  • This is the most well polished, humble, lovely acceptance speech. He's soooo cute!

  • I love Derek jacobi..... I remember watching this when I was young (probably too young but my mum thought it was so great) the actors in it were amazing, him, George Baker (who has just died) Brian blessed etc... amazing......

  • Oh my GOD......that's Princess Anne giving out the award!! :-O

  • One of the most well-deserved awards ever given for any acting performance.

  • @Escul1960

That, and Robert Donat's Academy Award for "Goodbye Mr. Chips."

  • His acceptance speech is of a truly noble and civilised quality; with a modest, natural eloquence that is magnificent.

  • he is amazing in i claudius!

  • Classiest acceptance speech I've ever heard

  • sweet i didn't realize he was in gladiator until i saw him with the beard

  • @turnagainoutlaw Ha neither did I. I even watched Gladiator a few days before I, Claudius and didn't even notice they were the same person.

  • Wow, the makeup people should have got an award as well - I wouldn't have recognized him as Claudius

  • what a beautiful speech.

  • Derek is so humble and very modest. As he is so cute and still is. Has that baby-face!

  • What a speech!

  • He could read a grocery list and make it sound like a sonnet.

  • Watching this when I was 14 years old is what began my life-long love affair with British television (I live in Canada). I absolutely adored this series and eagerly awaited each new episode. It is still one of the best series I have ever seen, and Derek Jacobi was just brilliant in it., as he is in everything I've ever seen him in. In my opinion, the greatest living actor!!

  • Derek Jacobi is simply the greatest actor ever-and a brilliant person at making speeches.

  • The "night of the stammerers" quip was a reference to the fact that Brad Dourif had won the BAFTA for best supporting (film) actor for the stammerer Billy in Over Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

  • Brilliant speech especially "night of the stammerers."

  • Typical, sublime Sir Derek, humble and awesome at the same time.

A wonderful find Rosa, and a bit melancholy too...For some people time should pass more slowly.

  • Took Claudius from a stammering 17 year old to an aged, cynical Roman emperor. Derek Jacobi was brilliant in

this role. He even looks like the busts

    of Claudius I.

  • Well deserved honor for a fine actor giving a brilliant portrayal. In fact, the series' entire ensemble gave terrific performances which merit recognition. Among these: Sian Phillips as Livia, Brian Blessed as Augustus, George Baker as Tiberius, John Hurt as Caligula. Also the many supporting players all contributed their best to an excellent series.

  • That was a great speech...so humble. It was cute at the end after they played the clip of him in Claudius, he was bashful & bowed his head. What a sweetie! :)

  • he deserved the award. amazing actor, and such a great character he portrayed.

  • what a windbag

    good actor

  • Classy CLASSY man.

  • Wow thanks for posting this. Loved Derek Jacobi's very articulate speech. And he was also rather cute back then :)

  • Is that Annette Crosbie hosting?

  • its a shame people can't be as wonderfully articulate and well spoken in acceptance speeches nowadays. just contrast derek jacobi with the swearing morons we have today.

  • @ravaldo11 I agree completely. What a class act! I loved I Claudius, and Sir Derek has been one of my favorites ever since.

  • @ravaldo11 Christoph Walz gave a beautiful acceptance speech for his role in Inglourious Basterds. Worth watching!

  • what an omen... "666 views".

All my idols are so old, like 40-50 years older than me.. In a way that really sucks, but in another that's what makes them my idols, isn't it. Bittersweet.

  • When I was 12/13 my idol were Cary Grant & Sean Connery, so, don't worry, it's a common desease ^^

  • I can't believe he didn't win an Emmy for Claudius. I Claudius nonetheless has a big following here in America. Don't want you Brits to think us yanks are a bunch of rubes.

  • I'm Italian, but glad to know you're not a bunch of rubes ^^ ...these days I feel like we are a bunch of idiots, here in Italy and Europe...but that's all another story :))

  • @rosapurpurea I love Italians!

  • Hi Rosa

    It's been a while

I've got this on the disc and noticed that he didn't muddle his words at all (which in his excitement he could have done) in true Jacobi tradition. Bless him.

Look in on your vids often thank you for bringing him to YT

    Lee xx

  • You're welcome! Thanks for your kind comments!

He's really cute and his voice's always a thrill to me...and he's clever too...I love clever men!

  • Well, I guess we all do. ;)

  • An insightful watch! I could listen to Jacobi talk all day anyway, thanks for this, much appreciated!

  • This is wonderful! He looks so cute. I like his shirt, I have a similar one. ;) And his voice, when he speaks... I'm melting.

Thank you so much for posting this! :)
