FLIP LAID THA BLUE PRINT ON HOW ON TO GET MONEY !!!!!!!! LOOK AT THA CRIB AFTER HE WALK AWAY FROM A SHOW!!!!! WHEN U HAVE A HIGH POURCH DONT SAY IT WOW!!!!!
When they talk about the great comedians of all time they never mention Flip Wilson!! Truly one of the funniest people that has ever lived. He was Richard Pryor,Milton Berle,Bill Cosby,Red Foxx,Jack Benny and Jonathon Winters rolled into one. Yet uniquely his own. Thursday nights were never same. In our house it was spaghetti or something Italian and Flip. Sometime I laugh out loud when I remember some of the things he said. A true Jersey boy who will live in my heart and mind forever. Peace.
Flip had a deepth and breadth of talent that was amazing, very funny and insightful to watch!
What an inspiration he was. He brought up topics that many ran away from in his day and did it with humour and class. Plus got us to laugh at ourselves and each other.
I love Flip Wilson and miss him sorely. He was my idol all my life. Wonderful man, wonderful comedian/entertainer. And a Sagittarian like me. Heyyy. :D
I enjoyed his show so much when I was a kid back in the 70s. No one's mentioned it, but didn't Flip appear in an episode of "The Six Million Dollar Man"?
@ACLTony Yes, he did; he didn't play himself, but he definitely played a comedian - and he was hillarious! I believe it was a two part episode where foreign agents secretly implanted a mind control device inside of Flip's character's brain, so that they could use him as a spy. I loved that show (The Six Million Dollar Man) but this episode to me was a refreshing change from the bad guys kidnappipng Oscar or Rudy and having Steve rescure them all of the time, you know?
Actually, Wilson did a lot of work after leaving his variety series - doing TV guest shots, film, and several network specials. When he won custody of his children in 1979, he started spending more time with his family until his second divorce, in 1984. At that point, he resumed a heavy work schedule and starred in the series, Charlie & Co.
He was a sincere promoter for equality, and always gave black entertainers preferential treatment & status. He died, too young, at 64.
WOW! The show was great but I have never seen an interview with the man. Thanks for posting this. Flip was always funny but I've never seen him like this and it was a pleasure.
Who remembers the other show Flip did called Charlie and Co...with Gladys knight as his wife...Della Reese was his mother-in-law and Kristoff St. John (from Young and the Restless) and Jaleel White (Urkel from Family Matters) were his sons. *I forget who played the daughter but I remember she had a nice hairdo)
Flip (and Carol) saved my family bringing their Love and Laughter into our 'home'. God Bless You Flip ! What an Amazing Human Being !
My Father just passed away from Cancer after being Diagnosed only 3 months before so I now Understand and Feel the Grief that I hope all Families Suffering from this man made DiSeAsE that is caused by all of the 'preservatives' added into processed 'food' will Feel & be Healed by God's Love when Your Laughter comes into our homes and Heals our Hearts.
@JBME Amen on the causes of cancer... let's not forget they also SUPPRESS the CURE in lieu of BIG PHARMA profits! Visit icurecancer "dot com" for more answers! RIP Flip!
bravo, good for you Flip and when he ended up dying young, the years he spend with his children were all the more important, rest in peace with love, xoxoxo
Flip was fun and clever. In an apartment scene, by himself, he finishes a phone call with a buddy of his, lowering his voice, and says, After supper! As young black kids, we would hear adults say good by to each other with, After supper, motherf---er! So, although he was preparing for a dinner date at his apartment, the apartment the available prop for his good bye to the his caller. He was one of my role models for being a dad. Thanks Flip. R.I.P
Dang, Tom Joyner was acting like a goofy nerd at the beginning of the interview. And he kind of looks like Al Reynolds, Star Jones ex husband. But yes, Flip Wilson was definetely a household name back in the 70's. I use to like to see him do Geraldine.
Dave Chappelle left his show too, and 50 million dollars as well...Money isn't the driving force for Dave and it clearly wasn't for Flip...Flip was/is a comedy legend.
Flip was a true comedic genius, had the number one rated show on TV for 3 years ('71, '72' and '73), and walked away to be there for his family. His successful show gave him enough money to do this. However, like Redd Foxx, there were other reasons behind his leaving, and they had to do with his treatment by the predominately white industry...not big things (to me), but lots of little things, which I can understrand. It's not always about the money. Flip's shows were brilliant, I miss him.
If they are 'trivial and self important it is the questions asked of them. Flip Wilson was ever 'trivial OR self-important'
"Higher porch" was obviously, what is refered to in comedy as an "absurdity" The absurdity of that statement is what makes it funny. It would seem DECIDERER, the insipidity and crap is in your mouth. Flip Wilson was a great comedian
Honestly, has anyone ever heard a decent interview with an actor or commedian? Trivial, self-absorbed, "higher porch" crap, insipid ambition... the part about women's liberation was nice, but the rest - - lordy.
Flip Wilson, If he did dose skits TODAY...THE Blacks would be in UP in arms. People TODAY do NOT have a sense of Humor. White This,Black This, I'm Fuckin' Brown, I'm Yellow. You Idiot's,Can't you SEE? We are ONLY PEOPLE?
At 4:28, "Geraldine is my most popular, Rev. Leroy is my favorite, Flip is my idol. In fact I called my idol up the other day and asked him who his favorite was, and he said ME." Funny as that is that actually makes sense, because "Flip" was his performing name in the business. But his real name was Cleroe.
