As someone who has been in the gay movement for 30 years, I think we do a pretty good job showing those differences in our film and how they were able to overcome them and come together over the years. I am pleased to say there is sometimes good things to come from "differences" and from that we grow. I think if you were to watch the whole film you would see how we did that. John

Strange the Gays and Lesbians get on quite well here the main problem is "straight acting" gays not getting on with "feminine" gays it's so ridiculous, but there isn't really trouble between them it's just a noticeable group divide when really the LGBT community should be embracing all.
The main reason the self proclaimed straight acting gays frown upon the more feminine ones is because they feel pressured by homophobes. Actually, from what I've read, citizens of Sodom and Gomorrah were burned for losing faith in God, not the homosexual acts. It's partially the fault of the Hebrew-to-English translations.

They hang out, drink beer or coffee, have intellectual conversations and so on. Sexual orientation and a person's sex drive are two different things though. I love women. So at some point we need to show the whole diversity of the past cultures, and not just emphasize the Judeo Christian aspects. However, I still face discrimination from the federal government. To answer your question: we are treated like second-class citizens. We can't get married, join the military and we have limited adoption rights. In many states you can lose your job for being gay. This is hardly equal.

In countries where gay people have equal rights, suicide rates of gay people have significantly decreased. There is obviously a correlation between equal treatment and happiness. Being gay is not necessarily genetic: most evidence shows that people are born gay because of hormones they are exposed to as a fetus. The twin studies really show that twins are both gay at a higher rate than would be possible if being gay was a choice.

Etheridge states in the dialogue that "despite their differences, they came together that one day" and it still is consistent with today. However, as a gay man, my question is why there is this canyon of differences between hay men and lesbians. I have not felt it, but I have seen it and anyone I have ever asked, even though they feel it, do not know from whence it came? If anyone can tell me, I would be grateful. Ta!

The white party is an abomination. There was once a time when ppl were ashamed and hid their nasty habits and lifestyles from the rest of the wrold.
Now they have changed the culture to their image and look whats happened to us. We are a Country with no morals. It will be our undoing.

Jake, megasarge, and Rena. I have removed a few... I think the debate on relilgion, the bible etc. is interesting, but there are many cultures that are not Christian, or Jewish, or... So at some point we need to show the whole diversity of the past cultures, and not just emphasize the Judeo Christian aspects. Thank-you to all of those who decided they wouldn't take the discrimination anymore, because of you, I am very proude to be a gay man. My only regret is I wish I could have been there!

Thank you to these men and women for doing this. They gave all Gays and lesbians the curage to do the same as them to march.So people have died and others beaten but we still will mrch in every city in the world and we will still fight for our rights.

There are differences between gay men and lesbian women. There are different societal pressures and the experience, while similar, isn't identical.
It's about understanding and honoring those differences. It's about fighting for equality for everyone, not just the people who look or act like you.

Back then all sorts of queers and gender non-conforming people stuck together and fought for their rights. Nowadays, the community is divided after the "normal acting" gays and lesbians are starting to become accepted by mainstream society. The sissies and gender non-conforming and trans, those who were picked on for being different during Stonewall and fought back, are now being marginalized (ex. HRC with ENDA). Let's not forget about the spirit of the Stonewall Revolution.

HareKrishnaAlex: yes, I think gays and lesbians are family, but if you were to watch the film, the part before the march, a number of lesbians and gay men talk about the early 70's as being difficult for them to agree on many issues. "Despite their differences" what? I'm a lesbian and my bestfriend for 17 years is a gay man. I get alond better with gay men then lesbians. I don't trust stright ppl at all i have my reassons why.

erosdq: thanks for your comment. As someone who has been in the gay movement for 30 years, I think we do a pretty good job showing those differences in our film and how they were able to overcome them and come together over the years. I am pleased to say there is sometimes good things to come from "differences" and from that we grow. I think if you were to watch the whole film you would see how we did that. John

Strange the Gays and Lesbians get on quite well here the main problem is "straight acting" gays not getting on with "feminine" gays it's so ridiculous, but there isn't really trouble between them it's just a noticeable group divide when really the LGBT community should be embracing all.

The main reason the self proclaimed straight acting gays frown upon the more feminine ones is because they feel pressured by homophobes. These problems will eventually fade when people are finally allowed by their peers to be comfortable with their selves. Things are definitely changing quickly. There was a time when I had trouble making eye contact because of the dirty looks that I got but now people seem to be more accepting, never the less, we have a long way to go.

You'd be amazed at the amount of discrimination within the "gay community." Racism, ageism, gender, body-fascism all rank high on the list of the unacceptable. When it comes to discrimination gays give as good as they get - especially to their own.

"Gay acceptance" mean much more than having straights and the government accept the GLBT community...it means accepting each other as well. Discrimination is discrimination, no matter how you dress it up.

I have seen San Diego go so far in each direction in recent years that I basically felt disillusioned and stopped going.
I just attended to meet new people, in fact I meet my last boyfriend in San Diego in 96 and got more politically aware at the same time so the balance between party and politics can work instead of all political ranting or all parties.
