@graf0rlov I would love to get a copy of this wonderful soundtrack the music goes with the documentry very well please let me know as soon as you can thank you!
@LordoftheKaty I kind of hated it that Burlington Northern and Sante Fe became a joint venture I sent email to BNSF .com and asked them why they became BNSF and all that right after UP took over the other railroads !
It's not about unloading speed, but more about convienience. Industries don't need to be right by a railroad to reap the benefits of shipping by rail.
Waiting for Claude Akins to show up? LMAO! Man that was great! I thought he would at the lumber segement for sure torwards the end.
All jokes aside its interesting to see just how they did it and got it done on the railroad back in the day. Heaven forbid you step off a piece of moving equipment to throw a switch now. Thanks for uploading this mwmnp! :)
I like this video work from the 70s. My Garden Railroad is a tribute to Burlington Northern, 1970-1995. Gives me a chance to see how they operated pre 90s (when I really remember the Big Green BN). Great quality on this too.
I live About 50 yards from a class 2 railroad and they have 5 or 6 trains a day go by and I love it! The horn doesn't bother me, It is the law to honk at the crossings. A train may take anywhere from 3 minutes to 9 minutes to go by and so sit back and enjoy the view it will be gone before you know it and life will go on.
SHIP BY RAIL NOT SEMI!!!!! I'm sick of those assholes cutting me off all the time on the freeway, and I'm sick of them slowing traffic, and I'M SICK OF THE ROADS BEING DESTROYED WITH ALL THOSE DAMN POTHOLES FROM THEM ASSHOLES POUNDING THE ROAD ALL DAY LONG.
jegler: I live 100 feet from the BNSF headed west out of Minneapolis. They haven't destroyed my life and I do love trains. If BNSF weren't so efficient, you probably wouldn't be able to afford the electricity to run your computer and make annoying and ignorant posts the way you do. If you don't like trains, go take your crab-ass attitude out on something else.
None of that makes much sense. Are you somehow implying that BNSF is responsible for my, or the entire county's economic standard of living? And then to suggest that if I don't like trains (which i don't), that I should complain about something other than trains?! At least I think before I write. BNSF is a hugely successful company. Good for them. But their engineers blast their damn horns about a thousand times more often than the Federal RA requires. All day and all night. So f them and f you
they blow their horns because of moron people like yourself trying to blow through the crossings and get nailed. if you were an engineer then you would understand, watching stupid people risk their lives to save a few minutes. if people had brains then the railroad wouldn't have to blow the horn at every crossing, so don't be mad at the railroad so fuckin idiot.
and without the railroad, life as we know it would come to a fast halt. those stupid semis can only dream of what the railroad can haul. I never seen semis haul 200 trailers of coal at once to a powerplant. those powerplants need the coal now not a week from now, THINK BEFORE YOU WRITE.

I'm so glad BNSF is so efficient now. It means they can make twice as much money while doubly destroying the quality of life for the hundreds of thousands of people who have the misfortune of having rails run through their town. Anybody who "loves" trains doesn't live by them.
Hey! Do you know whre I can find actuall Video Cassetes of these? I am trying to collect Burlington Northern Memorabilia and lots of it so any info please on where I can find videos actually made by the BN?
I know "Portrait of a Railroad" is available from Pentrex Video (pentrex. com). Check the "American Railroad Collection Vol. 1" in their vintage diesel video category. I don't know of anyone else selling the BN videos, but you may be able to find them on Ebay. They were part of a collection called "Railroad Classics" sold by BN in the 1980s.
Sweet, thanks. Being only 20, its great to see when the railroad was the almighty link across this country before the Interstate system took over...Hopefully the railroads will once again rein supreme :)
god damn the music score is awesome.

Perfect Harmony, Timing...Everything!!!
I'll bet the song will go with a pair of modern BN SD70MAC's leading a unit coal train in the 1990's.

How fast can railroad employees load and unload intermodal versus boxcars?
Can a railroad be too successful and ever strain the capacity of man and machine?

I live by the tracks. I would rather have two or three trains by my house in place of all the goddamn trucks and their jake brakes.
