I remember when this first aired as an episode on "Amazing Stories" sometime in the late 80's. I was a teen then, and even now I'm 40, still cracking up and remembering almost every line. Im glad I thought to check YouTube for this cartoon short. Thanks for posting!! Love it!!!
Thank you so much for putting this on Youtube, even if it was in 3 parts thanks to youtube.. I have the vhs haha, and should bring it somewhere to be made into dvd.. i watched this as a kid, and know every single line... as does my mother, and we passed it on to my brother who is now just 19... :) Thanks for the memories. I have them all saved and favorited haha. MAAAAAAAAAYBE WE NEED A NEW DOOOOOOOOOG OR MAYBE WE NEED A CAT!!!!!!!!!!!!
My kids Favorite!! My oldest is 39 today..They ALL know the words to this!! A MUST watch at Christmas..along with the Night Before Christmas with Father mouse .. great morals!!

there is something uncanny, about how good this series was (only 1 season), and I guess that was due to Tim Burton...all the funy parts are funny, and that damn dog is Soooo cute...
OMFG! HOLY HELL YES! I have wanted to see this again for SO LONG! I remember watching it the first time with my new boyfriend and his 4 lesbian friends. Laughed till I about passed out. *sigh* Two weeks later, when he DUMPED ME and I was bawling my eyes out like a big ol' 21-year-old gay sissy...the lesbians popped in this video and even through tears, it made me laugh. I am sorry to say, I no longer see Tim...damn him....he hanged himself and I never found out why. True story. *sigh*
Was at a store many yrs ago and found a stuff version of the dog from the cartoon so I bought it---we own an Italian Greyhound and looks and acts like this dog--2nd day we had her I called her PinHead and it has been her name since.
I can't believe I just found this - this made me cough up a lung laughing when it was new and I was impressed that Spielberg was involved. I loved the comic realism. I didn't know who Brad Bird was at the time, but I do now! He is one of the Pixar geniuses and is responsible for one of my favorite films - The Incredibles!!!
The kid named Billy looks like chucky not from the rugrats but from that scary movie when the guy goes in the good guy doll yeah I see them very alike.
The kid named Billy looks like chucky not from the rugrats but from that scary movie when the guy goes in the good guy doll yeah I see them very alike.
I love this show!!! I have spent so many hours trying to find out where i can get the whole season from but so far with no luck! Can anyone be of any help??? Thanks
Reminded me of the good 'ol days of when I was growing up in Millington, Tennesse in the mid-1980's. My father, had recorded this pilot when it aired. I enjoyed watching the "Family Dog" tape over and over again. -Johnny Red
Thank you very much for sharing your "Family Dog" tape.
I remember seeing this short as a kid. It's been many years since I saw it but I never forgot the image of the dog peeing on the carpet, then getting punted out the door into the yard...which is where he wanted to be all along. I wouldn't want to be around that family either.
I remembered this being shown right before The Land Before Time with it's theatrical release back in the late 80s. Especially the part with the dog food slowly coming out of the can and when the dog spits it out in the slipper. I still remembered even though it was like 20 years ago.
thank you SO MUCH! I think it was originally an episode of Amazing Stories, wasn't it? I recorded it that night, the videotape has since died from us watching it over and over again. Best sound: "t'plah" into the slipper at 4:24 *grin*
I remember seeing the promo of this as a kid. As a kid, it creeped me out, but in a way that made me curious to watch it. I didn't know the animation was by Tim Burton. That totally makes sense. Now that I watch it as an adult, I can clearly see that [metaphorical] flashing red neon sign above the Mom's head that says "I have PMDD!" Lol!
@Jenna424 I don't believe Burton was involved, but director of The Incredibles, Brad Bird wrote and directed it. It was one of his first, if not his first official role as director.
Ah cool. Just saw that. So, it says Animation Design by, which usually means he designed the look and feel of the characters, I believe...which makes total sense as you said. Totally got his style, particularly the little brother. The actual animators which are shown after his credit are a who's who of animation though. Duncan Majorbanks, Mark Kausler, Chris Buck and Tony Fucile, who's now one of Pixars lead animators. Cool stuff.
i just want to say thank you very much. i remember this from back in the day. my sister and i watched this over and over and over. i missed it so much and i can't wait to show her this. maybe she might even give me a hug.
Meant to add, I somehow was lucky enough to tape this when it first aired. I must have seen a commercial. Anyhow, it was watched so much the tape died.
This show was part of that really kick-ass TV series Amazing Stories from the mid-80s and again in the late 90s. I remember having this vid but I lost it!!! My family LOVED this one!!!
Universal ?they dont care what fans want ... fans have been bugging them for years to release PHANTASM 2 and now after years of fans bugging them .they are going to release it on sept 15, 09..
This thing just SCREAMS "Tim Burton." LoL I remember watching this movie when I was a kid. It kind of creeped me out back then, and it still does a little today, but, it's a classic, I will have to admit. ::sigh:: Ah... memories from my childhood. LoL

Brad Bird, btw, is the genius who brought us Pixar's great animated film, "The Incredibles". (He even did the voice of Edna Mode in that one!)
This is sheer genius; possibly the funniest animated short of the last fifty years.
