They are not a misconception because he had talent but he never got fame, so the devil gave him what he wanted but Robert never said anything about being famous so his songs never sold until after his death and he speaks of many of the folklore about the demon, the crossroads, and actually many of it is true it is also in his songs.
I get chills when I hear him sing. I don't get how he gets that sound with his voice. They say that the records may have been speeded up but it doesn't sound like that to me
Actually grimsleepy, Johnson himself was the one who started saying he sold his soul. Nobody started that story other then the man himself. If you listen to a great majority of his music has references to it.
After listening to his music for a long time, then coming back to it, it is obvious that he did something that worried him, drove him. Did he in fact pledge his soul to a entity of darkness? I conjecture he did something. I don't know what but there is a touch of desperate madness in his singing and playing that can't be duplicated. To say that he sold his soul puts all of us on notice. There is a darkness and there is a light and what do we give ourselves to each and everyday....Hummm HummmHumm
Johnson was not only an awesome musician.....he was also a wonderful vocalist. He had this extremely haunting voice that gave his songs that added level of eeriness.
Woo-Whoo!! awsome awsome awsome! they metion this on the show supernatural season 2 episode "crossroad blues" it has the whole legend in that episode...Ever seen that show? AWSOME!!!!!! awsome song too!

The master of the blues, without whom I shudder to think where we, the world, would be. I mean that literally.

@grimsleepy : preaching? art doesn't preach. it only shows you things the way they are and leaves it up to you to judge them
