That was one of the first questions I asked when I finally arrived at the park, but after I saw how great this place is with all of it's history, I'd say it's better left unpaved and those who make the journey are rewarded and with less traffic maybe the sites will see less damage...
DO NOT PAVE THE ROAD!!!!!! San Juan County needs to maintain it with graders. Graveling & dust abatement can be done that will help prevent the wash boarding of the road. Lower the speed limit on the road. Spend the money paving the roads to the Commissioners property not Chaco!!!!
I did this road and it is hellacious, but I have to come down on the side of those who do not want to pave. There are not enough sites for people to stay at if the Park is opened to traffic. Plus, I think the locals don't want it paved. The charm and excitement of the Park is getting there.
Id like to know how many of you "do-gooders" have actually asked the people that were kicked out of the park when it was created if they would like a decent road to haul their water and make their trips to dialysis. Id like to see how many Subaru Outbacks make it down that road this time of year.
Seems like it should be up to the Park to determine how many people enter the park, not to punish the people that live there so white people can have a "Neat" ride to the park.
I have never been to Chaco Canyon, but I am not in favor of paving the road....we should preserve and protect this wonderful site from the hordes of people... one way is to limit the access by keeping the road the way it is
Chaco is one of the few places where you can roam free in an enviroment similar to that of the ancients. Road improvements will end that and turn it in to a Disneyland type fiasco like at Mesa Verde. Leave the road as it is!
