edge of the designated jacking points with the notches. Now there is a big dent in the bottom from where the little jack was. Is this purely cosmetic damage or did we ruin a potentially good car?
There is a place in the back of my car where there is a thick looking beam / rail that spans between the two rails that run along the length of the car in the back.... Is that what they call the "cross body member"? And is that a good place to place the jack? I think Scotty places the stand there at the end of this video
I can't seem to find a straight answer when it comes to "where to place the jack". The pinch weld bending was also my concern about using floor jack.... I changed the brakes on my car for the first time a month ago and used my scissor jack thats in there with the donut. I kept thinking to myself "if I'm going to start doing stuff myself on my car I gotta get a hydraulic floor jack". Then started looking around under the car for where I could place the floor jack.... The pinch welds are already
Hydrolic jacks can bend the pinch welds. The pinch welds are only designed for a scissor jack (factory jack). When jacking up a car, I recommend using the tow hooks instead. Place the jackstands on the pinch welds instead.
@AGreedyTree AH, but many cars no longer have tow hooks on them anymore, including this vehicle. I used to always use tow hooks whenever possible to jack em up, but they seem to be disappearing in many cars these days. Scotty
@aeligos It could be that, but drive it first, when you jack up a car, the susp often gets tilted and driving will normally make it go back level.Scotty
Scotty, Not fair I bought that same low pro for my old Dodge Ram from HFT for $80 your lucky you got it for $60. Also do you think that jack will jack up a 1984 Dodge Ram 1500? I have a lot of front end work to do. Thanks in advance.
LOL, I once borrowed a pair of drive-up ramps from my gramps one time to do my oil change, went too fast and my car ended up on top of the ramps, bending them. They certainly weren't steel for sure LOL. Of course this was all when I had my very first car and was just learning...
Is it safe to be dropping a 3000lbs vehicle onto a jackstand like that? I mean slowly dropping the vehicle i can understand but just free fall dropping her onto it looks like you can bend something
@Liamautomechanic I got em from harbor freight tools, they are made in china but they last for years with no troubles if you keep em out of water. Scotty
Hey scotty on a Grand cherokee, where are the Jack points at ? The manuall says you can put it on the axle tube but i dunno about that...
I've been doing alot of work to it myself recently like tire rotations with a torque wrench, and last night i replaced the visouc coupler in the Transfercase with it still on the Jeep... (that was hard lol... took me like 6 hours to do because on the Jeep there is no room) I put my Jack on the frame.. Is that ok ?
Would that work for all unibody cars? Wouldn't that flat top floor jack flatten those notches? For my 97 Nissan Sentra, I don't risk it. What I do is jack up on the centre bar below the engine or the bar between the rear wheels, then place two jack stands on either side below the special jack point notches. My jack stands have groves that fit into those notches, not the flat top jack stands in this video.
@metricmine Na, the notches are hard, they are made for those stupid little jacks they put in the trunk with the fake spare tire. but your system works too. Scotty
son of a bitch, i JUST bought a jack stand and all the things to change my oil. and returned them not only because i had no space but because i realized i needed a jack after the jack stand and had no more money to get it.
@alundrasrt I agree you never know when that jack stand is going to give some are just cast iron... a deffect or crack could occour and the stand could snap I always prefer solid steal and always inspect prirror to use. Leaving the jack up is almost just comon sence unless its in the way for the task at hand.
I see it all the time. people dont properly place the jack or set the hoist arms. Somebody else in my shop lifted a grand am and didnt use the extensions or place the arms in the right place, and it cracked the plastic rocker covers and caved in the front fender, preventing the door from opening
It may seem like suspenders and a belt, but I always chock two of my wheels as well. A lot of emergency brakes aren't calibrated right, and I never want to find out the hard way. One day a few years ago, I had a scare under a vehicle that was up on ramps. I bumped the gear shifter on the automatic transmission, and it slipped into neutral. I felt the vehicle shift and lurch, but fortunately it didn't roll down onto me.
I watch every video as it's released and must say I enjoyed this one too. I noticed most of the videos "star" a toyota car (Camry actully). Why is that?
Hey Scotty. LOVE your videos man! I got a quick questions. Where can I get some info on doing an engine swap? I have a blown rev 2 5SFE. I could use any help I can get :) Its not really worth the swap unless I do it myself. I know you advocate DIY.
Have you done a swap on the Ceilca? How would you rate the difficulty? Any quick tips?
