Goldsmith's use of polyphony to build the intensity of the music for this, the movie's main theme, is nothing less than masterful! Especially the subtle way he layers the separate themes to create/enhance dissonance or reinforce the main theme. I never noticed it when I first saw the movie but now that I know more about music I can really appreciate his skill as a composer when I hear works like this.
@mgwilliams1000 Don't forget Chinatown, Freud, Alien, The Omen, Planet Of The Apes, The Final Conflict, First Blood, Poltergeist, Lonely Are The Brave etc...
I like this very much. It really evokes the power of Imperial Japan and the menace it represented in the minds of Americans, at the time, in the light of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
This movie beat the hell out of the 2001 movie. Michael Bay insulted history by what had been shown. A giant love story with some bombs thrown in. I watch tora tora tora whenever I can. and jerry,s music makes this movie all that much better.

Thanks- I've been searching for this Goldsmith score for years! A wild, abstracted combination of classic, tragic Japanese, of tension-creating percussion runs and animalistic orchestral screams, it's one of the best scores from his weird, atonal experimental "Planet of the Apes" period. Hard to hum the tunes and yet they keep you on the edge of your seat!
i remembered we bought this movie as a vhs. Back then i never fully understood the story & haven't heard about what happened to pearl. Now everytime i see this film in tv, it was very emotional & hurt me a little bit witnessing the attack on Pearl harbor..especially part when the airplanes where destroyed through strafing/bombs while the ships & submarines damaged.. by torpedoes & machine guns. This film reminded me how US entered WW2 & of Japan's lesson in the war.
I love this soundtrack and been hoping they would finally release it. Mr Goldsmith is one of my all time fav composers and this is one of his finest along with Patton and Chinatown.
The best film ever made about what happened that day. The remake they did a few years ago insulted me and I will never watch that movie again. Jerry Goldsmith;s score is very haunting, I will miss him as my favorite score composer
the 2001 movie was not that good, though "there you'll be" song was fantastic... "Tora, Tora, Tora" was the only film I stayed to see again.... Can you do that these days?
@irish89055 2001 was shit p40 could sadly never overpower zeros at the time also you pull have the jakcass stunts in that you whould get scred over this moive showed in greater historcial perpective prably only good historcial made relative to ww2 is saving private ryan minus its back story was very acurate and valkyere
Great music. Recently I came across the same music in a vid showing Japanese naval crews lined up on a war ship. It was the opening scene for the film. Any idea where I can find it?I suspect that it's been removed.
Do me a favor. Don't tell me that you think that neither side wasn't at fault to some degree in this. Still, outstanding soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith

Yea motherfucker i am doing you one big favor now and listen carefully ! China is not wrong for nothing you ignorant faggot ! All Japan wanted is to occupy the whole East Asia.
I remember something about the Hull description. But Japan was also in an expansionist phase, which ran against US policy, not to mention abuses taking place in both Korea and China's coast.
Still, Japan would've been a welcome and powerful ally against both Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia.
There actually was a notion in the Pentagon to let the Soviets and Nazis kill one another. They were nations with bad regimes, so it really didn't matter too much which of the Axis were picked to fight against the other.
It should also be said that Japan was raping the living crap out of occupied China. So, it's not like Chang Kai-Shek was making things up. There was an amazing amount of abuse, killing, and destruction happening in China, the likes of which would not be seen again until the Vietnam war.

I felt like Pearl Harbor's music was WAY too cheesy and unprofessionaly. This makes me film a Pacific movie with this in it.

Sierra026, I spoke only about the music, but you are right; "Pearl Harbor" is one of the biggest mistakes of the film industry!!

Besides Bay's Pearl Harbor movie was a cash-in on James Cameron's masterpiece Titanic and Titanic was a true masterpiece while PH is far from it.

Didn't realize it until now but he (Goldsmith) used some of the same triads in this score that he used in "Planet of the Apes".

USA of prewar days was hoping for "Joint struggle to Nazis" to Japan.
However, Chiang Kai-shek did lobbying to the USA, and the USA came to do an anti-Japanese policy.
USA thoroughly did economic sanction to Japan.
And, November, 1941. President of the USA pointed "Hull note" at Japan by the arbitrary decision.
The Hull note demanded "Dismantlement of a Japanese country".
This was a cause of the Pearl Harbor.
Hull note have not been described to the textbook of Europe and USA at all.
kichijhouji 3 years ago
To be fair, it's not like the Japanese weren't causing atrocities in China and southeast asia.
