Wouldn't it be easier to just say "We call on every god and goddess in the universe by every name they have ever been called." It would have had the same effect and saved 13 valuable minutes of my life.

well, it's the fact that it's a ritual that counts. same thing with prayer in other faiths. whether it be as elaborate as this, or as simple as praying before bed in the christian faith.