@Cfernando88 Engine swaps are Big jobs requiring engine pulling hoists and the knowledge of where every singe part goes when you put it back. Google it an see if anyone has some decent videos, I'm old and don't swap engines anymore. Scotty
@wangbungal Either put em on a land doll tow truck, you have to remove drive shafts so yo don't ruin the trannies, unless they are standard trannies, then you can just tow em with all the wheels on the ground if you want. Scotty
Scotty, about a month ago I came home to find my neighbor trying to change a tire on a Corolla.. front pass side had the caliper sitting on the concrete.. the jack had shifted. I quickly got my big jack, go to help the situation only to have the vehicle shift and almost fall on my big jack. I assumed he had pulled the parking break.. My fault for not checking (and I know better!) plus he was new to driving and had no clue what he was doing. Had him on his way in 20 min tho! Live and learn
Love all of your vids Scotty! I once had a self-professed "former NASCAR pit crew worker" named Crazy Joe swap out a tire on my 97 Astro van.. I was on the road in AL and in a pinch. He liked to drop cars off the jack fast "NASCAR Style", he said, with a nostalgic twinkle in his eye. He was a character... The point in all of this is I got about a mile down the road and realized that I had a 6" crack in the center of my windshield. Life lesson learned, always let 'er down easy. :-)
@scottykilmer i know that im just asking if a 20 dollar walmart jack is reliable they also have jack stands but i sure as hell wouldnt trust em we had their car on their jacks stands when changing the tyre and even with bricks behind the wheels and the Ebrake on it still rolled backwords fell on the jack and knocked down the jack stands
Hey Scot, Make a Vid about "Testing" a transmission. What to listen for, various methods to test the Transmissions strength "brake+gas/Hill climb, etc" Teach us what to look for when we're buying Used, or if we're hearing something odd. Take care.
Thanks for posting this, Scotty. Everyone, pro or amateur mechanic should watch this even if just for a refresher. A friend of mine who was a mechanic for a local dealership for 15 years was helping a friend of his change his transmission filter at his house. The friend used a scissors jack, the only jack available at his friend's house, to jack up the car. The jack slipped while he was under the car and was killed instantly. Now, I always wait until I have the right tools for the job.
Yep, first time in my life that I jacked up a car was in Feb. I put it 'under' the Camry, lifed it up on the jack, then BOOM! I blew a hole in the floor of the driver's side well.
Would have been helpful had you posted this advice for nim-rods like myself earlier.
(It's ok, the thin metal bends back real easy and you can cover up the hole with a patch like I did)
@CoolasIce2 Yep, I was. I always take my car in to a pro. But, this time my wife hit the side of a wall and knocked the tire off the rim. I had to change the tire by lifting it with a jack. To save $ we canciled our AAA membership. Hey, the economy sucks and everything is getting more expensive.
Ya live, ya learn, and hopefuly nobody gets hurt. :)
Most budget shops don't even bother positioning the watchamacallits under the lift points when lifting the car. If you look underneath most cars you'll see sections of the floor pan dented inwards because of this. If you take your car to one of these budget shops make sure the mechanic positions the lift under the proper jacking points. These guys think that all car owners are like most people who don't care what happens to their car's under chassis.
Thanks Scotty, I needed to know this 1 month ago, my jack went through the soft metal, boy did I feel like a fool, it really hurt me to that to my faithful Honda Civic. Thanks for the videos they have made me a better home mechanic. Have you made a video on drum brake replacement?
scotty, what is your reasoning for pulling the parking brake and lifting the ass end of the vehicle off the ground? they cancel out. i am not going to let a 1 penny per hour chinese guy ruin my life with a harbor freight jack. i prefer USA made.
@fordbroncodave The other side brake is holding it as you jack. I've used those chinese jacks for 3 decades now, they actually outlast the super expensive american ones. some chinese stuff if bad, but not these jacks. Scotty
@julianbell90 setting the park brake (the rear wheels) and lifting both the rear wheels off the ground means nothing. the brake is non functional until one or both wheels are on the ground
@fordbroncodave When the parking brake is activated, the rear wheels will no longer move, but activating the parking brake then jacking the car up (raising both the rear wheels) isn't (or shouldn't be) the way you'd keep the car from moving. Instead, this is to lock the rear wheels so when you try to take any of the rear wheels off... the wrench or driver (more so the wrench) will not cause the wheel to turn making it near impossible to loosen the nuts. When doing this, BLOCK THE FRONT WHEELS :P
Well Done Scotty. So many young folks out there need to see the basics like this. There just are not enough of us old timers to show these young folks how to do it right.
your videos help make the world a better place dude!

