I remember Virgil Fox with a great fondness, as my college roommate and her brother, a Curtis organ student, were very deep into the Virgil Fox "Heavy Organ" experience. Bach's music is universal and Virgl Fox's goal was to remind the world of that. I'd love to see someone carry on his legacy; to make the music of Bach, and/or music of the classical world more accessible and desirable to the young.
This May 3, will mark the 100th birthdate of Virgil Fox,,so I want your help to get something done. I pushed hard to get a stamp to commemorate him shortly after he died,,but was told tho he qualified,he needed to be demised a "few years". So he has,SO please contact the Postal company and push to get a Virgil Fox Commemorative stamp. Thank you all very much.I don't like to ask for anyones help, but I do need you!
In lookiong over the Virgil Fox Cronology of events I must tell you that one should be aware of errors that would not exist had the authors bothered to ask me. The first performance by me and my Revelation Lights was not in SanDiego, it was in Missoula. The cronology does not inform on all the changes in his Management very well, who he interviewed to take over his concertising, and who he considered to be the best new manager after he disengaged his second last one.
"one of his old warhorses"? seems like a left-handed compliment. NO ONE ever played it better. poor virgil. he was the "mario lanza" of the classical organ world, except his talent and training could not be denied by the "know-it-alls". his "unforgivable sin" (like lanza) was loving the music so much that we wanted to bring it to everyone, including "joe average". isn't it ironic that today, we give the likes of andrea bocelli unrestricted license to do the same thing? think about it...
Merry Christmas everyone,,and thanks for your contacts with me this past year. Keep them comeing. Keep Virgil's torch alive and enjoy the videos with his work that this site provides. Thanks for making it available to everyone.
Blessings. David Snyder Lumierist, Heavy Organ Productions
we have wonderful recordings that are exact in every detail....thats fine...but I am from the Glen Gould perspective on this...lets bring new light on works and have fun engaging with the notes...I am not a fan of Virgil but who could not warm to his enthusiasm and I love the way he chants out B A C H at the end.....a true showman for Bach and the organ
@gcl82003 I am happy to see Glen Goulds' name in print in your note. He was simply the greatest wasn't he? The last time I saw Glen was at Virgil Fox's last concert at Saint Pauls Bloor Street in Toronto. Glen slipped into the back after the concert started and slipped out at the end of the last encore. He extended his hand to me as he walked quickly past and kindly touched my arm as he passed by. My,,we still miss him so much don't we?
Does this really want to make you get up and dance? GOOD,,we wanted you to,Virgil,,me,,and Mr Revelation (on the screen) and me thinks Bach would want it to!
Your definition of the purist would not fit Virgil. E. Power Biggs who was compared with Virgil at their time as being his equal. E. Power played every note the way the printed page was written. Virgil detested that and said that Bach would have love his interpretation of the Jig. Blessings to you too.......
I believe David, that if possible, you should place the full video of the gigue fugue on video for us. I believe Virgil was a genius on organ as he proved in this piece.
The purists would not agree, but who cares what they think. Virgil could outplay any of them if he wished.
I find it hard to believe that after all these years, watching Virgil still leaves me feeling that I witnessed a great moment in time,, history being made, even though I performed Revelation Lights with him at the concert . And to think there are still wonderful folks out there that remember Virgil and me and even now are so kind, leaves me humbled indeed and grateful. You made up our wonderful audiences. You made it all worthwhile Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
the video is only a brief part of the video document wich included interviews with DAVID SNYDER, and VIRGIL FOX and additional live footage. Peraps I'll place the entire film on line if there is any interest. David Snyder Revelation Lights
What a great time we had performing together in our Heavy Organ concerts, and Mr Revelation,my mascot never danced better than at this one. We had other names for that organ other than "Black Beauty"
Thank you so much for your kind
words for Virgil Fox. Enjoy our performance. God Bless
I saw and heard Virgil Fox when I was a kid and I've never forgotten what an awe-inspiring experience it was...partly responsible for my life-long career as a church musician. And yes, he DID bring "classical" music into the lives of many who might otherwise never have learned to enjoy and appreciate it. Apart from all that, I REALLY love the Gigue Fugue and have been working on it for YEARS. :)
@horndiapason I just saw your note and wow,,you made my day because Virgil would be so very happy his music inspired you in some way,,I am too. Great going and I hope you still are a church organist.
Yes, it was "B A C H". I saw the original broadcast. Fox played another piece during the program in which Bach used notes that spelled out his name ("H" being the German letter name for the B-natural, and "B" their name for our modern B-flat). So the chanting was partly alluding to the "Bach" code.
Thank you for posting this light show! It is so much fun to watch, and it gives me an opportunnity to see what I was,nt able to travel to. Many thanks again; I am most grateful!! What fun!!
thank you for your great comment. I am so sorry you could not get to a concert. IO hope the little video clip makes up in some way. Thank you so much for your time to write.
Blessings my friend from me and I know Virgil would send his as well.
WOW! Crazy! Perhaps I can see why the purists hated him - but what an entertainment! What a crowd puller! Just what people need today again rather than just stuffy purism. And even this on an electronic that sounds of clearly dated technology! All power to Virgil!
Virgil Fox hubiera sido un buen integrante de cualquier banda de rock, seria la contra-parte de alguien como Eddie Van Halen, se imaginan? una banda rockera con Fox en los teclados? no mames...!!!!!!

@billynoful To me a Purist is any musician who plays his music from the heart and soul,,not only from the printed page. Blessings

what are they screaming?
Sounds to me like: B A C H, doesnt it?
I dont think anyone on earth now is able to do something like this, to inspire thousand of young people of the majestic beauty of Bachs music

Fantastic!
Way to go Virgil!
Too bad Joe could not keep his lights in time with Virgil.
Should have turned them off if he couldn't keep up.
Bach's Gigue Fugue is so joyous, rhythmic, complex, compelling, uplifting and fulfilling.
Some claim this is NOT Bach.
Who else could have written this?
