  • This was my first ever issue of Nintendo Power.

First of all, being a huge Ninja Turtles fan at the time, I was blown away by the cover and thrilled by the prospect of an NES game based on the show. Also lusted after "Ninja Gaiden" and "The Adventures of Bayou Billy" after perusing the previews/stage maps. Those were my three "holy grail" games of 1989. Also remember being excited by the previews of "Dragon Warrior" and "Mega Man 2".

  • That issue of NP didn't actually "retail at $3.50" even though there was a price on the cover. NP wasn't available on the newsstands at that point in time.

  • Magazine for me would have been like.. Next Generation, or ULTRA GAME PLAYERS/GAME PLAYERS (Gawd, I miss that magazine. Best. Magazine. Ever.)

Anyway, seeing this brings a wave of nostalgia. Thank you!

  • anyway.. I eventually caved and got rid of them. I remember these and I _REALLY_ wish I would have saved them. Nintendo Power was NOT my favorite magazine, even though SNES was my favorite system and I loved my NES as well. I would always get super excited when they came, flip right to the code pages and then be semi bored reading the rest unless they were talking about some new tech or sequel to game I loved.

  • I had all of the Nintendo Powers up to #50. My mother used to complain that I had them all over the place and when I said I wanted to keep them she said "and do what with them?" .. I told her I wanted to collect them and that they might be worth something. She said, along with my brother "really? They are going to be worth something? Who is going to buy them?"

My parents were always VERY supportive and I think they were just screwing with me/trying to make me not be a pack rat... anyway I

  • Ppp

  • I wish video games were as hyped up as this today like it was back then. I'd love to go to a Nintendo store!

  • hey john Im gonna post a video response to this and was wondering if you have the same magazine.

  • I love this series, John!

  • Ahh the good 'ol days. I remember waiting at the local video rental shop for over an hour for Ninja Gaiden after reading about it in Nintendo Power.

  • I get jealous eveytime I watch these videos

  • That Link and Zelda picture at 02:47 ist sooo cute *_________*

  • Ha i remember around the 1988s one NP came in the mail and that TMNT game was the #1 game of the month and I flipped out because it beat out Final Fantasy. I got grounded.

  • Love your NP reviews

    thank you gentle giant.

  • I believe the seal of quality was to show that the game was licensed for use on the NES. You won't find it on any unlicensed games.

  • kinda wish I grew up back in the 80's/90's, but very cool nintendo power issue!

  • @ReaperJ21 It was the best. I honestly don't see how kids could have had as much fun in the past decade as we did in the 80's - 90's.

  • @teGSR Kids today are actually the lucky ones, with hd graphics and games like god of war 3 and mass effect 2. They also have the luxery to save their games and use the internet to look for tips, codes, and secrets. We will all look back 10 years from now, when all games are 3D and motion controlled, and remember how good we had it today.

  • @mgloco88

Modern gaming is pretty bad compared to the 80s-90s.

Nowadays the gameplay is streamlined to the point of having no challenge (might as well watch a movie), and almost every game is going for the same "realistic" visual style (other than nintendo games it seems) rather than every game looking unique. Very few new games are any good, and the ones that are generally aren't very well received because they offer fun gameplay and challenge, which people don't want anymore apparently.

  • I have this issue...but man....aside from the address cut out...much more gloss on that cover than mine...lol

  • blades of steel rocks so hard best hockey game ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • loved nintendo power when i was a kid, although here in germany it was called "club nintendo magazine". very good content inther though!!

  • Nintendo still uses the seal of quality. It's on the back of a DS game I got that only just came out last week

  • @slashzaku15

    What game was it?

All the ones I have picked up just have the Nintendo Seal on them...no quality.

    Just curious. ^_^

  • @kreeboy411 Oh I always just assumed they were the same thing the game has the nintendo seal

  • @slashzaku15

    lol...its cool.

on the old school seal it said "Nintendo Seal of Quality". On the new one its just the "Nintendo Seal". I was just curious...because I would have loved to have seen the old seal being used. ^_^

  • Please REVIEW MORE OLD NINTENDO POWER and GAMEPRO magazines John... PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) Love these videos more then your game system videos. Keep up the great work my friend

  • That's freaking awesome! The only Nintendo Power I've ever owned was the one with the guide for Super Mario 3.

  • OMG I HAVE THIS ISSUE! Mine's kind of beat-up though. The old Nintendo Power magazines are awesome!

  • tmnt... one of the best nes games imo....cool review

  • How about... "Hi guys, this is John, Gamester81, here on NEStalgiaholic. This week ..." etc. or whatever. It sounds more legitimate and trustworthy if your not 4 different people. Great video! This is by far your best of your channels!

  • im still looking for my duck tales high score with my name in it . no ones found it yet !

  • I loved it how you actually called that number (:

  • I think you meant Gradius instead of Contra. Both games are kinda related.

  • Are you gunna review every Nintendo Power Mag? Haha

  • Life force AKA Salamander isn't associated with the Contra series. I bought the Jap version the day when it came out almost 20 years ago. :)

  • can't wait for the one with spida1a in it :p haha

  • a year before i was born basically ... a good year

  • @TheNews1990 The videogaming industry had started to thrive a decade before you were born. In the year 1983 to be exact. The year when I started playing.

  • holly robinson was the girl that played in 21 jump street with johnny depp