I can see right through him. He couldn't handle the stress and quit. There's no shame in that especially if the family can benefit. Ain't that right "killer"? :)
A True Pioneer!!! That man opened a whole lot of doors! A comic genious and very professional to boot. I still have my Flip Wilson/Geraldine Doll. "I Smell A Rat and the Wind is Coming from your Direction!!!". RIP Mr Flip Wilson.
Wow, this interview was wonderful! He expressed his life and views on life down to the core. It's true business/career is important but it's only a small piece of your life but family if you have one is the start. Koodoos!!!!
Not many people know this, but there was a talk show in the 90's Flip Wilson was a guest. The talk show hostess was harping on Wilson to do Geraldine. Instead he recited a passage from Gibran. I knew from that day that Wilson was a changed man. I appreciated him even more after what I saw in the moment. Rest in the Lord's Peace, Flip.
@gearad, Recently I have just know something about Flip because of Jackson 5 ! And I heard that Flip had already pass away many yrs ago! Curiously, how did he died? Do u know that? I miss him !!
I remember him from when I was a kid. He always made me laugh. Didnt realize he had passed. RIP Flip. Man you were the greatest. God must be peeing himself right now.
Thank God for Flip Wilson, this man is from my small home town of Jersey City,New Jersey. His Dad and my Grandfather were good friends. His brother and my mom use to work together at Colgates downtown Jersey City. And yes Tom Joyner gave a lame ass interview, and asked some dumb ass questions to this comedy legend.
R.i.p Mr. Wilson your comedy and joy you have gave to the world will live forever. This man also attended my old public school in Jersey City,NJ...p.s # 29...on Claremount ave.
I'm glad I had the chance to share this earth with him at a really good time in American life. I had the chance to see so much good from flip. My god watch over his family.
I hope I would have the guts Flip did to put aside so much money to be a better father. Not that I'll really ever have to make that choice, lol! My hat's off to you flip, may I be as dedicated a father to my kids.
look at how slim Tom Joyner was back then! it's good memories seeing the both of them. If it wasn't for Flip Wilson, there would be no Big Momma's House or Nutty Professor :D
His show was one of my earliest memories as a child. I do believe that he and media pioneers like him did so much to destroy the awful bigotry that was crippling this nation. as bad as it can get today, I could never truly describe to a young person just how bad it was back then. Blessings to him and his family.
Brother Flip was a socially conscious man, and had a very positive impact on Black America at a time when we needed it. R.I.P Flip. Thank You. Salaam.
I didn't know he died in 1998 either! I used to really like the Flip Wilson Show. I respect that he quit television to raise his pre-teen children. Personally, I think everyone in television should quit and lead normal lives. TV is poison and creates hypnotized zombies who forget how to think for themselves. (I haven't owned a TV in many years.)
P.S. to understand how popular Flip was, remember that he was on prime time network television, watched by all ages, classes and races of Americans. In today's terms, he would be comparable in popularity to a Jerry Seinfeld ("Seinfeld") or Ray Romano {"Everybody Loves Raymond"). It is unfortunate that 30+ years later, there is no African-American comic who has the same level of stature or exposure. Flip was a pioneer and set the benchmark for success.
I remember looking forward to watching Flip Wilson every week, when I was a kid. Folks, if you are not old enough to remember this, Flip was HUGE. At one point, half the kids on my block had the talking Flip Wilson/Geraldine doll, which said hilarious lines from the show. Flip was a savvy businessman and a brilliant man. Sadly, Flip passed away in 1998 at the age of 64, from complications due to liver cancer. Flip, thanks for the laughs. This caucasian viewer salutes you.
hey man my cousin had one and it used to say when you pulled the string: "I smell a rat and the wind is coming from your direction"...lol-hey man it dont matter if u were white or black funny is funny and Flip was funny-
I really wish that it didn't matter what color or race we are-I really hate racism it makes me sick and it makes me feel that we are a real dumb society to still be divided the way that we are-god bless you from a black man that dont care about what race u r!!
I mentioned my race in reference to Flip's joke about his "caucasian neighbors" in this clip. Did you catch that? And I mention black comedians within the context of this clip being posted by Ebony Magazine, which spotlights African-American personalities and issues. The word Ebony means black. I agree that race doesn't matter. But the issue of race is completely appropriate within the context of Ebony and Flip Wilson, who brought it up in the first place. Please try to relax, it's gonna be OK..
oh no i wasn't trippin its just that i am so tired of everything having to with race. Go to some other you tube posts and you will see what i mean-i was not coming down on you-i say god bless you at the end -even though it is appropriate it (racism) is just getting "old" to me and so unnecessary
Glad to know that he left on top!

It was interesting to me to see someone who was not famous become famous!
I can still picture when he showed up at a friends house with his first album and real quick he had his show on television!
BTW! the friends house where I met him was a song writer and arranger for B B King!

P.S. to understand how popular Flip was, remember that he was on prime time network television, watched by all ages, classes and races of Americans.

Sometimes comedians are the wisest of us all. What Flip says about family is inspirational to everyone.
... But now that his kids are grown, I'd love to see more of him om film and TV.
