After the Great Earthquake, hotels were built to house the people of San Francisco. These mostly became permanent housing; historic old buildings that are usually quite nice inside. You passed A la Turka, which is great... perhaps the best Turkish restaurant in California.
That hotel is a rip off and it's got beg bugs now, I live 3 blocks from it, YUK! I stepped in s***! Stay at the Twin Peaks Hotel it's $50 and it's safe at night.

I actually work in the TL with an afterschool program and a lot of the students and their families live in this neighborhood so please stop trying to assume that every person who lives in this neighborhood is "ghetto." There is more to the TL than just the homeless and crime. Spend more time in the TL and you'll realize they are people who are trying to make it a better place.
SF is awsome...I work there delivering oxygen....its a georgous city..but the tenderloin, mission, hunters point, sunnydale....good god! night and day...but those are small districts that are drouned out by the larger scale of the city thats awsome.

It helps to be born and raised in SF, it's a hard city for some people to plug into. Never been to NYC, but I wouldn't be surprised if I was disapointed. You are partially right but check out hunters point & bayview district. Those areas are just as bad if not worse but they get less curiosity because they are not downtown.
Why would you pay $100.00 to stay at the motel 6 in the TL ? I say check out Chestnut st , Union and Filmore, the Marina, Columbus and Green. Why would ANYBODY be a tourist in the TL. I stayed for 2 weeks in tenderloin and found it less intimidating than my hometown of Glasgow, Scotland. In the USA you get mugged for money and property, here teenagers slash and stab strangers for a laugh. I loved all of SF and want to go back to the Opal Hotel on Van Ness and Geary. The loin seemed perfectly safe to me with great bars and helpful people.
Anytime you're in Scotland get in touch. Glasgow is actually very friendly if your'e a visitor with loads to see and do but alcohol and knife culture amongst the urban young is rife. Whenever I go abroad, I always check out the risky areas. Its how to see the real deal. Walk with confidence, dont look lost or like a tourist and most 'bad' places are fine. I lived there, more than once. It is a troubled place, because nobody cares about what is happening - and to gentrify it will displace more people who have nothing. Not everyone is rough, etc. Children live there. You are on one edge of the district - an uglier side, but it is not very dangerous. It is the at the bottom of the hills- Russian, Nob - the poor always live at the bottom.

You are partially right but check out hunters point & bayview district. Those areas are just as bad if not worse but they get less curiosity because they are not downtown.

Why would you pay $100.00 to stay at the motel 6 in the TL ? I say check out Chestnut st , Union and Filmore, the Marina, Columbus and Green. Why would ANYBODY be a tourist in the TL. They have to pay me to go there, and I've seen some shit. Pregnent hookers addicted to whatever just about to pop and all I can think is for that kids sake ,I hope it doesn't make it. I stayed for 2 weeks in tenderloin and found it less intimidating than my hometown of Glasgow, Scotland. In the USA you get mugged for money and property, here teenagers slash and stab strangers for a laugh. I loved all of SF and want to go back to the Opal Hotel on Van Ness and Geary. The loin seemed perfectly safe to me with great bars and helpful people.

Anytime you're in Scotland get in touch. Glasgow is actually very friendly if your'e a visitor with loads to see and do but alcohol and knife culture amongst the urban young is rife. Whenever I go abroad, I always check out the risky areas. Its how to see the real deal. Walk with confidence, dont look lost or like a tourist and most 'bad' places are fine. Still have your attenae switched on though. Stay safe and free in Canada. God Bless Michelob beer!!

I lived right where you were and basically all over. Next time you get a chance try to find "The Palace of Fine Arts" in the Marina. It looks like Rome and is all that is left that once the entire Marina district looked like that, and is gone. The Palace is all that's left. 1915 circa. Also try Twin Peaks. : ) Cheers.

I lived there, more than once. It is a troubled place, because nobody cares about what is happening - and to gentrify it will displace more people who have nothing. Not everyone is rough, etc. Children live there. You are on one edge of the district - an uglier side, but it is not very dangerous. It is the at the bottom of the hills- Russian, Nob - the poor always live at the bottom.