The center front and rear tow hooks that most vehicles have is another great point for jacking up on.
This allows you to lift the front or back at once so you can slip both jack stands under without moving the jack twice.
It's highly recommended to use two jack stands and not just one for stability purposes.

Thanks man!
Cfernando88 10 months ago
@Cfernando88 Engine swaps are Big jobs requiring engine pulling hoists and the knowledge of where every singe part goes when you put it back. Google it an see if anyone has some decent videos, I'm old and don't swap engines anymore. Scotty

@Cfernando88 go watch "erickthecarguy" here in youtube. he does some engine swaps

can you make videos as well how to tow a 4x4 vehicle scotty thank you!
wangbungal 10 months ago

my neighbor bought a jack at walmart for 20 bucks is it trusty enough to change oil with?
Matthew55904 10 months ago
@Matthew55904 I would jack it up and put jack stands under the car BEFORE climbing under there. Scotty
scottykilmer 10 months ago
@scottykilmer i know that im just asking if a 20 dollar walmart jack is reliable they also have jack stands but i sure as hell wouldnt trust em we had their car on their jacks stands when changing the tyre and even with bricks behind the wheels and the Ebrake on it still rolled backwords fell on the jack and knocked down the jack stands
Matthew55904 10 months ago
Scotty, when are you gonna come fix my car :p
xdivisionx 10 months ago
Hey Scot, Make a Vid about "Testing" a transmission. What to listen for, various methods to test the Transmissions strength "brake+gas/Hill climb, etc" Teach us what to look for when we're buying Used, or if we're hearing something odd. Take care.
sacr3 10 months ago
Good tips. I try to leave the floor jack under the car along with the jack stands, so there will be 2 or more pieces supporting the weight.
CoolasIce2 10 months ago
Thanks for posting this, Scotty. Everyone, pro or amateur mechanic should watch this even if just for a refresher. A friend of mine who was a mechanic for a local dealership for 15 years was helping a friend of his change his transmission filter at his house. The friend used a scissors jack, the only jack available at his friend's house, to jack up the car. The jack slipped while he was under the car and was killed instantly. Now, I always wait until I have the right tools for the job.
otakop67 10 months ago
Yep, first time in my life that I jacked up a car was in Feb. I put it 'under' the Camry, lifed it up on the jack, then BOOM! I blew a hole in the floor of the driver's side well.
Would have been helpful had you posted this advice for nim-rods like myself earlier.
(It's ok, the thin metal bends back real easy and you can cover up the hole with a patch like I did)
Trapster99 10 months ago
@Trapster99 Buddy, consider yourself lucky. You should let people who know what they're doing work on your car.
CoolasIce2 10 months ago
@CoolasIce2 Yep, I was. I always take my car in to a pro. But, this time my wife hit the side of a wall and knocked the tire off the rim. I had to change the tire by lifting it with a jack. To save $ we canciled our AAA membership. Hey, the economy sucks and everything is getting more expensive.
Ya live, ya learn, and hopefuly nobody gets hurt. :)

Hey Scotty, can you do some motorcycle repair videos?
classikz 10 months ago

@dureyes Yep, "Changing brakes shoes in your car" on the scottykilmer channel on youtube. Scotty
scottykilmer 10 months ago
scotty, what is your reasoning for pulling the parking brake and lifting the ass end of the vehicle off the ground? they cancel out. i am not going to let a 1 penny per hour chinese guy ruin my life with a harbor freight jack. i prefer USA made.
fordbroncodave 10 months ago
@fordbroncodave The other side brake is holding it as you jack. I've used those chinese jacks for 3 decades now, they actually outlast the super expensive american ones. some chinese stuff if bad, but not these jacks. Scotty
scottykilmer 10 months ago
@fordbroncodave Your not trusting the jack with your life..., It's the stand your trusting. Don't even get under a vehicle without a stand.
TRcustomengineering 10 months ago
@fordbroncodave they cancel out?
julianbell90 10 months ago
@julianbell90 setting the park brake (the rear wheels) and lifting both the rear wheels off the ground means nothing. the brake is non functional until one or both wheels are on the ground
fordbroncodave 10 months ago
@fordbroncodave When the parking brake is activated, the rear wheels will no longer move, but activating the parking brake then jacking the car up (raising both the rear wheels) isn't (or shouldn't be) the way you'd keep the car from moving. Instead, this is to lock the rear wheels so when you try to take any of the rear wheels off... the wrench or driver (more so the wrench) will not cause the wheel to turn making it near impossible to loosen the nuts. When doing this, BLOCK THE FRONT WHEELS :P

@julianbell90 do you understand?

Well Done Scotty. So many young folks out there need to see the basics like this. There just are not enough of us old timers to show these young folks how to do it right.

Do you have to torque everything to spec or just trannys and engine parts?
F15H0N 10 months ago
@F15H0N I only use torque wrenches on special stuff like that, been working on em long enough to know how tight to make most stuff by hand. Soctty
scottykilmer 10 months ago
Why not use the jack under the cross member and then use the jacking point to put the jack stand? Supporting on a center jackstand sounds iffy
vgs8606 10 months ago
@vgs8606 Because the jack stand won't fit on that crazy jacking point on a toyota, it's too small. Scotty
