This is because the Uchiha clan were going to perform a coup d'etat on the village, so they could gain control of it (Predominant clan). If they did this, the entire village would be destroyed as the other nations would see them in a weak position and strike. Itachi said he wanted to do it so he could let his little brother Sasuke live
