  • damn how much horse power did you get?

  • well wickedlycold if it had hei did ford jump to the future and steal a distributor from chevrolet??is this even possible??if you don't know why even bother??

  • isn't it HI PO ans in high performance?

  • @cdoublejj Ford themselves actually condense it down to HiPo quite commonly. You are right, it is short-hand for High Power/High Performance, but yeah, for some reason that's what it gets called.

  • What a waste of time with no Hp or Torque numbers stated !!!

  • whats the diffrance between

    a regular stock 289 and a hipo

    289

  • hipo has a bunch of different stuff, like valve spring seats, HEI distributor (stock 289 uses points), wider harmonic balancer, dual point ignition, stuff like that.

there was a 50HP difference between the hipo 289 and stock 289.

  • They didnt have a HEI dist!

    Thx god for that!

    They had dual points.

  • WickedlyCold is correct on some things. The 289 also had a Brinnel tested stronger crankshaft, solidlifter cam set up with different specs than 289(Stock). Different 4100 carb, and different ex manifolds. The diff between stock and 289HiPo was actually 71HP, Stock having 200HP, the 289-4v having 225HP and the 289-4vHiPo 271HP. Shelby swapped carbs, intakes and headers to give 307HP to his cars.

  • Back-up motor for my 1965 Triumph TR4 w/Turbo-Action full manual C4, 3,500 RPM converter (have a 5,500 RPM ATI converter too) & 9" rear w/Detroit Locker and Modified Sunbeam Tiger Thunderbird headers.

Motor dynamically balanced crankshaft counterweights. So any pre-1982 28" oz. flywheel manual or automatic should be fine.

The vintage race guys said I should sell this motor to a collector as it is original HIPO 289 and not overbored

  • I would. You'd get big bucks for it (but, for the love of God, paint it BLUE first). Ha Ha Ha. Nice job.

  • sweet, motor sounds good. what are you going to put it in? what tranny and rearend?

  • Numbers Please.......

  • Ya, I remember a 289 that we painted yellow. We put it in a 1956 F100 Custom Cab. Then my brother dropped a wrench down the distributor hole. By the time we got done with the whole job it was half yellow and half grease. Ah, to be young (and stupid) again!

  • Dropped distributor shafts before too, no fun!!!

    Best, jjtr4

  • And that wasn't the worst of it! My brother wired the cap backwards (on accident) and thought we had a bad cam. I remember my dad pulling the pickup down the road with a tractor and wondering what all of the back firing was! Hey, it was 1972 and we didn't have a clue. It's funny now. My big brother the "mechanic".

  • So, what were the horsepower and torque numbers?

  • Yellow easy to work on under lights at track!

  • I knew there had to be a reason! Or you work for Caterpillar!!! haha

  • Cool engine run, but why yellow? Can't wait to break in my 289 HiPo just rebuilt to take it to upper RPM ranges. Has a large Holley 4bbl, high rise intake and spacer, porting, polishing, high comp pistons, ignition, etc built for performance, you know the name of the game. Have about 50 miles on it, don't know how I keep from pushing in the clutch and opening the secondaries, then releasing clutch. The agony! Good luck with whatever you put the mill into.
